    Democracy and New Media: Capturing Masculinity in Online News About Election Selfie

    Election selfie has been a quite phenomenon since the 2014 election in Indonesia. In the last election, 2019, there was a famous actor, Nicholas Saputra, who posted his inked finger selfie in his Instagram account as one of his campaign efforts for the youth to be involved in the election, and surprisingly, it became a bombshell in the online world. This study examined the representation of masculinity in the online new relates to the election selfie by Nicholas Saputra. This research involved five (5) online news articles from a reputable online news portal in Indonesia using a critical discourse analysis perspective that was adopted from the Sara Mills model. It was found that traditional masculinity was represented in research objects, which were the strengths and the practical way of life. Moreover, it was also found that in terms of subject-object position, there was no balance in the opportunity to speak between the subject and object. Finally, as to the writer-reader position, the writer also held a more significant privilege to decide the position of the reader

    The Public Relations of the Bengkulu's People Representative Council Candidates

    Along with political development, public relations professions have become a more widespread profession used by many organizations. In politics, public relations is useful for building a positive image in people's minds for particular purposes. In light of that, the research attempted to analyze and describe political public relations in building the reputation of the 2019 legislative candidates for Indonesia's People Representative of the Republic of Indonesia in Bengkulu Province. The research was designed with a case-study method, and the research found that the candidates investigated had no conceptual knowledge regarding political public relations strategy. Consequently, their public relations activities, in terms of political communication, did not work effectively. The research also found that the candidates investigated, which was running in Bengkulu province, had not managed their images and relations with media in terms of political public relations. Finally, the research found that political public relations were still conducted traditionally, making the impact less strong to furnish the image of the candidates

    University Students Behavior in Searching and Disseminating COVID-19 Online Information

    Various accesses to information of COVID-19 can be reached through the internet. The internet, which can be used by anyone, anytime, and anywhere, pervades the boundary of people's dimensions of life, time, and space. Social media is the platform used by internet users to search for information about COVID-19. From the perspective of technological determinism, technology determines and shapes human life. This research attempts to analyze the use of social media for searching for information regarding COVID-19 and aims to comprehend the use of social media for searching for information regarding COVID-19 among Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta's students. The research is essential to map out student's behavior in searching for information regarding COVID-19. The research found that students were digital natives that used social media for searching for information about COVID-19. The students were digitally literate in using social media to search for information regarding COVID-19 by verifying information before disseminating it on their social media account

    Kendala Dalam Membangun Pemahaman Literasi Media Televisi dan Cara Mengatasinya (Studi Kasus di Kota Kupang)

    This research was motivated by the habit of Kupang middle school adolescents in watching television without the ability in media literacy. This research aimed to discover the problems faced in establishing the adolescents’ understanding of television literacy and the ways forward to overcome the issues. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study as a method. The results found five primary obstacles, namely the character of the parents and the teenagers in treating television literacy, the uneven distribution of media literacy socialization, the ineffective controlling function of KPID NTT, budget constraints, and broadcasting institutions. The solutions were NTT`s KPID collaborates with universities, schools, youth organizations, and creates critical media communities. The BP3A inserted relevant materials on media assistance and worked with the children's forum of Kupang City. AFB TV introduces the making process of television programs, and Kupang Christian Junior High School 1 invites NTT`s KPID to school.This research was motivated by the habit of junior high school teenagers in Kupang City on watching television without the media literacy ability. This study purpose was to discover the obstacle in building understanding of television media literacy and how to overcome it. This was a qualitative approach with a case study method. The results showed that the obstacles in building understanding of television media literacy are coming from parents and the teenagers themselves, the uneven distribution of media literacy socialization, the weakness of controlling functions from KPID, budget constraints, and the uninvolved of broadcasting institutions.     History of Entertainment Magazines within the Politics of Power and Sexuality

    This article discussed the history of the entertainment magazines in Indonesia. By using the historiography method, this paper interpreted the dynamics of entertainment magazines from its birth until gradually being run over by market competition that coupled with women magazines, television, and pornography. This article also highlighted Sukarno's Political Manifesto in the practice of entertainment magazines during the Guided Democracy era. Entertainment Magazine became an instrument for the dissemination of political jargon through Kebaya. It constructed as a national identity to obstruct western ideology and culture while female sexuality that displayed feminine and sexy in kebaya were objectified through the male gaze

