    Earth Now! Landsat Image Viewer

    No full text
This viewer lets users see near real-time images from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). When a Landsat satellite passes within range of the ground station at the USGS Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS), image data are downlinked and displayed in near-real time. When no satellites are within range, the most recent pass is displayed. By viewing the moving display, students can monitor changes in the Earth's surface. An index map and information display shows the path of the satellite, indicates which satellite is currently providing the imagery, and gives the acquisition date and time. A help page and frequently-asked-questions feature are provided to explain how to use the site

    Exploring Paleoclimatology in the Classroom

    No full text
This guide provides instructions for educators on how to access and use coral radioisotope data for classroom activities. The data consist of Sr/Ca ratios and Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) for coral samples near Rarotonga Island in the South Specific gyre, covering a 271 year period, from the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology. Topics include methods for reconstructing temperature records, the South Pacific Gyre and EL Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the relevance of decadal variations in sea surface temperature. Students will learn to use the data to generate graphs comparing Sr/Ca ratios to historical temperature data and to calculate the statistical relationship between isotope ratios and temperature. They may also use linear regression analysis to compare and evaluate methods for reconstructing climate history and interpret chemical data from coral samples. A link to the dataset website and to links for additional references are also provided

Women in Engineering; Hands-On Classes Jumpstart a Career; Lasers and Photonics

    No full text
The ATETV project delivers web-based videos to connect students to careers in advanced technology. This episode of ATETV examines women in technical fields including engineering and lasers / photonics and how hands-on classwork can lead to more success after graduation. The video can be viewed whole or in three segments: "Women in Technology: Engineering," "Hands-On Classes Jumpstart a Career," and "Women Study Lasers and Photonics." The running time for the full episode is 8:53

Marine Fisheries - Management and Proposed Solutions

    No full text
This instructional guide is designed to provide instructors with lecture support on the topic of marine fisheries with an emphasis on those species that are commercially harvested in the United States. Proposed and implemented management activities that are designed to manage fisheries stocks in a sustainable manner are discussed with an emphasis on those that take an ecosystems approach to fisheries management.A general lecture outline and a more detailed PowerPoint presentation with instructor notes are provided. Print, video and web-based resources that cover the topic are summarized and cited. Instructors who wish to obtain greater detail on any of the topics discussed in this module are encouraged to seek out these additional resources or those cited in the Comprehensive Resources for NCSR Marine Fisheries Series

NCSR: Where Does Your Seafood Come From?

    No full text
This activity is designed to familiarize students with seafood products that are being sold in their community and to have them investigate the conservation characteristics (stock status, harvest method, wild-caught or aquaculture product, etc.) of those species.Approximately 3-4 hours of class or laboratory time will be needed to complete this activity

National Marine Sanctuaries Education: For Teachers

    No full text
This site offers regional and topical training workshops for teachers, as well as hands-on programs for classrooms, with on-line and hard copy resources. Teachers can arrange Sanctuary access to conduct intertidal monitoring, data collection and analysis. Grant opportunities for developing outdoor education are discussed. Ocean, watershed and technology topics are covered using curricula, lesson plans, field activities and methods, data and virtual sanctuary fieldtrips

    Atkins or "Fadkins"?

    No full text
This case study looks at the relationship between claims made about diet trends and the actual ways body systems work together to contribute to homeostatsis. The lesson was designed for upper level high school and lower level undergraduate students, and would be particularly useful for non health majors studying human anatomy and physiology. The case study and teaching notes may be downloaded in PDF format. The site also includes a section for instructor feedback where general comments may be read and contributed

Introduction to Composite Materials for Engineers and Technicians

    No full text
This learning module will help instructors explain composite materials specifically for engineers and technicians. Students will learn the structure and advantages of composite materials as well as the basic processing procedures involved in their creation. It will serve as a one-lecture introduction and would be appropriate for students at the high school or college level. This document will serve as a framework for instructors and may be downloaded in PDF format

Freezing and Thawing Human Embryonic Stem Cells

    No full text
Lia Kent, of Stemgent's Research and Development team, has created this video to demonstrate "the proper technique for rapidly thawing hES cells from liquid nitrogen stocks, plating them on mouse embryonic feeder cells, and slowly freezing them for long-term storage." The video is also accompanied by protocols for thawing and freezing hES cells, discussion, materials, references, a forum for comments, and a PDF of the full text

The E6 Net Zero Project: Portland Community College Sylvania Campus

    No full text
This report presents the firm Gerding Edlen's E6/Net Zero assessment, which was a sustainability assessment conducted for Portland Community College's Sylvania campus. Seven different options are given for moving the campus toward more sustainable practices. The report reviews the existing environmental conditions on campus, strategies for energy creation and resource conservation, environmental stewardship options and potential for job creation. This report is very thorough and may be useful for other colleges investigating how they may improve green practices on their own campus. This document may be downloaded in PDF file format
