    Association between Personal Hygiene and Incidence of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis among Workers at Widodaren Plantation in Jember Regency

    Soil-Transmitted Helmithiasis is an infection caused by intestinal nematode worms which in the process of transmission requires soil as media to fullfil its life cycle from non-infective forms to infective forms. The number of infections is influenced by personal hygiene. Personal hygiene consists of the habit of washing hands, cutting nails, eating, defecating and ownership of latrines, and the use of personal protective equipment. This study used a cross sectional research design conducted at Widodaren Plantation with 68 people of samples. Stool examination was determined by kato-katz method, sedimentation, and floatation to detect the presence of Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH) eggs, while personal hygiene was assessed using questionnaires. Questionnaire and stool examination datas were processed using SPSS data analysis with chi-square method. The results of this study found 26 respondents who were positive for soil-trasmitted helminthiasis infection. The most frequent worm species obtained in this study were Ascaris lumbricoides (57.7%), followed by multiple infections between Hookworm and A. lumbricoides (21.3%), and Hookworm (19.2%). In the chi-square analysis the results were significant between personal hygiene and soil-transmitted helminthiasis with p value of 0,000 (p <0.05). So, it can be concluded that a bad personal hygiene factor has a significant relationship to the incidence of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis at Widodaren Plantation.     The Effectiveness of Vitamin D Addition to Decreasing Blood Glucose Levels of Hyperglycemic Mice Model with Glimepirid Therapy

    Abstract Low 25-hydrocyvitamin D (25(OH)D3) levels are usually found in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of fasting blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic mice model with glimepirid single therapy, hyperglycemic mice model with vitamin D, and mice model of hyperglycemic with glimepirid therapy plus vitamin D. This study used the true experimental research design with the randomized posttest only control group design. There were 25 male mice (Mus musculus) strain Balb/C with 20-30 g body weight and 2-3 months old which were grouped into 5 groups. The negative control group (K1) was injected with placebo and the positive control group (K2) was injected with STZ 150 mg/kgBW i.p. Groups P1, P2, and P3 were given STZ injection of 150 mg/kgBW i.p and given glimepirid 0.26 mg/kgBW; vitamin D 6,5 ml/kgBW; glimepirid 0,26 mg/kgBW with vitamin D supplementation 6,5 ml/kgBW. The results of the Tukey post hoc tests obtained differences in the mean of delta KGD between groups P1 and K2 = 122,55; in group P2 with K2 = 81,60; and in group P3 with K2 = 74,40. From these data, it can be concluded that in the group given glimepirid plus vitamin D there was no additional effectiveness in decreasing fasting blood glucose levels of hyperglycemic mice model compared to the group given only glimepirid therapy and the group given vitamin D alone.     Potential of Cocoa Ethanol Extract Toward Nematocyst Tubul Firing Inhibition of Physalia Utriculus Toxin In Vitro

    There was estimated 150 million envenomation cases due to jellyfish stings occur globally every year. 100 from 10,000 jellyfish species in the world known to be dangerous, one them is Physalia utriculus. The aim of this study was to determine the potential of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) ethanol extract toward nematocyst tubul firing inhibition of jellyfish (Physalia utriculus) toxin in vitro. The method was true experimental design with post test only control group design. The study divided into 8 groups: 1 normal control, 1 positive control, 1 negative control, and 5 treatments grups by giving cocoa ethanol extract with concentration 20%, 2%, 0.2%, 0.02%, 0.002%. The observation was made by calculating the percentage number of firing nematocysts. The result showed average percentage of firing nematocyst in the normal control group was 42.50 ± 3.18, positive control group was 37.97 ± 5.57, negative control group was 52.44 ± 2.98, and treatment group which given with cocoa ethanol extract 20%, 2%, 0.2%, 0.02%, 0.002% were 48.24 ± 5.37; 40.62 ± 7.10; 29.45 ± 5.39; 37.60 ± 9.78; 41.11 ± 3.92, respectively. The One Way Annova statistical results test show significance value 0.001 (p≤0.05). The conclusion of this study was the cocoa ethanol extract with concentration 0.2% has most potential to inhibit the jellyfish (P. utriculus) nematocyst tubule firing in vitro.     Analysis of Personal Protective Equipments Pesticides Usage Effects on Health Complaints of Farmers in Pringgondani Village Sumberjambe District Jember Regency

