    Composite Materials Layup Lab

    This learning activity will provide students with an introduction to the layup method of composite production. Students will use epoxy resin and fiberglass woven cloth to create their own lay-up, and in the process learn about matrices, resins, hardeners, and release agents. This activity is intended for advanced high school and undergraduate college students and can be completed in one and a half to two and a half hours in the lab.     Launched in 2010 by science writers Ivan Oransky and Adam Marcus, Retraction Watch seeks to make public the "self-correcting" nature of science. The site has been praised for bringing to light many hundreds of retracted papers in a wide variety of fields, some due to fraud, others just to mistakes in experiments or the publishing process. A great place to start is with the latest retractions, listed in chronological order on the homepage. For instance, recent retracted papers at the time this writing concerned plagiarism in the field of aeronautic dentistry, a paper on wheat straw that seems to have been published (and retracted) more than once, and even a letter to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, written by an impersonator. The site also contains a useful search function for readers who are looking for specific topics, authors, or articles

    A joint US and France project, the TOPEX-Poseidon satellites continuously measure sea surface height. The oceans store and transport solar heat, helping to keep Earth's climate in balance. In this episode of ATETV, laser and photonics technology, geospatial technology and alternative energy technologies are discussed. A strong background in math and science gives students an advantage in their community college programs. The skills learned in such programs translate directly to the field. Community colleges offer courses to help students improve their math and science skills if need be.     Scientists have studied the physical properties of clouds and have developed instruments on board satellites to characterize the types of clouds they see below. Some satellites have instruments that allow them to measure rainfall as well. For this lesson, students will hypothesize what types of clouds they believe will create the most precipitation (rainfall) over Nashville, TN. Students use the Live Access Server (LAS) to obtain Cloud Coverage data that represents what percentage of the sky is covered by a certain type of cloud. They then compare the cloud coverage data to precipitation data provided by the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.
