    Determinant of stunting in children 2-3 aged years in Ciamis District West Java ProvinceBackground: The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is still high (at 37,2%), while in the province of West Java is at 35,8%. Household food security is one of the indirect causes of the nutritional problems. Aspects of food security in the form of food availability and access to food are related in a household that affects the aspect of the level of food consumption in every household or individual that is not being met. Objective: The study aims to analyze whether household food security was the determinant of stunting in children aged 2-3 years in Ciamis Districts. Methods: This was an observational study with a case-control design. Subjects in this research are households. Information from a total of 349 households, i.e. 168 had stunted and 181 without stunted children, were collected. Respondents consisted of mothers, fathers, and children aged 2-3 years in Ciamis District. Subjects were selected using quota sampling. Data were analyzed using t-test and logistic regression. Results: Food availability, food access, energy, and protein consumption were not associated with stunting (p>0,05). There were significant differences between the average height (Z-score) of children based on the father's height, the mother's height, and the mother's education level (p 0,05). Conclusion: This study observed that household food security was not the determinant of stunting. After controlling for potential confounders, the children's heights were independently associated with parental heights and maternal education

    Nutrition education with animated media to improve hemoglobin levels and nutritional intake of anemic pregnant womenBackground: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in 2018 increased compared to 2013. Anemic pregnant women need to receive nutrition education. Nutrition education requires media and various studies that report the success of nutrition education using various media. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of animated media nutrition education on improving hemoglobin and nutrient intake of anemic pregnant women. Methods: The study was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest one-group design on 31 anemic pregnant women. Nutrition education media, namely animated videos, were prepared based on interviews with cadres and pregnant women. Hemoglobin levels, knowledge, attitudes, iron tablet consumption compliance, and nutrient intake were measured before and after being given animated media nutrition education. Results: The mean hemoglobin level of pregnant women after the intervention increased by 1.75 g/dl; knowledge score 3.52; behavior score 4.06; iron tablet consumption 28 grains; energy intake 574.62 Kcal; protein intake 19.46 g; vitamin C intake 25.98 mg; and iron intake 3.17 mg. Conclusion: Nutrition education intervention using animated video can improve hemoglobin level, knowledge, attitude, iron tablet consumption, and nutritional intake of pregnant women

    Nutritional status, nutrient density, and dietary diversity of children under five during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangli Regency, BaliBackground: Stunting in children caused the lack of nutritionally balanced food intake in the first two years of life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the fulfillment of balanced nutrition for children must still be considered to maintain body resistance to avoid COVID-19 infection.Objective: This study was conducted to find out the nutritional status of children and also the knowledge and attitudes of mothers regarding the practice of balanced nutrition based on local food in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 202 children aged 23-59 months located in Susut District, Bangli Regency, Bali Province. Data collection includes anthropometric measurements and food recall. Characteristics, knowledge, and attitudes of mothers were conducted by interview using a questionnaire. Results: The nutritional status of subjects showed that the average weight for height z-score (WHZ) was 0.29 ± 1.37, height for age z-score (HAZ) was 0.56 ± 2.38, and weight for age z-score (WAZ) which is -1.18 ± 2.03. The average density of energy intake in the adequate (1.66±0.456), as well as protein density (4.12±0.884 g/100 calories), vitamin B12 (0.225±0.457 mg/100 kcal), and vitamin A (71.7 ±104.6 mg/100 kcal). The majority (61.9%) of subjects consumed less than five food groups in the last 24 hours. The average knowledge of respondents is 69.5±15.3, which is 35.1% in well nutrition knowledge, while most respondent’s attitude has in the good category. Conclusions: Overall children are in normal nutritional status, but it is necessary to attention to the density of vitamins and minerals which are still low, and the lack of food diversity. Suggestion to increase education on balanced nutrition practices based on local food to mothers and families so that they can help grow and also maintain children's health during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Dietary pattern and anemia with the occurrence of LBW babies: Indonesian Life Family Survey (IFLS 5)Background: Nutritional problems occur throughout the human life cycle. Maternal, infant, and neonatal mortality rates are critical national growth indicators. The most common cause of death in neonates is babies with low birth weight (LBW). Objective: This study examines the association between diet, anemia, and the incidence of LBW in Indonesia using the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 5. Methods: This observational study used IFLS 5 secondary data. The study population is women of reproductive age (15-49 years), married, had their last child born alive, and their weight weighed. The independent variables were diet and anemia, while the dependent was LBW. Effect modifiers were age, parity, education, employment, pregnancy complications, consumption of iron tablets, and residence. Results: The total number of respondents was 2,368, with an LBW incidence of 8.7%. The percentage of non-diverse diets is 72.3%, more than diverse diets. There was a significant relationship between diverse dietary patterns and LBW. A less varied diet provides a 1.32 more substantial risk of giving birth to an LBW baby compared to mothers with a diverse diet. However, there was no relationship between anemia and LBW. Further analysis showed two food groups significantly associated with LBW: nuts and meat and fish. Conclusions: A diverse diet lowers the risk of LBW but is not significantly related. Efforts are needed to improve community nutrition through a varied and balanced diet. Social factors related to LBW are mothers' education and employment

