LA LINGUA DEL IESSE. OSSERVAZIONI LINGUISTICHE NELL’«ITALIA RANDAGIA» DI AMY BERNARDY

    No full text
The language of iesse. Linguistic observations in Amy Bernardy’s Italia randagia In 1913, Florentine journalist and historian Amy Bernardy (1880-1959) published Italia randagia, a detailed account of the material and moral conditions of Italian emigrants in the United States. Although largely overlooked by the academic community, which has only recently dedicated predominantly biographical-literary studies to her work, Bernardy was the first journalist to provide a faithful depiction of the lives of Italian communities overseas (see Prezzolini 1960). Of the rare available sources, very few focus on Bernardy’s attention to the linguistic issues faced by Italian immigrants in North America. This paper aims to offer a close reading, from a historical-linguistic perspective, of the chapters in Italia randagia that examine the characteristics of an English «rivestito di forme italiane» (Bernardy, 1913: 89), a language that, while gradually losing its identity on an individual level, remains collectively anchored to its Italian roots. The attempts to adapt to the new social and cultural context are reflected in a language with blurred features, «italiana d’aspetto» and «inglese d’etimologia» (p. 91). This linguistic shift marks the transition from the «italiano del sì» to the «italiano del iesse» (p. 93). &nbsp

    GLI ITALIANISMI IN GIAPPONESE. UN’INTRODUZIONE

    No full text
Italianisms in Japanese. An introduction The paper provides a general introduction to the presence of words of Italian origin in Japanese, comparing their frequency and diffusion to the predominantly larger body of English loanwords. It highlights the specialization (and its evolution over time) of Italian words within specific semantic fields, such as music, fine arts, and food. The paper then analyzes the phonological differences between the two languages, which constrain the adaptation of Italian sounds and sound sequences in Japanese. In doing so, it proposes that these differences are particularly emphasized by the fact that loanwords in Japan are transcribed using the katakana syllabary. This script requires that their phonological form be adapted to align with the features the Japanese writing system can represent, excluding phonological characteristics that are not part of Japanese phonology. The phonological changes that Italian words undergo during their adaptation to Japanese phonology and writing are listed and described in summary. The paper focuses on phenomena such as sound substitutions, vowel insertions, coarticulation-induced palatalizations, among others. Additionally, some attention is given to the criteria used to incorporate Italian loanwords in Japanese into the OIM (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo) classification and transcription system

Developing linguistic competence in italian ls through indirect feedback and digital technologies This contribution presents a didactic experience designed to achieve various objectives, and reports the results drawn from a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The aims of the two practical activities proposed to the learners, conceived and implemented taking into account the context of the course, were a) to stimulate metalinguistic reflection, b) to improve linguistic competence, c) to improve the accuracy and fluency of oral production, d) to stimulate motivation. It was also intended to test the effectiveness of indirect corrective feedback, combined with the use of digital technologies, and whether the use of both could be an effective means of engaging and stimulating autonomy in learning. In the contribution, after presenting the theoretical basis of the study, the activities carried out are detailed, examples of the feedback provided by the teacher are given, with examples of the various degrees of implicitness applied. Examples and data of the errors resolved by the learners are provided too

Space, Time, and Identity in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

    No full text
Sir Gawain and The Green Knight explores the transformation of Gawain’s identity through his quest, where time and space play crucial roles. The narrative juxtaposes brief, action-packed episodes with extended periods of stillness, emphasizing Gawain\u27s passive heroism. The circular structure of the journey symbolizes a return to the self, yet transformed through encounters with the other. The use of Paul Ricœur\u27s theory about narrative identity highlights the significance of Gawain\u27s wounds as paths to self-recognition. The comparison with David Lowery’s 2021 film adaptation reveals contemporary concerns with identity and otherness
