Gesto e matematica
Gesture and Mathematics
The article examines the theoretical elements that can support a pragmatic-enactive approach to mathematical cognition through the concept of “gesture”. The investigation into this conceptual tool highlights its potential usefulness in understanding the phylogeny of mathematical cognition. Giuseppe Longo’s perspective on the gestural origins of mathematical cognition is used as a reference point, which offers interesting insights but also presents some critical issues regarding his interpretation of intentionality and gesture. The article, therefore, aims to frame Longo’s proposal within a pragmatic-enactive context. From this perspective, gesture is viewed as the sensorimotor element that contributes to the processes of meaning construction in interactions between organisms and between organisms and their environment, which underpin the emergence of abstract language and formal reasoning
The Audiences of Poetry: Forms of Verse Literariness in 2000s Italy
While occasional moments of openness and shifts within the traditional ‘poetry audience’ were not absent in the last century, it was in the early 2000s that poetry began expanding into middle-brow and even low-brow circuits with unprecedented intensity. The rise of a distinctly successful poetic production, aimed at diverse audience segments – often far less specialized than traditional poetry readers – has become an increasingly visible phenomenon. This trend spans from the sentimental, saccharine verses of instapoets such as Gio Evan and Francesco Sole to the playful, cabaret-like poetry of Guido Catalano. It also includes authors like Candiani, Arminio, Gualtieri, and Vivinetto. This study explores the reasons behind this shift and maps its different forms of expression. It adopts a functionalist approach inspired by Vittorio Spinazzola’s thought and Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology. First, it classifies authors and texts according to their target audiences. Then, it examines the aesthetic premises of sub-institutional poetry, comparing them with the values that shape legitimate poetry. Finally, it analyzes this poetry’s stylistic features, emphasizing its tendency toward epideixis, oratory, and sentimental expression.
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between Roberto Saviano’s novel La paranza dei bambini (2016) and its film adaptation directed by Claudio Giovannesi in 2019, which won the Best Screenplay award at the 69th Berlinale. Following in the footsteps of the renowned bestseller Gomorra (2006), the novel immediately demonstrated its adaptability, as proved by its theatrical adaptation, which premiered at the Nuovo Teatro Sanità in Naples on April 19, 2017. But how does La paranza dei bambini succeed in portraying the connection between teenagers and the Camorra on the page and on the screen (and on stage)? In what ways does the movie contribute to shaping the collective imagination of the criminal underworld? And how does the film succeed in reaching such a diverse audience both in cinemas and via streaming platforms? While the first part of this essay will focus on the novel’s engagement with the criminal imaginary and its connection to Saviano’s debut work Gomorra, the second part will examine the dialogue between the novel and the screenplay, exploring stylistic and thematic peculiarities, recurring motifs, similarities, and differences.

Visual storytelling and learning Italian grammatical aspect by Swedish students
This work focuses on the teaching of grammatical aspect in Italian to Swedish students and presents the results of a pilot study aimed at determining whether the use of moving visual images can help learners choose between the Imperfetto and the Passato Prossimo in a narrative text. Assuming that the distinction between perfective and imperfective aspect corresponds to the division between foreground and background, and that this division is based on principles of visual perception, watching a video that tells a story should help learners reconstruct the foreground/background relationships between events in the narrative structure, and consequently, it should help them correctly choose the Italian verb forms expressing the distinction between perfective and imperfective aspect. The results of the study show, on the one hand, that the use of visual input can lead to an improvement in learners’ performance when they are asked to choose between Imperfetto and Passato Prossimo. On the other hand, our study shows that visual input alone is not sufficient to prompt learners of L2 Italian to think in terms of foreground and background, and thus to use this distinction in order to correctly choose between Imperfetto and Passato Prossimo. We propose that specific training is required
An investigation into the acquisition of the imperfect tense in Italian L2 learners
The present article focuses on the analysis concerning the acquisition process of imperfect time by learners of Italian L2. Briefly analysing the evolutionary process that leads us from pre-basic to post-basic varieties, this study pursues the aim of clarifyng the gradual construction of the Italian verbal system in learning “interlingues” (a system which, as several authors have repeatedly highlighted, seems to be the main difficulty among foreign learners of Italian) with a special focus on the grammatical time of the imperfect. The present research will therefore be structured in two different moments. The first part will focus on the analysis of imperfect time, on the process that regulates its acquisition and on its close dependence on the grammatical category of verbal action; the second part, using a study conducted on a cross-section of 14 Italian L2 learners, individually interviewed at two different facilities located in the province of Trapani, will show, in practice, what was expressed in the first part of the work
