The Translation of Reiteration
Lexical cohesion has been a serious issue as it is one of the important features in a text. Every writer must consider kinds of lexical devices in writing a text and so do the translator. The main problem in translating the lexical cohesion devices is the different structure between two languages. One device can be applied in one language but not in other language. This journal analyzed the translation of reiteration as part of lexical cohesion devices appeared in the short stories The Black Cat and The Cask of Amontillado written by American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. The short stories were translated by two Indonesian translators namely Anton Kurnia and Shinta Dewi. This research is conducted to share the practice of translating literature works especially a short story which contains a lot of lexical cohesion devices and to give contribution to the development of translation as part of linguistic studies. In doing the research, qualitative and quantitative method is applied including observation, interviews, or document reviews. In the source text, it was found 120 of lexical cohesion devices in the short story â€The Cask of Amontillado†and 187 lexical cohesion devices in the short story “The Black Catâ€. The results obtained from this research were that Anton Kurnia translated 73% of lexical cohesion devices in the source language into the target language. Meanwhile, Shinta Dewi translated 94% of lexical cohesion devices in the source text to the target text
The Lexicon of Kaliuda to Improve the Student’s Descriptive Writing Text
This study aims to determine the kinds of lexicon discovered in kaliuda that has several motive so the students can learn and finding out the lexicon that improve students’ writing descriptive text. Because by studying and multiplying the vocabulary the students will be easier to write the descriptive text. Students’ ability to write descriptive text relates to mastery of vocabulary. Mastery vocabulary as a basic for mastering language skills that can increase students’ ability to express and writing as productive skill. The method of data collection in this study were obtained by observation consist of several technic, observe the students’ learning process then continued by data arranging suitable with lexicon that contained in Kaliuda as a learning media. The data obtained was conveyed by qualitative method. The students’ writing skill can increase of lexicon was found from kaliuda. The result of this study show that kaliuda has many lexicon inside. At the beginning the students asked to find out the various motive to described it. Based on the students’ descriptions of the kaliuda is able to make the students improve their writing descriptive text skill. By using kaliuda motive the students directly imagine what they will learn such as the lexicon, language use, and etc. Kaliuda as description quite interesting and good to enrich their vocabularies in order to improve the capability of writing descriptive text
Form, Meaning and Function of Argot in French Rap Song: Sociolinguistics Study
Music is one of the way to express emotions, opinions, and also criticism. The lyrics helps us to communicate, and spread its story. Argot in rap song is a sociolinguistic phenomenon that spreads in all languages, including French. The author conducted this study with the aim of knowing the formation of argot used, the meaning behind, and what correlation it has with situation in Marseille. The writer uses descriptive analysis method and theories that support this research are the theory of sociolinguistics and the process of forming argot Calvet (1994), as well as the theory of meaning Baylon and Mignot (1995). The conclusion contains apocope, apheresis, suffixation, and metonymy. The most uses type of formation is metonym. Metonym can deliver a figurative meaning to achieve dramatic effect, but still maintain its secretive nature. Argot has a relation with how singer express their situation and condition within their lyrics
Legal Language in the Process of Law Enforcement Against Illegal Business in the Border Region of the Republic of Indonesia with the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste
This research is an empirical legal research because of the gap between the provisions and theories that exist with the legal facts that occur in society, about transactions of goods that cross the boundaries of a country has been regulated nationally by each country through certain procedures through the laws of the country -that. Against illegal business in the border area of the Republic of Indonesia with the Democratic Republic of East Timor, law enforcement must be carried out by law enforcement as an effort to harmonize concrete actualization with the applicable legal rules, with the national legal aspects of each country and agreed aspects of international law. The barriers and solutions to law enforcement against illegal business can be resolved through social and cultural, economic, political and security, while the solution that is used as an alternative is development in the border region specifically directed to accelerate the handling of the 3 fundamental problems faced by the border area, namely the delimitation aspect and Delineation of Boundaries, the aspect of affirming the national boundaries of the watershed area of the Republic of Indonesia with the State of Timor Leste, the aspect of the development gap is the fulfillment of economic infrastructure needs to foster opportunities for border areas to participate and compete in global markets and regional markets
Speech Acts and Principles of Daily in Dental Post Advertisements on Youtube Period (2015-2018)
Every utterance that is uttered has a certain purpose and meaning. Thus, an effort is needed to interpret the utterance which is called speech acts. The aims of this research is to explain (1) types of speech acts (2) categories of illocutionary acts, and (3) politeness principles contained in the utterance on toothpaste advertisements on youtube period (2015-2018). The data in this research were taken from toothpaste advertisements that have been shown on television channels. The data collected are in the form of image footage and utterances contained in the advertisement. The results of the analysis show that (1) there is a difference between locution and illocutionary acts in adult’s and children's toothpaste advertisements, namely that adult toothpaste advertisements highlight information about the advantages of toothpaste, while the children's toothpaste advertisement emphasizes information about nonverbal advertising, (2) illocutionary acts in the advertisement indicated that there were 6 assertive utterances, 9 directive utterances, 6 commissive utterances, 6 expressive utterances, and 2 declarative utterances, (3) the politeness principles found in those advertisements are 15 tact maxims, 4 approbation maxims, and 6 symphaty maxims
