Symposium Musicum: The politics of place in music theatre
This article delves into the performative aspects of sound and listening through Symposium Musicum, an experimental music theatre project that embraced an ecological approach to sound and culture perception. Situated in the Eastern Slovak Republic, this autoethnographic case study examines the relationship between the Roma population and contemporary Slovak society, shedding light on new spaces for intercultural dialogue and offering fresh perspectives on perceiving and imagining a multicultural society.
Drawing from experiential and conceptual frameworks of sound, listening, and performance, the study uncovers the transformative potential of sound as a catalyst for critical thinking. It argues that active listening processes serve as forms of knowledge in action, revealing territorial and cultural transformations that shape ideologies and ecosystems in which individuals are embedded.
Furthermore, the article explores the political potentials of listening to sound, investigating how it influences and intersects with contemporary territories, including ethnicity, gender, and social belonging. It examines the behaviours and strategies that can be derived from experiences of listening and being heard, and delves into the concept of "social sound practice" as an attitude that explores sound within its social setting, ultimately leading to positive change.
By focusing on the case study Symposium Musicum, which was part of the 9th edition of the contemporary theatre festival UM UM (2019), the article offers insightful perspectives on the intricate interplay between sound, performance, and society. It provides a nuanced understanding of sound\u27s potential to transform and provoke critical engagement within contemporary society
Emergence: Examining Gender in Music through Contemporary Opera
What does it mean to be part of a music industry that, for centuries, has ignored your perspective, undermined your talent and confidence, objectified your body, and systematically erased composers like you from the canon? An acclaimed Australian composer here shares aspects of her current research project on contemporary opera, funded through the Australian Research Council. Incorporating research undertaken with leading practitioners of contemporary opera and data from the author\u27s recent report, Women and Minority Genders in Music (Wilcox and Shannon 2023), this paper interweaves first-source interview data, auto-ethnographic reflection, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and a selective overview of contemporary global practice to examine the structural inequity at opera’s core, and new disruptive practice that challenges the status quo. The author ties together theoretical discourse on intersectional feminism (Lorde 1984), feminist listening (Lehmann and Palme 2022), and acoustic ecology (Westerkamp 2002) to outline a compositional approach that engages experimentally with sound through guided improvisations on music and text, extended techniques, explorations of embodiment, "deep listening" (Oliveros 2005), and consultative conceptual development that respects and welcomes difference. Extending this to a broader context, she suggests frameworks for more inclusive practice and audience engagement in opera
Metaphors of Immersion. Stereoscopes, 3D Vision and Photography in O.W. Holmes’ Writings and Inventions
Esteemed physician and writer, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was also a leading figure in the stereoscope craze that swept the United States in the second half of the 19th century. He not only designed and promoted a particularly successful version of the stereoscope but also provided insightful commentary on its use and impact. This device, capable of producing a vivid illusion of three-dimensionality, had a significant influence on both technological advancements and cultural practices of the time. Adopting an interdisciplinary focus that intersects media archaeology and metaphorology, this paper will explore the rhetoric and material configurations of the stereoscope as designed and promoted by Holmes and Joseph L. Bates. The main objective is to show how the discursive communication surrounding this device, along with its ergonomic design, shaped both the identity and moral connotations of the technology, as well as the immersive practices it fostered. By focusing on two key essays published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1859 and 1861, this study will reconstruct Holmes’ complex metaphorology of technical reproduction and stereoscopic illusion, highlighting the central aesthetic, social, and political themes at play

During the last decades there has been a considerable increase in the incidence of psychiatric disorders worldwide along with an increased need to improve both inpatient and community-based nursing care, given the significant negative impact that these conditions have on patients\u27 quality of life. Very frequently people suffering from acute psychiatric disorders go to emergency rooms (ER) to receive immediate nursing care and support, so it’s essential for the triage nurse to be able to evaluate the patients with appropriate and specific assessment tools.
AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the literature searching for specific assessment tools for the mental health triage (MHT), afterwards it’s been developed an evidence-based assessment tool together with an algorithm, both suitable for the Italian healthcare system.
METHODS: The inclusion and exclusion criteria were established, after that was conducted a literature research in the databases of PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, PsycInfo and Cochrane Library; 16 articles were selected for the qualitative review.
RESULTS: All the studies included in the narrative review emphasized the importance of the use of specific tools for the MHT, since they ensure an objective and standardized evaluation and the assignment of the correct level of priority to the patients; this allows patients to avoid long waiting times and overcrowding of the ER, thus limiting the patients’ distress.
CONCLUSIONS: Since the study’ results showed the benefits for both patients and nurse staff related to the use of specific assessment tools, it’s recommended their use in all the healthcare facilities
Proactive Monitoring of Chronic Conditions Using WMDs in Primary Care: Protocol of a Multicenter Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial Across Italy and Finland
This multicentre feasibility randomized controlled trial aims to develop and evaluate a proactive monitoring intervention utilizing WMDs for individuals with chronic conditions in primary care settings across Italy and Finland.
METHODS: The intervention will be developed following the Medical Research Council framework, guided by the Self-Determination Theory. Focus groups with stakeholders will inform the design of the intervention procedures, training materials, and strategies to promote sustained WMD use by facilitating competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The feasibility trial will randomize participants to either the WMD intervention group, receiving proactive monitoring by family and community nurses, or a control group receiving standard care. Outcomes include usability, feasibility (recruitment, attrition, technical difficulties), implementation (continued use, adherence), quality of life, self-efficacy, and health service utilization. Qualitative data will explore cultural differences between the two countries.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: By prioritizing stakeholder engagement, theoretical grounding, and pragmatic considerations during the intervention development phase, this study aims to develop a feasible and effective proactive monitoring program to enhance chronic condition management through sustained WMD use in primary care across different European contexts, enhancing the opportunities for nurses to have advanced tools for patient monitoring and self-efficacy strategies
The Burden of Diseases and Injury through The Lens of Standard Expected Years of Life Lost: The Lost Productivity and The Distribution of Health Attainment in Countries of Different Health Systems
Background: The productivity loss attributable to the burden of diseases in different country contexts reflect the effectiveness of the context specific measures for population health development. So, this study provides insights into the productivity loss from the burden of diseases.
Methods: Using country specific subnational level data, we have quantified the burden of diseases and the consequential lost productivity in two lower middle-income countries i.e., India and Kyrgyzstan; three upper middle-income countries i.e., Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation; and one high income country, France. We have computed standard expected years of life lost (SEYLL) as the measure of disease burden, and quantified the present value of lost earnings (PVLE) using our 3P approach (population, participation and productivity).
Results: Our subnational level analysis finds an overall declining trend of SEYLL across regions in each country except in Belarus from 2017 onwards, and in France. We also find that the cumulative percentage loss of PVLE per SEYLL mostly exceeds cumulative GDP per capita growth of the country during the study years.
Conclusion: We have captured the value of earnings and quantified the avoidable loss for the society/country in different contexts and thus, this study demonstrates the potential contribution of population health development to the poverty alleviation programme in low – and middle – income countries