    Nutrition assistance for pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency and anemia to increase nutritional intakeBackground: Nutrition assistance for pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency (CED) with family or community empowerment strategies and community participation is necessary to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women and babies during the 1000 first days of life.Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of assisting pregnant women with CED on changes in nutrition intake in Bengkulu and Bandar Lampung City.Methods: The research design used a quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized control group pre and post-test design. The research was conducted in Bengkulu and Bandar Lampung city. A sample of 120 pregnant women with CED and anemia, consisting of 60 intervention groups and 60 control groups selected by purposive sampling. The intervention group received assistance from pregnant women by health cadres using nutrition education media from the second trimester of pregnancy to the mother before delivery for 3 months. Cadres carry out health promotion, monitor the nutritional status of pregnant women, and assist in supplementary feeding of pregnant women and Fe tablets. The control group received standard services from the puskesmas/posyandu without assistance from cadres. Nutrition intake includes intake of carbohydrates, protein, fat, iron, and calcium. Changes in nutritional intake before and after training were analyzed using a statistical paired t-test. Differences in nutritional intake between the intervention and control groups using independent t-test.Results: Nutrition assistance for pregnant women with CED and anemia was effective in improving the intake of carbohydrates, protein, fat, Fe, and calcium. There was an increase in the average intake of carbohydrates, protein, fat, Fe, and calcium in Bengkulu and Bandar Lampung City.Conclusions: Nutrition assistance for pregnant women with CED and anemia is effective in increasing nutrition intake

    Effect of high-protein milk on lipid profiles and blood glucose in young adult

    Background: High-protein milk is a complex food that contains several potentially bioactive compounds that might affect blood glucose and cholesterol. Epidemiological data indicate that high-protein milk consumption is associated with a decrease in the prevalence of metabolic disorders or maintaining metabolic health.Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of high-protein milk on cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose.Methods: This study used an experimental trial with the designed randomized controlled trial. The subjects were divided into two groups: 24 subjects in the treatment group and 23 subjects in the control group. The treatment group was given high-protein milk and nutritional education for 90 days. The control groups were given nutritional education.Results: The results showed that blood glucose did not have a significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05), but it decreased 1.75±3.6 mg/dl after high-protein milk intervention. Blood cholesterol and LDL showed significant differences between the two groups (p0.05).Conclusion: Intervention of high-protein milk could significantly reduce cholesterol and LDL levels and reduce blood glucose after 90 days of intervention in the young adult age group. High-protein milk can be a recommendation to prevent metabolic syndrome

    Background: COVID-19 pandemic brings a higher risk of malnutrition because of the economic crisis that emphasizes the importance of child nutritional status monitoring during the pandemic. However, nutrition-related care in health care faces several challenges to the social limitation policy for preventing virus spreading. Challenges include delivery, coordination, and follow-up methods. In addition, the mothers' perception concerning the importance of nutritional status monitoring also becomes the determinant of their participation.Objectives: This research aimed to explore the implementation method, challenges, and mothers' perception of the children's nutritional status monitoring process during a pandemic through “posyandu” by applying health protocols.Methods: This research is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data were collected using in-depth interviews. The respondents in this study were mothers of a child aged 0-5 years who lived in Yogyakarta and participated actively in Posyandu. Data triangulation was applied by interviewing the cadres of posyandu and nutritionists in Health Care or Office in Yogyakarta. Results: The posyandu delivered the measurements by adjusting the method with an invitation divided into several measurement sessions or a door-to-door system to minimize crowd. The obstacles faced were the need to procure medical devices and ensure the validity of the data obtained. Conclusions: Child nutritional status monitoring during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted by applying COVID-19 safety protocols according to the recommendations of the Indonesian Ministry of Health. There should be sufficient support from stakeholders to help posyandu overcome the obstacles: the procurement of medical equipment to meet the health protocol requirements. In addition, there is a need to improve parents' skills in measuring child anthropometric measurements through education and guidelines