Needs Analysis for Informatics Engineering Students as a Basis to Develop Teaching Materials on English for Specific Purposes
This research aims is to find and describe students' needs for ESP and find out students' perceptions of ESP teaching that has been running. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subject of this research was the first semester students of Informatics Engineering of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The data collection was done using online questionnaire on google form application. The data obtained were then classified so that the needs of Informatics Engineering students on English learning can be identified and then be described. The results of this research can be used as a reference for subsequent research, namely syllabus planning and the development of teaching materials of ESP. Referring to students awareness of the importance of speaking skill and the also the need of having grammar lessons as basis for their practical competence, it is a task for ESP lecturer to apply teaching strategies which are interesting, motivating and engaging to cover both areas in equal portion
Politeness in Anggoro Ihank’s "Pak Guru Inyong" Comic
This research aims to explore the accomplishment of politeness principles and the violation on the politeness principles in “Pak Guru Inyong†comic. This research was carried out using qualitative type of research. The data were collected by reading and taking notes from a 40 episode of the comic texts written by Anggoro Ihank and uploded in a Webstoon Aplication. The application was reached in Line application via android. The data were analyzed by using the theory of general strategy of politeness by Leech. The results of the analysis show that there are ten general strategies of politeness accomplished by the characters in the comic: generosity maxim, tact maxim, approbation maxim, and modesty maxim, obligation S to O maxim, obligation O to S maxim, agreement maxim, opinion maxim, sympathy maxim and feeling reticence maxim. There are five maxims violated by Pak Inyong, such as the maxims of generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, feeling reticence
Code Switching in English Language Learning at Pabelan Islamic Boarding School
This research aims to describe the use of code switching in English language learning, in terms of the form of code switching, the kind of code switching, the aim of code switching, the function of code switching and the causal factors of code switching. This study belongs to qualitative research. The subjects of this research were the English teacher and students. Meanwhile, the data were utterances of English teacher and students that contained code switching. The data were collected through observation, recording, note-taking and interview. Classroom activities, particularly in the teaching of English language, were recorded on video tapes and field notes. The data analysis revealed several findings. First, both teacher and students used word form of code switching, phrase form of code switching and sentence form of code switching when they were in the classroom. Second, the English teacher and the student used intern and extern code switching, temporary code switching, situational and metaphorical code switching. Third, the aim of using code switching done by the teacher and students were compensating for language limitation, to explain the material and strategy in teaching learning process. Fourth, the functions of code switching for teachers and student were as clarification, emphasis, repetition, translation, checking for understanding, tool for communication, developing vocabulary and tolerance. Fifth, the factors that caused code switching were to fulfil a need, to express or declare solidarity, to respect the listener and to be more informative
Taboo Words in 21 Jump Street Movie
The aim of this research is to classify the kinds, functions of taboo words, and the factors which cause the characters use the taboo words in the movie. Data were analyzed by using taboo words theory by Michael Swan and factors underlying cursing theory by Timothy Jay. The data were taken from 21 Jump Street movie. In this research, library research method is used in analyzing taboo words in 21 Jump Street movie. The procedures of the research are: first, the movie is watched and the topics for the paper are found. Second, the theory in the books and internet are found. Third, the movie script is searched and the taboo words are classified. The last, the taboo words in 21 Jump Street movie are discussed and analyzed by using Michael Swan and Timothy Jay theories. Based on the result of the analysis, there are three kinds of taboo word that found in 21 Jump Street movie: (1) religion, (2) private parts of the body and sexual activity, and (3) lavatory. Private parts of the body and sexual activity has the biggest number of occurrence, while the smallest number of taboo words’ kind is religion. There are six functions of using taboo words that I found in the movie. They are: insult, exclamation of annoyance, surprised question, exclamation of surprise, emphasize an emotion, and miscellaneous. The most appeared function is to insult and the smallest is as a surprised question. Furthermore, the reason of the characters in 21 Jump Street movie to used taboo words are based on the situation and context. On the other hand, there are three reasons of using taboo words which found in the movie, such as psychological condition, social class, and ethnic group. Psychological condition has the biggest number of occurrence, while the smallest is social class
The Specific Role of Verb “To Carry†in Balinese
A number of studies on verbs as one of the linguistic grammatical categories, serving to desccribe events, have been to explore in depth their more distinct types according to their semantic primitives under the natural semantic metalanguage theory approach. This research aims is to features the semantic types and specific roles of the verb ‘to carry’ in Balinese from the natural semantic metalanguage theory perspective. This study is a qualitative study. The semantic types of the verb in question was first classified in order to ease the identification of their specific semantic roles. The results of research show type of semantic roles were restricted to agent for the arguments serving as an actor of the activity described with the each of semantic type of the verb ‘to carry’ and patient for those serving as target of the said activity. This research discloses a 21 type of Balinese verbs which semantically have an intimate relation to the verb ‘to carry’; they are nèngtèng, ningting, nyangkol, nyangkil, nyuun, negen, ngandong, nenggolong, nyelet, nyelepit, ngabin, nampa, ngundit, nangal, nandan, nyekel, nikul, ngenyang, mundut, nyunggi, dan ngayot
