    Online Radiology Images

    These online radiology images are part of the MedPix database, which is offered as a public service by the departments of radiology and biomedical informatics at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. The target audience for the site is "physicians and nurses, allied health professionals, medical students, graduate nursing students and other post-graduate trainees." Visitors to the homepage will find much of the materials here contained within two sections: Anatomy and Teaching File. In the Anatomy area, visitors can read through a radiologic anatomy glossary and atlas, look over labeled brain scans, and also look at different radiology images of the chest. Moving on, the Teaching File area contains radiology tutorials, online seminars, and even mock exams. The collection here is voluminous, containing over 11,000 teaching file cases and over 54,000 images

    This resource from the Teach Engineering website is designed to help students learn about water quality testing and basic water treatment designs. This resource was created by scientists at the Integrated Teaching and Learning Program in the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Users will find ten different sections that cover the learning objectives, vocabulary, associated activities, and assessment. The entire exercise should take twenty minutes in the classroom, and the features here include graphs, charts, helpful annotated photographs, and so on. The exercise may be used to raise awareness of the importance of clean drinking water in the developing world and how various innovations can help in achieving this goal

    Using computers to do science is a great way to get young people hooked on the enterprise, and mobile apps and other devices make this easier than ever. The Macs in Chemistry site features dozens of applications that will help users learn about chemistry (and more) through interactive activities, quizzes, and so on. In the At a Glance area, visitors can learn about the tutorials archived here, data analysis tools, and mobile science apps. This last section is a real gem, as it contains dozens of applications including everything from 29 interactive maps of the brain to chemistry formula exercises to a working seismograph. The rest of the applications are divided into alphabetical sections. Visitors should click on the Software Reviews area for timely and detailed reviews of each application's strengths and weaknesses.     This is Lecture 24 in the Fiber Optics Association's series on fiber optics. One of the most common questions is: "Should my communications system use fiber or copper - or wireless?" Fiber has been the clear winner in long distance communications since the mid 1980s for simple economics: nothing transmits large amounts of data over longer distances cheaper than fiber. For a long time, fiber and copper battled for the LAN desktop, but while they focused on each other, wireless took over the connection to user devices.     This is Lecture 22 in the Fiber Optics Association's lecture series on multimode fibers. In this lecture, the presenter briefly reviews modes in graded-index multimode fibers then shows how you can actually see the modes by using visible laser light from a VFL (visual fault locator.) The presenter will also show the effect of a mandrel wrap on the fiber, allowing you to actually see how the higher order modes are removed by the mandrel wrap. Running time for the lecture is 8:29.