The Geography of the Italian Peninsula in L2/FL Italian Textbooks: Discursive Stereotypes between the Southern Question and Touristification
Reviewing teaching materials allows for a critical reflection on the widespread — whether conscious or unconscious — presence of stereotypes concerning local specificities in L2/FL Italian textbooks. Such representations result in a partial development of pluricultural competence and raise issues of ideological significance. Through the analysis of fourteen currently used textbooks and drawing on discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and quantitative methods, a consistent and problematic narrative of the Italian peninsula emerges. A progressive, pioneering North is contrasted with a stereotypically picturesque yet culturally and economically backward South, in which touristification conceals new forms of internal colonization
L’INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE NELL’INSEGNAMENTO-APPRENDIMENTO DELL’ITALIANO: UNA PROPOSTA PER LO “STUDENTE-RICERCATORE”
Artificial Intelligence in Italian Language Education: Proposing the “Student as Researcher” Approach
The paper explores the potential applications and implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the teaching and learning of the Italian language, proposing an approach that aims to move beyond traditional grammar instruction. The study examines Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini, analyzing how the ability to formulate pertinent queries and critically evaluate the responses provided by AI not only fosters active engagement with the language but also transforms the student into a genuine “teacher as researcher”, thus overcoming the passivity resulting from repetitive grammatical exercises. The main aim of the work, therefore, is to explore the possible applications and repercussions of Artificial Intelligence in the context of teaching and learning Italian. The study has demonstrated not only the current limitations of these systems in deep conceptual understanding and in managing linguistic nuances, particularly in languages other than English, but it has also highlighted the importance of training students’ (meta)cognitive and (meta)linguistic skills and knowledge.

(Pseudo-)French Graffiti Writing in the Historic Centre of Naples
Approaching tags as writing in public space, this paper analyses a limited corpus of tags (signatures/pseudonyms) traceable to (pseudo-)French – whether in standard orthography or hybrid/creative forms – documented in Naples’ historic centre and the adjacent Piazza Garibaldi area (2018–2025) through ongoing, non-systematic data collection. Interest in tags stems from their dual status: semiotic–material (a glocal practice, a graphic layer, and an index of identity) and a potential linguistic dimension, activated when passers-by read them as words. The aims are to: (i) document and characterise, on the basis of the corpus, the presence and forms of (pseudo-)French tags; (ii) assess the extent to which they embed elements of French in the urban fabric, contributing to the configuration of the urban linguistic landscape. The qualitative analysis integrates three levels – linguistic (relations to French and possible interlinguistic readings), grapho-stylistic (formal features and points of anchorage in local/European scenes), and spatial (locations, densities, recurrences) – with a comparative focus on the historic centre and Piazza Garibaldi, an area with a higher presence of francophone migrants. The relatively high density of (pseudo-)French tags in the historic centre – an area of high symbolic, cultural, and tourist salience – plausibly points to youth, artistic, and translocal circuits rather than to resident francophone communities. On an exploratory basis, the paper treats linguistic visibility as a possible dimension of tags: when recognised as words, passers-by unfamiliar with the codes of graffiti writing may treat them as verbal signs rather than merely visual-stylistic traces with an identity-marking function. In the absence of explicit semantic anchors, the co-occurrence of orthographic cues with recurrent graphic/stylistic choices can steer interpretation towards French. From this perspective, (pseudo-)French tags can confer new symbolic valences on places and serve to anchor French locally, to enrich the city’s visual multilingualism, and to foster the translocal circulation of graphic and linguistic repertoires
Words Beyond the Water: The Linguistic Landscape of a Symbolic Neighborhood in the City of Parma
This jointly authored article is the outcome of a collaboration between two researchers from different fields (sociology and linguistics) and presents the results of a photographic survey and subsequent analysis of the linguistic landscape of the Oltretorrente, the most traditionally popular and multicultural neighborhood in Parma. In line with current research practices, data collection was conducted with the aid of a digital tool (the Lingscape app: https://lingscape.app/) and complemented by qualitative data gathered through interviews with key actors shaping the linguistic landscape. The photographic corpus yielded quantitative insights into the written presence of languages other than Italian, their relationships in terms of linguality and distribution, and the directional patterns conveyed by the signage. The analysis also provided reflections on the status of both the local dialect (parmigiano) and the main global lingua franca (English) within the neighborhood’s written linguistic landscape. Meanwhile, the interview data shed light on how residents and visitors perceive the neighborhood’s multilingualism and its written representations. Taken together, the two corpora form the basis for a more comprehensive mapping of Parma’s linguistic landscape and suggest possible directions for reusing the photographic material within the frame of language education.Words Beyond the Water: The Linguistic Landscape of a Symbolic Neighborhood in the City of Parma
