L’ITALIANO ATTRAVERSO LA STAMPA IN CANADA: IL CASO DEL «PROGRESSO ITALO-CANADESE» (1929-1932)

    No full text
Italian language in Canada: the case of the Progresso Italo-Canadese periodical (1929-1932) The paper highlights some aspects of the language of Progresso Italo-Canadese, an Italian-language periodical published in Toronto between the two World Wars and preserved at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) in Ottawa. The analysis looks at page 3 (local news) of the newspaper in the first six months of publication, studying journalistic and linguistic aspects. The analysis highlights the specificities of the language used in that context – the Italian community of Toronto – and in that moment, in which the press felt the influence of language and themes conveyed by the fascist regime. While on the one hand, constructs that refer to the language of the newspapers of the time – and earlier periods – in Italy are highlighted, on the other hand, constructs borrowed from the English language are also noted.   &nbsp

Italian and local varieties at school: teaching experiences for an integrated vertical curriculum from an ecolinguistic perspective   National guidelines and policies for the valorisation and protection of linguistic minorities and the heritage of local varieties call on schools to explore new educational pathways that integrate multilingual teaching (Italian, other languages and local varieties), in order to promote the students’ cultural and social competence, the development of their identity through the contact with linguistic and cultural diversity and democratic participation. This paper presents two experiences of integrated language teaching through the valorisation of local varieties for a vertical curriculum based on an ecolinguistic perspective, carried out in primary and secondary school classes of schools from an area near Palermo. In a primary school (class III), composed of Italian speakers with low competence in the local variety, the study of text types in Italian and the search for similar texts in Sicilian, carried out with the involvement of Sicilian-speaking grandparents, improved text analysis and communication skills and widened intergenerational language spaces. At secondary level, the students’ multilingual resources on Italian and the local variety allowed the discovery of the onomastic local repertoire and the creation of glossaries; the contrastive analysis activated metalinguistic processes and improved skills in dealing with different registers.Italian and local varieties at school: teaching experiences for an integrated vertical curriculum from an ecolinguistic perspective   National guidelines and policies for the valorisation and protection of linguistic minorities and the heritage of local varieties call on schools to explore new educational pathways that integrate multilingual teaching (Italian, other languages and local varieties), in order to promote the students’ cultural and social competence, the development of their identity through the contact with linguistic and cultural diversity and democratic participation.

Traces of popular italian in contemporary speech  Within the framework of the research on popular Italian, little attention has been paid to its oral dimension. This paper presents the results of a corpus-based research, which aims to verify whether popular Italian is present, as a spoken variety, in the variational architecture of contemporary Italian. The analysis is based on the ParlaTO corpus and considers a set of phenomena as diagnostic traits of IP. Such traits will be related to various socio-cultural parameters (age, education, profession). The data analysis will shed some light on one of the most debated problems about popular Italian: whether, nowadays, it is still a vital language variety

LA VARIAZIONE DIASTRATICA A NAPOLI TRA RAPPRESENTAZIONE D’AUTORE ED ESECUZIONE ATTORIALE: IL CASO DELLA SERIE TV “LA VITA BUGIARDA DEGLI ADULTI”

    No full text
Diastratic variation in Naples between authorial representation and actorly performance: the case of the tv series La vita bugiarda degli adulti This paper analyzes the representation of dialectal speech in the television series La vita bugiarda degli adulti by Edoardo De Angelis. The “silent language”, which on Elena Ferrante’s written page can only be “imagined”, becomes in the series concrete and alive to give back to the viewer the cross-section of a society in which plebeians and bourgeoisie meet mainly on the terrain of verbal violence and dysphemic usages. However, the linguistic realism of the staging suffers from certain uncertainties in the performance of the actors, which manifest themselves mainly on the level of phonetics, but also through morphological and lexical clues or rather artificial forms of expression. &nbsp

«RINCHIUSO NEL CARCERE DEL POPOLO». I COMUNICATI DELLE BR DURANTE IL SEQUESTRO SOSSI DA UNA PROSPETTIVA LINGUISTICA

    No full text
“Rinchiuso nel carcere del popolo”. the BR bulletins during the Sossi kidnapping from a linguistic perspective This paper aims to analyze the bulletins released by the Red Brigades during the kidnapping of the Italian judge Mario Sossi, occurred in 1974. Texts will be analyzed by the help of some semi-automatic tools useful for the tokenization and for the detection of lexical peculiarities of this corpus, specifically about the Italian Vocabolario di Base. Moreover, a qualitative exploration will follow the quantitative one. In particular, qualitative analysis will help to focus the lexicon used in this corpus in comparison with the one used in other texts belonging to the RB’s experience. An insight about keywords and typical multi-word expressions will be available, too. The goal of this paper is to properly collocate the Sossi’s kidnapping’s bulletins along the linguistic experience of Red Brigades, in order to detect their importance as test bench for the further “RB style”, which will be very famous in the second half of 1970s.&nbsp

