Eventfulness in English Narrative Fiction: A Diachronic Perspective
No full textThis article is a contribution to the currently expanding field of diachronic narratology, i.e. the research into possible historical and cultural changes in the practice of narration, more precisely the question of how far the various narratological categories (which as such can be considered to be universal) underlie changes in their practical application in different periods and cultures. This article focuses specifically on the narratological category of the event analyzing and comparing the practical realization of eventfulness in two periods within the history of English narrative fiction, on the one hand in the middle ages (1100-1500) and on the other in the 18th century. It can be shown that the emphasis on eventfulness in narratives varies significantly between these epochs and, also within the medieval epoch, among genres.

No full textIl concetto teorico di «narratore» come istanza mediatrice indipendente dall’autore fa la sua comparsa negli studi letterari all’inizio del Novecento, compiutamente formulato per la prima volta nel saggio di Käte Friedemann Die Rolle des Erzählers in the Epik (Il ruolo del narratore nell’epica, 1910). Il saggio, che affianca se non anticipa la riflessione di Henry James e Percy Lubbock sull’uso del punto di vista, sarà negli anni Venti tra le letture di Michail Bachtin e nel dopoguerra tra i testi di riferimento di Franz K. Stanzel, ma a dispetto del suo ruolo pionieristico non verrà tradotto in altre lingue e non accederà dunque a una circolazione internazionale. Le pagine che seguono presentano in traduzione italiana una sintesi delle principali tesi del saggio, così come vengono riassunte e puntualizzate dalla stessa Friedemann nell’articolo “Der Erzähler in der epischen Dichtung” (Il narratore nella forma epica, 1913). L’articolo tradotto è preceduto da un’introduzione che ripercorre la traiettoria intellettuale dell’autrice, cresciuta a Berlino in una famiglia di ebrei assimilati, vicina all’ambiente dei neokantiani e poi allieva a Berna di Oskar F. Walzel, della quale si perdono le tracce nella Palestina degli anni Quaranta. La riflessione di Friedemann, situata in un territorio ancora indistinto tra teoria del romanzo e narratologia, rappresenta non soltanto un tassello da collocare tra i nomi di Wilhelm Dilthey e di György Lukács, ma contribuisce a riportare in primo piano nodi teorici che sono a tutt’oggi oggetto d’indagine – primo fra tutti il problema del narratore come medium che giudica, qualità (o difetto) ineliminabile di ogni sistema di pensiero prodotto da esseri umani e non da «automi».The theoretical concept of ‘narrator’ as a mediating entity independent from the author emerged in literary studies in the early 1900s and was fully articulated for the first time in Käte Friedemann\u27s 1910 essay “Die Rolle des Erzählers in der Epik" ("The Role of the Narrator in Epic Literature”). Friedemann’s work, which parallels or even predates Henry James’ and Percy Lubbock\u27s analysis of point of view, influenced Mikhail Bakhtin in the 1920s and later Franz K. Stanzel. Despite its pioneering role, it remained untranslated, which significantly limited its impact. The following pages provide the first Italian translation of the essay’s main theses, as condensed by Friedemann herself in her 1913 article “Der Erzähler in der epischen Dichtung” (“The Narrator in Epic Form”). The translation is preceded by an introduction tracking the intellectual path of the author, who grew up in an assimilated Jewish family in Berlin, was connected to Neo-Kantian circles, studied under Oskar F. Walzel in Bern and moved to Palestine in the early 1940s. Friedemann’s work, situated between the theory of the novel and narratology, represents an important voice in early 20th century literary theory, one that should be considered in its conversation with authors such as Wilhelm Dilthey or György Lukács. Furthermore, the article contributes to bringing to the fore theoretical nodes that are still under investigation today, first and foremost the problem of the narrator as a judging medium, and as such inevitably human

