Understanding of 21st century learning is a demand for teachers as a pedagogical framework in the learning process. Schools must also implement competencies not only focusing on mastering the content of the main subjects, but also academic content at a higher level. In general, science learning in the classroom emphasizes practical work rather than involving students in the thinking process. The ability to reason can have important educational implications. The need for developing important competencies for 21st century learning outcomes through various types of reasoning that are appropriate to the situation. This study aims to determine the use of the Level of Inquiry (LoI) integrated assessment of the formal-post-formal operational reasoning possessed by prospective teacher students. The research sample used included 24 students who contracted invertebrate zoology practicum lectures for the 2019/2020 Academic Year. The research instrument used in the form of 14 questions of formal-post-formal operational reasoning and observation sheets. The results showed that the use of the LoI integrated assessment had a significant effect in developing formal-post-formal operational reasoning. Students have different formal-post-formal reasoning on each indicator. The indicator of the highest formal-post-formal operational reasoning of students is in proportional reasoning and the lowest is in metasystematic reasoning

Literary texts increase the learners’ proficiency of integrated language learning as they enable the learners to apply all macro and micro skills. This study evaluated the suitability of literary texts in grade ten English for Ethiopia textbook for language classrooms. The evaluation was made from two aspects-from the learners’ aspect (learners’ literary experience, linguistic proficiency, cultural background, level of understanding, age, interest) and from the text itself (the texts’ content, topics, themes, language, accessibility, free of bias). The study employed descriptive design which involves qualitative research method. Document (textbook) analysis was used as the main tool for gathering data. The result of the evaluation indicated that most of the literary texts do not consider the learners literary experience, cultural background, language competence, age and understanding level. Curriculum designers consider all the students in the country in general and classrooms in particular as if they had equal exposure to literary texts. The literary texts are not considering the students’ cultural background since almost all of the texts are written by foreign in foreign contexts. However, the literary texts are relatively good in relation to language skills aimed to be improved, their length, contents, topics and themes

With increasing of modern application of phenolic compound and their use in dettol preparation, discharge of these dangerous materials is stable for long time, too toxic and had a big risk on soil and aquatic microbes. These phenolic wastes cause severe harms to environment, human being and animals health in addition to the whole aquatic life. This study aimed to improve phenol degradation by Streptomyces flavabus BA4 previously isolated from wastewater samples.  This aerobic bacterium was belonged to filamentous bacteria with high activity to metabolize phenol carbon source, thus it can remove it from contaminated soil or wastewater. In liquid medium, growth was assayed as mg dry weight while residual phenol concentration was assayed using a colorimetric method. In minimal broth medium, Streptomyces flavabus BA4 was grown and the effects of different concentrations glucose, temperature, pH value and incubation period on phenol degradation were determined It was clear that addition of 1 g/l peptone enhanced both growth and phenol degradation was detected.  Addition of the electron donor, glucose enhanced growth but decreased phenol degradation at low concentrations (0.0-1.2 g/l). Maximum growth and phenol degradation were recorded at 30◦C in medium with pH 6.5-7 after 7 day of growth. Moreover, this isolate showed resistance to some heavy metal determined specially chromium up to 300 mg/l. Increasing heavy metal concentration decreased growth and dehydrogenates activity.  The removal rates of phenol and some heavy metals per mg dry weight of the selected bacterium were calculated for wastewater sample and were ranged from 97% for chromium to 6% for copper. In conclusion, Streptomyces flavabus BA4  is a promising  phenol degraded bacterium and adjusting some physical and biochemical factors enhancing both growth and removal process. The previous Streptomyces isolate can be used as a promising treatment for removal of phenol and some heavy metals, especially chromium which is a very toxic metal in wastewater

The Effectiveness of Experience and Teaching Methods on Evaluating Performance of Faculty Members – Statistical Study

Evaluating the performance of faculty members working in educational institutions has become one of the significant concerns in the field of teaching. With the aim of improving the promotion process of the faculty members, the current study aims to analyze the two important factors namely teaching experience and the methods of teaching. Previous studies have discussed that certain factors like renewing the contract of the faculties and their service period will be considered while making the decision process of faculty promotion in the educational institutions. Therefore, this study will examine the factors that affect the evaluation process of faculty members.  The study also examines to what extent the experience of teaching staff and their teaching methods will impact their performance as teachers in educational institutions. For this, the researcher adopted the statistical method - Pearson correlation and independent-measures t-stat for measuring the effectiveness of the hypothesis proposed in the study. Furthermore, this study concentrates on conducting experiments, based on the average faculty member evaluation of three ratings, which include student, head of the department, and HR. Results of the study indicated that the variable ‘teaching method’ is found more significant and correlated to the average faculty member evaluation, while the variable ‘faculty experience’ has not have a significant and strong correlation with the average rating of faculty member performance evaluation

    No full text
This study attempts to examine the effects of literature circles approach on students’ reading interest. More specifically, the study addressed the following research question: Is there statistically significant difference in students reading interest between the working reading practice and the literature circles practices? This research work was mainly experimental in design. Sixty randomly selected students (30 for the control group and 30 for the experimental group) were involved from Arba Minch. Pre-test and post-test were employed in order to obtain data required for the study. An independent sample t-test was employed to examine the effect of the intervention between the control and experimental groups. The experiment was conducted for two semesters on the experimental group. The effects of literature circles approach on students’ extensive reading was examined through an independent sample t-test. The average scores of the groups are 16.67 and 20.00 respectively for the post-test. The SD in post-test is computed as 5.09 and 3.25 respectively. The t-value is -3.85 and the P-value is 000. The difference between the two scores was found to be statistically significant, indicating that experimental group made significant improvement over its post-test compared to the control group. Therefore, the findings of the tests seem to indicate that the literature circle approach positively affected the students’ reading interest of the experimental group. Finally, based on the results conclusions and recommendations were made.
