Quality Control Microbiologist
This video, presented by WGBH, takes a look at a day in the life of a quality control microbiologist at a pharmaceutical company and provides a detailed account of what is possible with a microbiology degree, including the hands-on laboratory aspects field. This video would be helpful for anyone interested in a degree in microbiology, as well as anyone that is currently earning a degree in this field but is still unsure about what to do with it. Educators will also find a background essay, discussion questions, and standards alignment for the material. Running time for the video is 2:38
Biotechnology Student Profile
This video, from WGBH, takes a look at a high school student taking after school biotechnology courses at Middlesex Community College. This video explores microbiology programs, the skills students need to learn, and activities to help them hone those skills, such as through shadowing other college students. This site helps illustrate how students can foster their interest in science and biotechnology and pursue a career in this field. Educators will also find a background essay, discussion questions, and standards alignment for the material. Running time for the video is 2:39
Marine Fisheries Introduction and Status
This instructional guide is designed to provide instructors with lecture support on the topic of marine fisheries with an emphasis on those species that are commercially harvested in the United States. Marine fisheries are first defined and characterized and then the various marine habitats that are exploited are described. The historical condition of fisheries is discussed, as well as assessments of the current status of the resource. A general lecture outline and a more detailed PowerPoint presentation with instructor notes are provided. Print, video and web-based resources that cover the topic are summarized and cited. Instructors who wish to obtain greater detail on any of the topics discussed in this module are encouraged to seek out these additional resources or those cited in the Comprehensive Resources for NCSR Marine Fisheries Series

Distance Learning, College Accreditation & Online Degrees: The Facts
This site gives an excellent overview of what distance learning is, has everything you need to know to get started. Includes information about the importance of accreditation, kinds of accreditation (institutional and programmatic) to look for, valid accreditation boards, and how to recognize bogus programs and diploma mills. It also includes, within the text, links to important related websites (e.g. Council for Higher Education)
From Teaching to Learning: Part III. Lectures and Approaches to Active Learning
This site features an article from the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education applying active learning processes in veterinary classes focusing on asking questions and brainstorming in class. This page is for faculty, but is general and not specifically geared to any particular discipline. The quality of content is excellent and uses examples of material used in a science lecture, Journal references are included
Gas Chromatography
This is a website from the US Environmental Protection Agency that explains Gas Chromatography for those interested in environmental analysis. The level of the material assumes some user background in the field
Casting Castings: A Classroom Hands-on Activity
This learning activity will provide a useful technique for students to learn casting concepts. The class will be allowed a hands-on experience with casting. Students will make their own fishing sinkers. The lesson plan document includes step by step instructions for the lesson along with photographs. This activity would be appropriate for high school and college level students. The lesson should take about one hour of class time. This document will serve as a framework for instructors and may be downloaded in PDF format
The Physics Classroom: The Work-Energy Theorem
Created by author Tom Henderson, this page is a tutorial that features bar charts to explore the relationship between work and energy. Work-Energy bar charts are a conceptual tool which depict the amount of each form of energy within a system as it undergoes a particular motion or process. This resource offers comprehensive guidance in how to read and understand energy bar charts, animations that illustrate the processes described, and example problems with solutions. It is part of a collection of online tutorials written for high school physics students
Roller Coasters and Amusement Park Physics
Created by Tom Henderson of Physics Classroom.com, this resource provides explanations and animations that explore the physics of roller coasters. It is designed as a tutorial for either teacher or learner to be used in conjunction with a unit on amusement park physics. The author uses free-body diagrams and detailed discussion to show how the force of gravity and the normal force act upon the roller coaster as it moves on a straight, curved, or looped track. A short self-test gauges user comprehension as well. This material is part of a larger collection