ABSTRACT: This article compellingly explores the pivotal role of Zionism, tracing its journey from the early religious motivations of Puritan Protestants to the emergence of both political and religious ideologies that catalyzed the establishment of a Jewish homeland. First manifesting during the British Mandate in Palestine, this movement gained further momentum with the formation of the State of Israel, a crucial outcome of the UN Resolution 181. Moreover, the article examines the profound consequences of the 1967 War and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories, highlighting the varied responses from the United Nations. It delves into the foundational narratives of Israel, revealing a transformation from an ethnic identity to an ethno-religious nationalism, and underscores the significant role of Judaism in this evolution, along with its legal ramifications. Finally, this analysis confronts the pressing social and intellectual challenges that arise from post-Zionism, addresses critiques of the movement, and discusses the emergence and radicalization of neo-Zionism, making a strong case for understanding these complex, ambiguous, and paradoxical dynamics in today\u27s context.

No full textIn the summer of 1799 Friedrich Hölderlin worked intensively on the «Iduna»-project, a «humanistic journal» which was intended to earn him prestige and a steady income. As the difficulties increased and important authors declined his invitation to contribute, the enterprise was abandoned. Based on Hölderlin’s letters and drafts, this essay focuses on the program of «Iduna» with the aim of embedding it within the context of contemporary journals at a time of great changes in society, the editorial world, and reading interests. A comparison with the most significant literary journals of the time («Die Horen», «Propyläen», «Athenaeum») not only shows striking similarities with «Die Horen», but also helps to explain why this project was doomed to failure

No full textThe aim of this contribution is to analyse the fragment «Und der Himmel wird…» on page 40 of the Homburger Folioheft, paying particular attention to the notion of the ‘immagine socchiusa’ (slightly closed image). This expression highlights the tension between open and closed, between revealed and veiled, within Hölderlin’s work. The fragment is not written with ink but directly engraved on the paper. This technique invites us to reflect on the choice of medium and material. Furthermore, the theme of the sky, mentioned on page 40, connects the notion of the open with the dimension of the divine. This becomes represented as an invisible being seeking to manifest itself. The influence of Heinse will also be examined, as it is fundamental for understanding the connection between sign, painting, and the divine

Fictile votive statuines of Eros from the Sanctuary of Fondo Patturelli: some considerations
No full textFondo Patturelli inserisce la città di Capua tra quei complessi santuariali nei quali l’enorme quantità di patrimonio votivo recuperato, oltre diecimila pezzi, permette di conoscere e ricostruire, non senza difficoltà, il panorama religioso e votivo di questa area sacra strettamente connessa alla vita religiosa, sociale e territoriale della comunità campana. All’interno del repertorio di eccezionale consistenza numerica e varietà tipologica delle molteplici raffigurazioni di divinità che affiancano nel tempo la dea maternale e curotrofica dell’età arcaica, compare anche Eros: un soggetto apparentemente secondario, diffuso tra III e II sec. a.C., la cui quantità di attestazioni chiama in causa un numero considerevole di testimonianze, anche al di fuori del territorio campano, tale da rendere necessario un suo studio ai fini di una delineazione il più completa possibile della sua figura. Il quadro generale e il contesto, anche in relazione ad altre categorie fittili presenti all’interno del Fondo Patturelli, suggeriscono la sua vocazione specifica e sembrano confermarne il ruolo come intimamente connesso alla protezione biologica e sociale della comunità, soprattutto femminile, a garanzia di una fondamentale continuità.Fondo Patturelli places the city of Capua among those sanctuary complexes in which the enormous quantity of votive heritage collected, over ten thousand pieces, allows us to know and reconstruct, not without difficulty, the religious and votive panorama of this sacred area closely connected to the religious, social and territorial life of the Campania community. The god Eros appears inside the repertoire of exceptional numerical consistency and typological variety of the multiple representations of divinities that over time flank the maternal and curotrophic goddess of the archaic age. Apparently, Eros plays a secondary role, widespread between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, but the quantity of attestations bringing a considerable number of testimonies, even outside the Campania region, requires a specific study of this god with the purpose of delineating his figure in the most complete way. The general context, also in relation to other clay categories present in the Fondo Patturelli, suggests its specific vocation and seems to confirm its role as intimately connected to the biological and social protection of the community, especially women, to guarantee a fundamental continuity