    Jember is one of the districts in East Java Province with the majority of its population working as farmers. Pringgondani Village Farmers in Jember use pesticides when farming. Pesticides contain harmful chemicals. Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipments) can protect farmers when mixing and spraying pesticides. This study aims to analyze correlation between PPE pesticides usage and health complaints of farmers in Pringgondani Village Sumberjambe District Jember Regency. Cross sectional surveys were conducted on 50 samples. Data were collected by interview using questionnaire. Data were analyzed by chi square test to know correlation between PPE pesticides use (protective clothing, head protection, mask, gloves and boots) and health complaints (headache, increased fatigue, itching and nausea). Chi square test result showed significance 0,043 (p <0,05) where there was a correlation between head protector use and health complaint of respondent with contingency coefficient (r) equal to 0,318. The conclusion is that there is a correlation between the head protection use and health complaints of farmers in Pringgondani Village Sumberjambe District Jember Regency with sufficient correlation.     Antioxidant Effect of Kenitu leaf Etanol Extract (Chrysophyllum Cainito L.) on Wistar Rat Induced Cyclophosphamid

    Recently, cancer is  globally the second highest cause of death with a total death about 8.8 million in 2015. There are some  therapy of cancer, one of them  by using cyclophosphamid chemotherapy, but this regimen has side effects of bone marrow depression through its active metabolite of 4 hydroxy cyclophpsphamid and increase ROS which will  effect on serum MDA elevation. Increased MDA serum can be prevented by giving an antioxidant or plants that have various antioxidants, such as kenitu  leaves. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of antioxidants in  kenitu leaves (Chrysophyllum cainito L.)) extract  to MDA serum leves of  cyclophosphamid-induced mice. This study used quasi experimental method with post test only controlled group  design by using 1 normal control group, 1 negative control group (cyclophosphamid), and 5 treatment groups (dose of extract 50mg/kgBW; 100mg/kgBW; 200mg/kgBW; 400mg/kgBB; and 800mg / kgBW). The results of the treatment group dose 100mg/kgBB showed the  average of MDA serum levels was 1.94 μg/mL which is the highest decrease in this study. The result of Kendall Tau correlation test showed the effect of kenitu leaves extract to MDA serum level had p = 0.013 and correlation coefficient = 0.431.   Keywords: kenitu leaf etanol extract, cyclophosphamid, MDA serum    &nbsp

    Correlation between Cholinesterase Levels and Blood Glucose Levels in Farmers Exposed to Organophosphate Pesticide in Desa Sukorambi Kabupaten Jember

    The use of organophosphate pesticides by farmers can cause long-term health risks, one of which is an increase in blood glucose levels. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the levels of cholinesterase as an indicator of exposure to organophosphate pesticides and blood glucose of farmers in Sukorambi Village, Jember Regency. Secondary data in the form of general characteristics of the sample were obtained through interviews, while the primary data was obtained from examining the levels of cholinesterase and blood glucose levels of farmers at the Biochemical Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Jember University. The research method is observational-analytic with cross-sectional study design. Based on the results of statistical analysis using the Spearman correlation test (p = 0.05), it was concluded that there was no significant relationship between the two variables (p = 0.0802)

    The Role of Pili Protein 38,6 kDa Klebsiella pneumoniae as a Hemagglutinin and Adhesin Protein which Serves as a Virulence Factor