    YouTube Endorsement and Changes in the Web 2.0's Advertising Industry

    The internet provides an alternative for product owners to advertise with new media. Web 2.0 is an advanced phase of Internet technology that allows users to contribute to Internet content, which ultimately makes the Internet interactive. This study provides an overview of how YouTube channel endorsements change the advertising process and patterns of interaction between advertising industry players. This study describes three patterns of interaction that occur in the advertising industry in the context of YouTube channel endorsement. Media Ecology Theory is used as a foundation for thinking, while the research model used is Case Study. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five sources who worked in the advertising industry. Three of them work in advertising agencies, and two other sources work as YouTubers, and in a Multi-Channel Network company. The research found how YouTube channel endorsement altered patterns of interaction and production processes in the advertising industry. YouTube channel endorsement also brought new players in the advertising industry, namely Multi-Channel Network

    Google Trends and Information Seeking Trend of COVID-19 in Indonesia

    WHO has declared COVID-19 as a pandemic due to its rapid increase in cases outside China. COVID-19 has also affected a growing number of countries. However, the Indonesia government responded to the declaration in a not-serious manner, which has generated uncertainty circumstance among its public. This circumstance has driven people to consume information as much as they are possible to consume. This study aims to map out the trend of information-seeking concerning COVID-19 in Indonesia using Google Trends and to compare it to the information available on Indonesia's Ministry of Health official website from January until March. This study was descriptive quantitative, which used Google Trends as data collection tools. The research found that information seeking concerning COVID-19 has been increasing since the end of January. Government statements were found as the trigger of the information-seeking activity escalation and also served as the reason behind different information-seeking trends each month

    Defining Communication Problems in Stakeholder Relations Based on Stakeholder Theory

    Relationship with stakeholders has been widely seen as a communication phenomenon. Indeed, communication has long played an essential role in stakeholder theory. This study analyzed stakeholder relations in the communication discipline, which still left a room for review, based on stakeholder theory in the context of company management. Specifically, this study focused on both concepts in stakeholder relations, which was studied in communication science, and stakeholder theory, which was grounded on business ethics and strategic management. The concepts were analyzed using a social-oriented framework, and the aim was to disentangle and make evident the communication problems in this issue. The study used a literature review, to map the body of knowledge, and a qualitative approach based on a multi-disciplinary perspective. This study recommended that stakeholder relations be a communication discipline, and it should examine stakeholders based on two interrelated analyses, namely normative and strategic. Stakeholder relations should focus on normative-ethical studies, which were rooted in idealism. The strategic-operative aspects, which originated from realism, by contrast, could be delegated to other disciplines, such as public relations, organizational communication, corporate communication, strategic communication, to communication management

    Imbalance Identity in E-Sports News Intersectionality on Covid-19 Pandemic Situation

The most qualified alternative to answer these needs for everyone in the digital age is the E-sport. Trying to take advantage of this opportunity, Bubu Gaming, as an Indonesian digital sports games marketer, initiated "LiveStream Aid 2020" with the theme "PlayFromHome, Stay Safe, Donate." Tirto.id and Kompas.com covered the two-day event. However, researchers interrogate those two news frames and discover different perspectives. Guided by Entman Framing Analysis with the theory of intersectionality, the results obtained indicate the imbalance of identity in those news frames. Tirto.id viewed from the category of structural intersectionality and built the reader's opinion that the government, through Sandiaga Uno, supports these activities. On the other hand, Kompas.com put the name of Pevita Pearce without adequate narrative so that it can be categorized as representational intersectionality

    Radicalism Prevention through Propaganda Awareness on Social Media

    Dissemination of information through social media is prone to high school students because of its high social media usage activities. Students need to have propaganda awareness (awareness of the existence of propaganda practices), which is mainly disseminated through news or other media content. By having propaganda awareness, students can analyze information or news, so they can sift essential information, including information that they wish to redistribute. This research used a mixed method. The data was collected with a focus group discussion and propaganda test to students of State Madrasah Aliyah (MAN) in the Yogyakarta Special Province. The result of the propaganda test before the simulation showed the strong influence of the media on student attitudes. After simulation and retesting, the effect decreased significantly. Propaganda awareness can be a provision for students to be more alert in filtering information from social media that contain radicalism