Pace and Space in Naturalist and Realist Novel: The Case of Germinal

    No full text
This study examines the temporal and spatial qualities associated with realist and naturalist novels in general and with Émile Zola’s Germinal in particular. It is based on the assumption that the spatial-temporal qualities of both realist and naturalist genres are fundamentally determined by the pragmatic aspects of literary realism and naturalism, as outlined by early realist thinkers and writers such as Guy de Maupassant, George Eliot, Gustav Flaubert, the de Goncourt brothers, Henry James, Émile Zola, and others. The study aims to provide a deeper understanding of spatial-temporal qualities and the ways in which they contribute to the genre’s distinctive style and impact. By examining these qualities in detail, the paper sheds light on the vital role that naturalist novels play in reflecting and shaping our understanding of the world. The study uses Émile Zola’s Germinal (1885) as a primary referential framework to exemplify the theoretical findings

Moments, Rhythms, and Ambivalences in Gaston Bachelard’s Theory of Literary Imagination

This contribution aims to analyze Bachelard’s theory of moment and rhythm from a literary theory perspective. Firstly, we will examine the fundamental principles of Bachelardian reflection on temporality in La dialectique de la durée (1936). Secondly, we will analyze the Bachelardian essay “Instant poétique et instant métaphisique” (1939). Subsequently, we will observe the relevance of certain aspects of the French philosopher’s theory of moment and rhythm for his theory of literary imagination in the 1940s. In the conclusion, we will draw a comparison between Bachelard’s theory of poetic moment and rhythm and formalist, structuralist and post-structuralist thought. This contribution aims to analyze Bachelard’s theory of moment and rhythm from a literary theory perspective. Lo spazio del disgusto. Materialità e subalternità in Carolina Maria De Jesus

    No full text
The concept of disgust is generally associated with the sensorial sphere of our body and is identified with a feeling of instinctive repulsion towards something that causes discom- fort. It has different meanings that emphasize its physical, ethical and social component. According to Darwin, disgust is one of the six primary sensations as it generates repul- sion, but for repulsion to occur as an immediate reaction, it must be re-symbolized through an interpretative action that occurs cognitively. Paraphrasing W. I. Miller (1997), disgust contributes to structure the world through the power of images and to internalize moral, collective and political attitudes. In this perspective, disgust is configured as a social catalyst, capable of creating isolated urban spaces of exclusion and marginality. In the novel Quarto de Despejo (1960) Carolina Maria de Jesus represents the existential conditions of a woman on the margins of society in a favela on the outskirts of São Paulo where she is forced to sell garbage to survive. The space of the favela is configured as a place of the marginalized, unwanted, victim of disgust by society. In the same way Caro- lina feels aversion towards São Paulo, which she defines as a «sick city», a symbol of exploitation, discrimination and violence. In the novel the physical element of garbage plays an important role and induces the protagonist to an act of internalization with which she projects the negative qualities of waste onto herself, in this way, she becomes the object and subject of disgust. Thus represented, disgust becomes a threat to one’s dignity, to the sense of belonging to a specific or abstract group, that is, to humanity. The language of the novel takes on forms of disgust in the representations of objects and waste that shape the surrounding space, which has now also become a theater of the repugnant. Car- olina Maria De Jesus more or less consciously consolidates her relationship with the ex- cluding space in which she moves by assuming the characteristics of the social marginalized. The concept of disgust is generally associated with the sensorial sphere of our body and is identified with a feeling of instinctive repulsion towards something that causes discom- fort.

Practical implications of the Constitutional Court ruling no. 135/2024 which, while not contradicting itself, has (in fact) extended the right of access to medically assisted death SUMMARY: Starting from the Constitutional Court ruling no. 134/2024, the Author addresses the practical implications in the care relationship. After highlighting that the Court has confirmed, in this new ruling, the area of non-punishability of assisted suicide defined by the previous constitutional jurisprudence, he goes into the merits of which are the life-sustaining treatments (TSV) for which there is no definition of either a normative or scientific nature. He then underlines how the Constitutional Court has extensively expanded the perimeter of TSV, thus widening the group of people who can legitimately access medically assisted death. Even if, in order to integrate the principles established by the Constitutional Court ruling no. 242/2019, a whole series of other conditions must be verified, among all the circumstance that their interruption or their non-starting determines the death of the patient in a short period of time. He concludes by observing that compliance with this new limit, due to its very generality, could be the source of different interpretations and unequal treatment, sharing the need for the entire matter to finally be regulated in an organic manner by the Italian Parliament as the Constitutional Court has repeatedly recommended. SOMMARIO: 1. Introduzione - 2. - 4. Conclusioni