    Klebsiella pneumoniae is an infectious bacteria in various parts of the body. The presence of proteins in pili that will bind to cell surface receptors (adhesin proteins) and cell membrane sugar molecules (hemagglutinin proteins) is a very influential factor in the ability of K. pneumoniae to enter the human body. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of pili 38.6 kDa K. pneumoniae protein as a hemagglutinin and adhesin protein which functions as a virulence factor. This type of research is pure experimental research using the electrophoresis method (SDS-PAGE) to obtain protein. The protein obtained was then tested for hemagglutination and adhesion test using erythrocyte cells and enterocytes of BALB / C mice to determine their role as hemagglutinin and adhesin proteins. Conclusion of this study pili protein 38.6 kDa Klebsiella pneumoniae acts as a hemagglutinin and adhesion protein which functions as a virulence factor.     Carpal Tunnel Syndrome frequently experienced by workers whose daily activities always use repetitive movements on the wrist. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a syndrome that can actually be prevented because there is no risk factor that can’t be changed except the age factor. Previous research has shown a fairly high prevalence about 42%-93% in factory workers. This study aims to determine the factors that affect the occurence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in women workers warehouse tobacco. This is an analytical observational study with cross sectional study design which using 50 samples who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Instrument in this research is clinical questionnaire to diagnose CTS and Phalen test. Spearman correlation test result obtained long working p=0,036,  r=0,298 and pain intensity p= <0,01, r=0,635 which means there is significant correlation with moderate strength between length of work with CTS and strong correlation between the intensity of pain with CTS.     Analysis of Low–level Cadmium Exposure Effects on HUVECs (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells) Cell Viability and Morphology

    Cadmium is a heavy metal that could be found in daily life. This metal has a toxicity, could contaminate the environment, and affect human health. The main aim of this research was to find the effect of low concentration Cadmium exposure in acute time toward HUVECs cell morphology and viability.In a True experimental research with in vitro model using HUVECs cell, HUVECs cell was divided into four groups. One control group (without CdCl2 induction) and three treatment groups with CdCl2 induction with various concentrations, 0,153 µg/L, 1,53 µg/L and 15,3 µg/L. The trial was repeated five times for each group. Cell morphology was observed with an inverted microscope. Cell viability was examined by MTT assay. Data were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis statistical test and continue with the Man Whitney test. Correlation test was using Spearman.Morphology of treatment group HUVECs cell induced by CdCl2 concentration 15,3 µg/L looked significantly different compared with control group (p<0.05). Cell viability on group HUVECs induced by CdCl2 15,3 µg/L significantly different compared with the control group. The correlation test resulted R= -0,665 with probability 0.001 which means the higher concentration of CdCl2 the lower the viability of cells. Cadmium in low concentration induces cell morphology change and reduce cell viability. Keywords: HUVEC, cadmium, cell morphology, cell viability. &nbsp

    The Risk of Work Posture Did Not Affect on Worker’s Disability Index with Low Back Pain Complaints in PT Muroco Jember

    The existence of various industrial centers in Jember Regency has an impact on the high absorption of labor coming from the local community, because most of the production activities are still done by using the power / physical strength of man. Low back pain (LBP) is one of the symptoms of musculoskeletal pain in the lower back, not a disease or diagnosis for a disease. The high risk factor of LBP complaints occurring in industrial workers is the work posture. Patients with chronic LBP complaints may experience affective disorders such as depression and psychosomatic disorders that will lead to a poorer prognosis, while also often experiencing disabilities that implicate the quality of life of patients. This study aims to determine the risk of work posture on worker’s disability index with low back pain complaints in PT Muroco Jember. The type of this research is observational analytic with cross sectional research design which conducted on 31 workers of PT Muroco which fulfill the criteria of inclusion and exclusion. The risk of work posture was obtained by employee observation and completion of the modified quick exposure check questionnaire while the disability index was obtained by filling the modified oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire. The result of the Gamma correlation between the two variables is p = 0,135. It shows that there is no correlation between risk of work posture and worker’s disability index with low back pain complaint in PT Muroco Jember