    Responsive feeding ibu dan asupan makan anak stunting usia 2-5 tahun

    Maternal responsive feeding and food intake of 2-5 years old stunted childrenBackground: Inadequate food intake is one of the stunting determinants in children. Responsive feeding is related to children's food intake.Objective: This study aimed to determine the relation between maternal responsive feeding and food intake of stunting children aged 2-5 years.Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study with 92 mothers who had stunted children aged 2-5 years were participated. Responsive feeding was measured by a validated RFPAT questionnaire, and food intake was measured by 2x24 hour recall. Data were analysed using Spearman correlation test (p<0.05).Results: 52.2% of mothers had bad responsive feeding practices. Most children did not meet 80% of their energy, carbohydrate, and fat needs according to the RDA standards, but the majority of children (92.5%) met more than 80% of their protein needs. There is no statistically significant relationship between maternal responsive feeding and the stunting child's food intake.Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between responsive feeding of mothers and food intake of stunting children. It is necessary to conduct other more in-depth research related to the interaction of mother and child when eating, proper child feeding practices, and its relationship with children's food intake

    Deficiency of micronutrients in children of age 12-59 months in Lebih Village, Gianyar District, BaliBackground: Lack of food intake, either in quantity or quality, will continuously cause children to get sick easily, such as being susceptible to infectious diseases and ultimately inhibiting the children’s growth.Objective: This study aimed to describe the status of micronutrients (zinc and iodine) and anemia status among children aged 12-59 months in Lebih Village. Methods: This analytic observational study used a cross-sectional design conducted in Lebih Village, Gianyar Regency. The study population was all children under five aged 12-59 months. In addition, 91 children under five were selected as research subjects using the probability proportional to size method. The data collected were the identity of the subjects (children under five and their mothers) using the interview method, serum zinc levels, urinary iodine excretion (EIU) levels, and Hb levels. Results: The results showed that the subjects’ mean age was 37.0±13.3 months, and most subjects (54.9%) were male. The biochemical examination showed that the mean serum zinc levels, the median urine iodine levels, and the mean Hb levels were 72.5±6.3 g/dL, 78.5 g/L, and 12.7±1.8 g/dL, respectively. 17.6% of the subjects had anemia, 14.3% had zinc deficiency, and 60.4% had iodine deficiency.     Acceptance of adolescent girls on iron tablets in Yogyakarta, IndonesiaBackground: Supplementation of iron tablets is one of the efforts to combat anemia in adolescent girls taken by the government. However, compliance with iron tablet consumption still tends to be low. Objective: This study aims to determine the acceptance of adolescent girls to iron tablets in Yogyakarta. Methods: This study is a sequential explanatory mixed method. The investigation was conducted from January to April 2018. The subjects of the study were girls in junior high and high school of Yogyakarta, as many as 211 people with criteria 12-18 years; FGD/in-depth interview respondents were 32 students, four teachers/UKS officer, two Puskesmas officers, and one health program holder. Results: Of 204 subjects who received iron tablets, only 133 subjects (65.20%) consumed iron tablets, and 71 subjects (34.80%) did not. The organoleptic perception of subjects consisting of flavor, aroma, and color indicates they like iron tablets, but some also do not want them because they smell fishy. Side effects of iron tablets, such as nausea, heartburn, constipation, and dizziness, are the reasons the subject does not consume or spend the iron tablets given. In addition to the encouragement or support of parents, teachers or officers of UKS, and health workers, it is a factor that affects the acceptance of subjects against iron tablets. Conclusion: Factors influencing the acceptance of adolescent girls to iron tablets are a factor in self and factors from outside (parents, teachers, and health workers). Therefore, increasing the consumption of iron tablets requires young women's self-awareness, motivation, and support from various parties to obtain information related to the iron tablet, such as socializatio
