The dietary acid load was associated with metabolic syndrome and mental health among obese college studentsBackground: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has been increasing every year in the young population. The western diet is one of the causes that makes excess acid in the body called a dietary acid load. On the other hand, the high dietary acid load was associated with decreased mental health status. Objective: To examine the association between dietary acid load and the risk of metabolic syndrome and mental health. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 115 female students in Semarang aged 18-22 years. The dietary acid load was evaluated through a potential renal acid load (PRAL), the risk score for metabolic syndrome was calculated by Metabolic syndrome risk score. Mental health status was assessed through levels of self-esteem and levels of anxiety. The level of self-esteem was measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale questionnaire, while the level of anxiety was measured by the State Anxiety Inventory questionnaire. Multiple linear regression models with adjustment for a potential cofounding variable were used to evaluate the association between dietary acid load with metabolic syndrome scores, self-esteem scores, and anxiety scores. Results: The mean PRAL score was 6.11 ± 9.72 mEq/day indicated the intake of the subjects was the dietary acid load. 13% of subjects had metabolic syndrome, and 87% had a pre-metabolic syndrome. 36.5% of the subjects have low self-esteem scores. The anxiety level score calculation shows that 59.1% of the subjects are at high risk of anxiety. Pearson test showed that PRAL scores were correlated with anxiety scores (r=0,669; p<0,001). The linear regression test showed that PRAL scores were correlated with metabolic syndrome scores (β=0.899; p<0.001) and self-esteem scores (β =-0.069; p=0.047).Conclusions: High dietary acid load may be a risk factor related to the development of metabolic disorders and decreased mental health status in females with obesity

Protein intake, zinc intake, and zinc deficiency in underweight female students attending Islamic Boarding School in IndonesiaBackground: One of the nutritional issues in Indonesia is underweight. Groups of teenage girls tend to have underweight especially female students (santriwati) who live far from their parents. It happens due to a lack of macronutrients and micronutrients, zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiency impacts are reproductive disorders, stunted growth, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Objective: Analyzing the differences in zinc levels, protein, and zinc intakes between female students with underweight and normal nutritional status. Methods: An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design in Askhabul Kahfi Islamic Boarding School with 24 underweight female students selected by consecutive sampling and 24 normal nutritional status female students were selected by matching techniques based on age. Data included nutritional status assessed by BMI for age z-score, protein and zinc intakes assessed by Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire, and zinc levels were tested using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The data analyses used Mann-Whitney test. Results: Underweight female students had lower average protein intake than normal nutritional status female students (52.20±25.06 and 75.52±23.19 grams) as well as zinc intake (4.63±1.22 and 7.51±1.94 grams). Protein and zinc intake were significantly different, but the two groups did not differ in zinc levels. All subjects had a normal zinc level of 100%. Conclusions: There was a difference in protein and zinc intake between underweight and normal nutritional female students (p<0.001), while the zinc levels were not found any differences (p=0.773)

Social, economic factors, and utilization of posyandu towards stunting among toddlers of poor families of PKH recipients in PalembangBackground: Stunting is a nutritional problem caused by chronic malnutrition. Stunting can result in decreased concentration, memory damage, decreased learning, and school performance, decreased cognitive function, impaired motor development, and has a long-term impact on reducing productivity, thus inhibiting economic growth and causing intergenerational poverty. Stunting can be influenced by social, economic, and access to health services factors. Objective: To analyze the correlation of social, economic, and utilization of integrated services post (pos pelayanan terpadu/posyandu) with the incidence of stunting of under-fives in poor families in Palembang. Methods: This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design in March-April 2019. The population was toddlers aged 24-59 months from poor families in Palembang, with the criteria receiving the cash transfer program from the Indonesian Government, called Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH). Samples were 100 people were chosen by proportional sampling. Data were analyzed by using the Chi-Square test and regression logistic test. Results: The proportion of stunting among toddlers in poor families of PKH recipients in Palembang was 29%. Multiple logistic regression test shows 4 (four) independent variables have a significant correlation to the incidence of stunting simultaneously. Those variable are maternal education (p=0.003, OR=7.278, 95% CI: 1.928-27.474), birth order (p=0.013, OR=0.144, 95% CI: 0.031-0.664), number of family members (p=0.013, OR=10.809, 95% CI:  1.639-71.278),irregular utilization of Posyandu (p=0.041, OR=3.524, 95% CI:1.055-11.768), and never using Posyandu (p=0.019, OR=5.282, 95% CI: 1.313-21.239). Low maternal education, huge family members (more than 4), irregularly and never use Posyandu increase risk of stunting 7.2 times, 10.8 times, 3.5, and 5.2 times, otherwise first or second birth order was a protective factor of stunting. Conclusions: Maternal education and utilization of Posyandu are protective factors, meanwhile huge family members (more than 4) and third or more birth order can increase stunting incidence among toddlers of poor families of PKH recipients
