U.S. South Pole Station
Sometimes if you feel your working conditions are difficult, consider what it must be like to work at the National Science Foundation's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Those hardy scientists are working year-round on the coldest, highest, driest, and windiest continent. In 2011, the Station celebrated its 100th anniversary, and this NSF website offers curious parties a look into the past and the future. The site offers six different sections, including "Science Goals," "Video Tour," and "New NSF Station." The homepage gives visitors the opportunity to view the South Pole webcam and a complete vista that shows the station in its entirety. Moving on, the "Science Goals" area features an interactive timeline of important dates in South Pole exploration and important scientific discoveries that have been part of its history. The "Video Tour" presents "Reflections From The Ice." This video offers commentary from former station construction chief Jerry Marty on living and working at the South Pole. The site is rounded out by photo galleries and information on the new NSF station
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of Threatened Species conveys information about plant and animal species on its website, and is regarded as "the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species." Visitors will find that the website is divided up into the seven categories they use to classify the threat to plants and animals. The categories are "Extinct," "Extinct in the Wild," "Critically Endangered," "Endangered," "Vulnerable," "Near Threatened," and "Least Concern." Visitors can click on each category to see an alphabetical list of the species, or to search by other criteria. The "Photos" section has pictures of threatened species by type from 2000-2011. Each photo has a brief paragraph about the state of the species next to it. Visitors shouldn't miss the photos of the Red-Crested Tree Rat, Blessed Poison Frog, or the Violet-Spotted Reef Lobster
MIT OpenCourseWare: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming
For those individuals who have yet to experience one of MIT's OpenCourseWare offerings, this is a great place to start. This site provides access to the spring 2011 version of Professor John Guttag's popular "Introduction to Computer Science and Programming." This course is aimed at students with "little or no programming experience," and its goal is to help students feel "justifiably confident of their ability to write small programs that allow them to accomplish useful goals." The materials here include a complete set of lecture videos, resources for each video (such as handouts and slides), recitation videos by the course teaching assistants, and homework problems with sample student solutions. The site also includes self-assessment tools and a Further Study area, which includes collection of links to supplement the course materials
Nanoscience Career Advice
This video adapted from North Dakota State College of Science explores the range of science and technology careers that work with matter at an incredibly small scale: the nanoscale. A college instructor explains that almost anyone interested in mathematics or science, whether itâs physics, biology, or chemistry, can find a job thatâs right for them in the field of nanoscience. Workers employed in various industries that are exploring applications of nanoscience explain that a wide range of employment opportunities exist, no matter what your education level isâfrom a two-year degree to a PhD. The video also contains suggestions for what high school students can do now to plan for a career in nanoscience.The video runs 2:02 and is accompanied by a background essay, standards alignment, and discussion questions. Windows to the Universe: Biomes and Ecosystems
The Windows to the Universe website is maintained by the National Earth Science Teachers Association, and it has been around since the mid-1990s. One particularly interesting area of the site focuses in on the world of biomes and ecosystems. For those who might be unacquainted with such matters, biomes are large regions of the world with similar plants, animals, and other living things that are adapted to the region's climate and conditions. Visitors can use the interactive map to explore these various biomes, and learn about the natural history and current conditions in the dry steppes, Alpine tundra, and a dozen other biomes. Each section contains photographs and a narrative essay that describes in summary detail the key features of each biome
Introduction to Alternative and Renewable Energy: Climate Change
This module is intended for use in a college-level introductory course in alternative and renewable energy. The document includes an overview of climate change. FOA Lecture 6: Fiber Optic Splices
This is the sixth lecture in the FOA series on fiber optics, covering splices. In this lecture the presenter discusses the uses of splices, types of splices such as fusion splices and mechanical splices, and the processes used for making each type of splice. FOA Lecture 13: Testing Fiber Visually
This is Lecture 13 in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture looks at ways to test fiber visually, tracing fibers, finding faults or areas of high loss, using microscopes to inspect connectors and interferometers to inspect singlemode connectors.
