Gender Discrimination In Italian Academia within Logic and Philosophy of Science
This feature reports on the output of the World Café table on Gender Discrimination in Italian Academia which took place at first meeting of the Milano Logic and Philosophy of Science Network (12 March 2025).
Epistemology, Reasoning, and Logic
This feature reports on the Epistemology, Reasoning, and Logic session of the first Milan Logic and Philosophy of Science Network workshop (12th March 2025). The session brought together six contributions addressing diverse aspects of scientific reasoning: the psychology of extreme beliefs, analogical reasoning in contemporary physics, joint commitment across species, the epistemology of pseudoscience and disinformation, logical reasoning with data, and modal logic for truth-maker semantics
Pelagic seabirds in coastal waters of the Western Ligurian Sea: occurrence and seasonality
Seabirds are an heterogeneous group of birds that, due to their behaviour and at-sea distribution, remain difficult to study when compared to other species. In the Liguro-Provençal basin (Mediterranean Sea), the fragmentary information of presence and number of individuals available fails to capture the variability of occurrence of these species year-round and at smaller regional scales. This study aimed to fill these gaps in seabirds’ presence and phenology for the coastal Western Ligurian Sea. Data were collected opportunistically at sea, year-round, from June 2018 to May 2022. 274 surveys were conducted, totalling 1,522.91 hours of search time year-round: 12 species of seabirds, excluding seagulls, cormorants, shags, and landbirds, were identified. Observations of species and group size were collected to estimate cumulative seasonal encounter rates (ER) for all species and seasonal ERs for the most common taxa. Spring and autumn had the highest ER cumulative for all species, as these are migratory periods for multiple species. These are also periods of the highest presence of the most sighted species - Yelkouan Puffinus yelkouan and Scopoli’s Shearwaters Calonectris diomedea - at French breeding colonies. Species also observed in large numbers were the Northern Gannet Morus bassanus and the Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis, whose sightings matched their migratory phenology. Other northern breeding species, such as Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica, and more rare species like skua spp. were also recorded. The presence of migratory species year-round indicates the region is an important non-breeding and foraging ground for individuals not taking part in the pre-breeding migrations and for shearwaters breeding in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This study highlights the importance of the Western Ligurian Sea for pelagic seabird species, emphasizing the need for targeted conservation actions to enhance their protection
Il design organizzativo come metadesign
Contemporary ecological crises, technological transitions, and global systemic tensions position organizational design as a strategic field for rethinking the foundations of design. This article conceptualizes organizational design as metadesign, understood as the design of the very conditions for design: a reflective practice that extends beyond the production of structures or processes to shape the epistemic, relational, and symbolic frameworks that enable all other design activities.Building on theoretical references ranging from second-order cybernetics to transformative approaches inspired by Teal models and sociocracy, the paper introduces the organizational compass, an operational framework developed within Ecosistemica. Structured around three dimensions (Why, How, What) and six operational domains (structure, decision-making, participation, information flows, resource distribution, and feedback cycles), the framework supports organizations in reflecting on, learning from, and redefining their practices in a coherent, situated, and participatory manner.Combining co-design, participant observation, and speculative design, the compass functions as an enabling device for deep organizational transformation. More broadly, the contribution situates organizational design within the debate on the future of organizations as cultural infrastructures that generate worldviews, power relations, and shared meanings. In this perspective, organizational design, conceived as the design of design, emerges as a crucial lever for fostering new forms of coexistence that are more equitable, reflective, and generative
The University of Milan in Angera (Lake Maggiore - Italy): giving a new life to the Angera Archive forty years after the end of the archaeological excavations
The paper examines the significant role played by the University of Milan in archaeological investigations carried out in Angera (Lake Maggiore - Italy) between 1975 and 1986, as well as its scientific contribution to the establishment of the Civic Archaeological Museum. Nearly forty years after the end of the excavations, this paper presents a new project aimed at reorganizing, digitizing, and promoting the archive record related to these archaeological investigations housed at the Archaeology Section of the Department of Cultural and Environmental Heritage at the University of Milan
Abelard\u27s Criticism of Ecclesiastical Legislation. New Researches and Perspectives of Research
In his Collationes (ca. 1136), Peter Abelard entrusts to the philosopher two severe criticisms concerning first the impressive bulk of decretals uninterruptedly issued by the popes and secondarily the custom of conceding dispensations that – he assumes – make lecit what before was illegal and viceversa, so infringing the lex naturae. If the first argument is understable and really documented, is more difficult to explain the second one. One can suppose that it was suggested by Abelard’s indignation against the expulsion of Eloisa and her sisters away from the monastery of Argenteuil, declared by the synod of St. Germain-des-Prés (1129). A decision inspired and directed by Suger, powerful abbot of St. Denis, seemingly relying on documents probably false, nevertheless credited by the members of the religious assembly, so neglecting the ordinary canon law that granted, by time, the good reasons of the nuns.

Mathematics to Cope with the World: A Pragmatist Reading of Quine and Rorty
This article examines the divergent yet converging perspectives of W.V.O. Quine and Richard Rorty on the ontology of mathematics. While Quine grounds mathematical entities in the indispensability of abstract objects for scientific theories, Rorty rejects representationalist commitments, constructing mathematics as a contingent linguistic practice. The study reconstructs Quine’s criterion of ontological commitment, his holistic epistemology, and his treatment of mathematics as an indispensable component of the web of belief, contrasting them with Rorty’s anti-foundationalist account of mathematics as a pragmatic tool devoid of ontological import. The analysis emphasizes their respective views on the functional role of mathematics, highlighting a shared pragmatist orientation that, beneath their surface disagreement, converges in situating mathematics as a practice for coping with and structuring experience rather than as a reflection of a pre-given reality. The article argues that their apparent opposition between realism and anti-realism masks a deeper convergence: both conceive mathematics as a constructed and adaptable device for generating conceptual possibilities and enabling action.
Husserl on the Concept of Anzahl: Three Ways Not to Conceive it
This article addresses the concept of Anzahl (cardinal number) as understood by the early Husserl, who made it the foundation of his Philosophy of Arithmetic (1891). The discussion is developed through a comparative approach: after retracing the key features of the characterization of the cardinal number presented in that work, the paper examines the criticisms Husserl directs at three alternative theories – two of which are found within the Philosophy of Arithmetic itself, and one is presented in a lecture given in 1901. These comparisons provide an opportunity to appreciate the specificity of certain aspects of Husserl’s philosophy of mathematics, which is centered on the acts performed by the subject. Moreover, they offer valuable insights for re-examining two recurring themes in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology (1954): the problematic relationship between mathematical ideality and the Lebenswelt, and the preference for a mathematical practice centered on a symbolic mode of thought.
