Creative Expressions in Advanced Technological Education
No full textThe ATETV project delivers web-based videos to connect students to careers in advanced technology. This episode of ATETV looks at Architectural Technology, Rapid Prototyping, and Geospatial Technology programs. The video shows the amount of real world experience the students obtain, as well as giving a general background on the programs themselves. It can be viewed whole, or in three segments: "Drawing on a New Career," "Rapid Prototypers: Inventors of New Technology," and "Pointing the Way with Computer Mapping Technology." Preparing Teachers to Teach Earth Science
No full textThis site examines the role of geoscience departments and faculty in preparing preservice teachers and supporting practicing teachers who teach K-12 Earth science. Information is drawn from the participants and outcomes of a 2003 workshop, 'Developing the Earth Science Teacher Workforce: The Role of Geoscience Departments and Introductory Courses'. Topics include issues involved in preparing teachers to teach Earth science; ways in which colleges and universities prepare future K-12 teachers of Earth science; and ways in which geoscience faculty and departments support practicing teachers (most of whom have a major in a non-geosciences area) as they expand their knowledge of Earth Science and keep up in a changing field. Envisioning Climate Change Using a Global Climate Model
No full textHow do climatologists and others model climate change? It's a good question, and one that students of the physical sciences and members of the general public will find interesting. This particular educational activity is offered as part of the Earth Exploration Toolbook, which is an initiative of the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College. This interactive "chapter" from the Toolbook was added in January 2010, and it allows users to "visualize how temperature and snow coverage might change over the next 100 years." After installing some basic software that is included here, visitors will run a "control" climate simulation to establish a baseline for comparison. Visitors then run a second "experimental" simulation to compare and contrast the potential changes in temperature, snow, and ice coverage that might occur due to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases. Visitors can then choose a region of their own interest to examine, and through these activities, will "gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the process and power of climate modeling." Exploring Oceanography Using Data from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
No full textThis guide introduces educators to the classroom use of oceanographic data from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). MBARI provides near real-time, quality controlled data on surface and subsurface temperature and salinity; CO2 and O2 concentrations; and relative fluorescence, used by scientists to better understand the Monterey Bay ecosystem and draw parallels to the ocean as a whole. Teaching topics include: topography and plate tectonics of the ocean floor; meteorology; ecology of the Monterey Bay region; geochemical cycles; phytoplankton primary productivity; and marine biodiversity. Students will learn to: understand the relationship between wind and ocean upwelling; interpret maps of oceanographic data; understand the methods used to obtain bathymetric data; and understand the instrumentation used to obtain physical and biological oceanographic data. There are instructions and links for accessing and manipulating the data, links to scientific and educational resource that use this dataset, and links to online resources with related information
