INTEGRARE L’INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE NELL’EDUCAZIONE LINGUISTICA: UNO STUDIO DI CASO CON CHATGPT PER LO SVILUPPO DELLE ABILITÀ DI SCRITTURA
Integrating Artificial Intelligence into language education: a case study with chatgpt for the development of writing skills
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our world, thus affecting also language education (LE). Numerous studies have explored AI’s potential in education. It is essential to examine the relationship between technology and LE from a historical perspective to navigate these changes. At the University of Parma, a research project was launched to explore how AI can be integrated into LE under the guidance of human instructors. Its two main goals were: first, to observe the interactions between AI, teachers and students during a training programme that utilized chatGPT to enhance argumentative writing skills; second, to improve students’ academic writing abilities. The study involving 95 high-school students was structured as follows: an initial pre-test, a training phase on argumentative writing, and a concluding post-test where students produced argumentative texts. Additionally, students’ engagement was assessed through a motivational questionnaire. The findings offer valuable insights into the effective integration of AI in language education, highlighting its potential to enhance both teaching practices and student learning outcomes.L’avvento dell’intelligenza artificiale (IA) sta portando a trasformazioni epocali che riguardano anche l’ambito linguistico-educativo.

Symbols of italian food and linguistic in the german urban landscape: restaurants, pizzerias, ice cream parlours and coffee shops in Treviri
The article highlights how Italian cuisine has now penetrated into German culture and language through some of its most popular symbols and products (pasta, pizza, ice cream, coffee), but also thanks to Italian restaurants (pizzerias-restaurants, ice cream parlours, coffee shops) that significantly characterize the urban landscape of German cities. In particular, the presence of such activities will be analyzed in the city of Trier, where for several years we have lived and worked as Italian MAECI Lecturer in the Department of Romanic Studies. From a theoretical point of view we refer on the research of Bagna, Barni (2006, 2007), Bagna, Machetti (2012), Vedovelli (2019) and Pizzoli (2019), as well as on the methodology used by Krefeld (2006, 2021) and Melchior (2020) to study the linguistic landscape of German and Austrian cities. Following we will examine the location and name of these Italian places and will analyze their birth and socio-cultural value in the context of the process of evolution of Italian emigration abroad. We will then observe the penetration of Italian into the German language through the most widespread Italianisms and any pseudo-Italianisms found in some of the main German dictionaries such as Duden. Finally, we will propose some didactic activities carried out during our work as Italian Lecturer in Trier, based on the study of the linguistic landscape with signs and materials (lists, menus, whiteboards) present in the city or obtained from the internet
LEXICAL CHOICES AND CHANGES IN ITALIAN DINING MENUS IN MELBOURNE
After World War II more than 270,000 Italians emigrated to Australia between 1947 and 1976 with the largest concentration settling in Melbourne. In Carlton, one of the historic neighborhoods of Italian migration to that city, a large number of stores, bars, restaurants, and pizzerias were established, particularly along Lygon Street, making this area an important reference point for the Italian-Australian community. With successive waves of migration, the concept of Italianness has changed, and today, more than 50 years after the first post-war businesses were established, the linguistic landscape has also undergone interesting changes. This study explores the lexicon used in Italian dining in Melbourne’s most famous Little Italy and surrounding areas. The menus of a hundred Italian dining and food venues were analysed. The use of English prevails alongside many well-known Italian cuisine terms that have now entered global use. Also notable is the use of Italian regionalisms, placenames and hyponyms, which, according to our hypothesis, are employed to highlight the authenticity of the product. After World War II more than 270,000 Italians emigrated to Australia between 1947 and 1976 with the largest concentration settling in Melbourne.
Mafia in Italian language landscapes in Buenos Aires: meaning production, mediation and reception of a discursive genre
The article analyzes the diffusion of signs referring to the mafias within the Italian linguistic landscapes (LL) of the city of Buenos Aires, relating this phenomenon to the scarcity of academic studies devoted to the presence and representation of Italian mafias in Argentina, despite the long and intense historical, social, and cultural relationship between the two countries. This lack of scholarly reflection has fostered the spread of stereotyped and simplified images of the mafia phenomenon, disseminated by the media and the audiovisual industry, often inspired by the cinematic model of gangsterism. The widespread presence of references to mafia culture in the public space of Buenos Aires – posters, graffiti, signs, particularly within restaurants and barbershops – is interpreted in light of research on LL, an interdisciplinary field that integrates sociology, linguistics, anthropology, and urban studies. The article proposes to further investigate the visual and symbolic dimensions of LL in order to understand how references to Italian mafias contribute, within the collective imagination, to the construction of an acceptability and normalization of the mafia phenomenon.L’articolo analizza la diffusione di segni riferiti alle mafie nei paesaggi linguistici (PL) italiani nella città di Buenos Aires, messa in relazione alla scarsità di studi accademici dedicati alla presenza e rappresentazione delle mafie italiane in Argentina, nonostante la lunga e intensa relazione storica, sociale e culturale tra i due Paesi.

Traces of war on the “talking” walls: main narrative themes in the street art of the russia-ukraine war
This paper investigates street art related to the Russo-Ukrainian war as a semiotic and narrative device that articulates counter-discourses, shapes collective memories, and transforms urban spaces into symbolic battlegrounds. Drawing on a corpus of over one hundred works collected in 2024 from digital sources, the analysis employs a socio-semiotic and multimodal framework to identify six core thematic configurations: patriotism, victims, heroism and resistance, international solidarity, peace invocations, and irony as cultural resistance. These themes are interpreted as dynamic, layered narrative structures continuously dialoguing with their socio-political contexts. The active role of the audience in meaning-making is highlighted, emphasizing how street art transcends aesthetics to emerge as a polyphonic, situated language shaping new modes of representing and experiencing conflict
The linguistic landscape of Boccaccio’s house in Certaldo
Located in Certaldo, Casa Boccaccio – the historic home of the great author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) – was established as a museum in 1825. Today, this cultural hub, dedicated to Boccaccio’s life and works, most notably the Decameron, provides information through multilingual signage in Italian, English, and other European languages. The analysis of its linguistic landscape reveals a clear dominance of Italian, with English serving as the primary secondary language; however, other major languages such as German, Spanish, and French have a notably limited presence, which is inconsistent with the demographics of its international visitors
Some reflections on the category of “italiano accademico”
This article reconstructs the history of the category italiano accademico, identifying two distinct and independent phases: during the 19th and 20th century, accademico referred to the Italian of the cultured, refined, and archaic literary tradition (as opposed to the Manzonian linguistic model); during the 21st century, italiano accademico has evolved from the analogous expression Academic English: it therefore designates Italian for academic purposes, used in university essays across various disciplines. The recent revival of the category italiano accademico is functional both to designate and disseminate the high and formal variety of Italian taught at universities and used in academic essays and writings (educational purpose), and to describe and support the Italian used in scientific communication (research and language policy purposes). For this second aim, the new label could be included into the scheme of varieties of the contemporary Italian, alongside Technical-scientific Italian, to which Academic Italian complements. The article also selects observations from intellectuals who, between the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, reflected on the language and linguistic register most suited to scientific essays: Ascoli, De Amicis, and Panzini, concluding with Calvino’s articles on antilingua published in the 1960s. Finally, the author proposes possible developments for the DIA project
