O tempora, o mores: Theocritus’ Idyll 16 Between Poetic Repertoire and ‘New’ Courtly Poetry
In Theocritus’ idyll 16 (Graces or Hiero) the previous literary tradition is widely used and it becomes also explicit term of comparison for a reflection about the value of poetry and its development over time (vv. 34-57). Theocritus, who focuses on the praise function of poetry, seems to have in mind above all choral lyric poets as Simonides, Pindar and Bacchylides. Nevertheless, he changes the way he deals with these literary models in the course of the idyll. Indeed, in the first part of the poem, where despair and condemnation are the prevailing attitudes, the topoi of the eulogistic works are precisely overturned, in order to highlight the impossibility to replicate in the contemporary age the same social factors thanks to which the traditional poetic repertoire was formed. On the contrary, in the second part of the idyll, where the narrator seems finally to find Hiero II as a possible patron to praise, the characteristic motifs of the laudatory works are used in a ‘conservative’ way. The overall outcome is not only a vivid picture of the intellectual’s condition in the Hellenistic age, but also a complex operation of closeness to and distance from the encomiastic models of the past
Achille Torelli’s Poetry Between ‘Popular Songs’ and Romantic Philhellenism
The essay aims to trace the presence of elements of the philhellenic literature repertoire that spread during the nineteenth century (not only in the works of authors such as Nievo, Cantù, Tommaseo, and Fauriel), in Achille Torelli’s poetry (1841-1922), playwright, novelist and Neapolitan poet of arbëreshë origin. The research will take into consideration the Albanian popular traditions included in the collection of poems Schegge (1878), reflecting on the double purpose of the rewriting activity: as a contribution to the transmission of that people’s traditions, and also as an exercise in literary erudition. Through the reading of Torelli’s lyrics, the essay aims to document the reworking of the typical elements of the traditional repertoire through the act of rewriting examined in its various forms, using as a case study the verses of a lyric considered ‘the masterpiece’ of Albanian legends, also for its central nucleus, linking it to a vast European tradition that blends popular imagination with the fairy tale: Costanzo’s faith. This legend – placing at the centre the virtue of the knight who does not break his oath even after his death, getting on the back of his horse and accomplishing his task before disappearing definitively from earthly life – is intertwined with the romantic scenario of Bürger’s Lenore and with the Hellenic tradition. In particular, such a tradition is revived both by Fauriel who inserts the lyric under the title Le voyage nocturne in his Chants populaires, and by Tommaseo who brings it back among his Canti Greci titling it The Spectre, up to Torelli’s work who, in presenting as sources the translations of Girolamo de Rada or the anthology of De Grazia, does not hide his work of rewriting full of interconnections between the various literary texts.

In this talk, Elvira Mujčić - born in Loznica, Serbia, and successively moved to Srebrenica, Bosnia, from which she fled in 1992 due to the war, first to Croatia and then to Italy, in Rome, where she currently lives - reflects on her experience as a multilingual and why she chose to write her novels (including La lingua di Ana. Chi sei quando perdi radici e parole?) in Italian and not in her mother tongue
INTENSIFIERS IN ITALIAN IN TRANSIT: TRACING BIOGRAPHICAL EXPERIENCES THROUGH LANGUAGE PRACTICES
This paper explores strategies of morphological/lexical intensification in Italian-based multilingual practices I label ‘Italian in Transit’ (IiT). IiT is informally acquired by plurilingual migrants and refugees in Italy and occasionally reactivated after onward migration. This study draws on 23 interviews with IiT speakers from sub-Saharan West Africa working as street vendors in a Berlin park. After outlining the intensifiers used in my corpus, I focus on two largely interchangeable forms in Italian: molto and tanto ‘very/much/many’. In reverse to their distribution across all registers in reference corpora for spoken Italian, tanto significantly outnumbers molto in my data (though their part-of-speech distribution matches that of the target language). This predominance reflects the frequency patterns of the two intensifiers in informal spoken registers only. Thus, it may be a linguistic trace of the input participants were mainly exposed to in Italy and their biographical experiences. In contrast, other sociolinguistic factors, like the length of stay in Italy or Germany, show no decisive impact. The paper also examines the occasional use of troppo ‘too much/many’ to convey high intensity rather than excess. IiT partly shares this feature with Italian youth varieties, colloquial French, and some Italian-based contact varieties developed outside Italy. Despite considerable interspeaker variation, troppo usually occurs in re-elaborative sequences and is often preceded by strategic pauses. Its overextension – also observed in non-French-speaking participants – is therefore linked to its discourse-pragmatic and prosodic salience.
Italian in the linguistic landscape of Moscow
This article presents an interpretation of the space and role of Italian language in today’s Moscow static Linguistic Landscape (LL). The potential effects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, whose consequences may have affected the presence of the Italian language into the Russian capital, are taken into account. In 2019, a doctoral research investigated the perception of the presence of Italian in the static LL of the city, by university students of Italian as second or third FL. The study aimed at clarifying whether Italian was perceived as a stable and non-distinctive element in the multilingual and intercultural context of the city. The results seem to confirm that, despite the deterioration of the official relationships between Italy and the Russian Federation, the presence of the Italian in the LL of Moscow does not appear significantly compromised.

Speed, Rhythm and Language in Niccolò Ammaniti’s Che la festa cominci and Jhumpa Lahiri’s In altre parole
In his essay La letteratura circostante Simonetti identifies in speed the predominant formal aspect of contemporary Italian novel. A case in point is Ammaniti’s Che la festa cominci, which is strongly influenced by the rhythm of Hollywoodian film editing, translating movie’s structure in the novel through the parataxis and the plot. The paper wants to study the rhythm of Ammaniti’s narration through one of the most famous screenplay manuals: Snyder’s Save the Cat. The paper aims to compare this type of narration with Lahiri’s In altre parole. This autobiographical translingual novel narrates the encounter and learning path with Italian language of the protagonist /narrator. We intend to question the links between an Italian author who searches his narrative models in the Hollywood cinema, repudiating the Italian literary tradition, and a translingual writer who fulfills the opposite path: she abandons American form and language to write in a minor literature
