Hermeneutics Study: Analysis of Denotative And Connotative Meaning in The Song Berita Kepada Kawan By Ebiet G. Ade
The song is a sequence of beautiful words, often carrying meanings both connotative (figurative) and denotative (literal). This research aims to unveil the connotative and denotative meanings in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan†by Ebiet G. Ade. The theoretical framework employed in this study is hermeneutic research. It is a qualitative study where the data consists of sentences containing connotative and denotative meanings, and the source of the data is the lyrics of the song "Berita Kepada Kawan" by Ebiet G. Ade. Data were collected through free engagement observation. The researcher browsed the lyrics of the song “Berita Kepada Kawan†by Ebiet G. Ade, then listened attentively to each word, phrase, sentence, and stanza of the lyrics. Subsequently, the researcher noted every sentence containing connotative and denotative meanings. Following this, data analysis was conducted, involving validation and classification of each sentence based on its type. The researcher then interpreted the data within its contextual framework. The results of the study indicate two meanings embedded in the song “Berita Kepada Kawanâ€, denotative and connotative. The denotative meaning portrays struggle, sadness, both mental and physical, while the connotative meaning depicts a solitary journey, sorrow, adversity, and loss of life. Thus, this hermeneutic research provides a profound understanding of the complexity of meanings in the song “Berita Kepada Kawan,†summarizing it within the conceptual framework of hermeneutics that includes both connotative and denotative analyses
EFL Teachers’ Perceptions of Implementing Higher-Order Thinking Skills During English Online Learning
This present study aims to explore the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions of implementing the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and their strategies in their English online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak. A qualitative descriptive design was applied for the present study. Five EFL teachers (1 male and 4 females) from SMKN 1 Seyegan, Yogyakarta were involved in the data gathering process. The data were obtained from a semi-structured interview conducted face to face, and the data were analyzed descriptively. The findings of the present study revealed that teachers' perceptions of implementing HOTS in English online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak were varied among them. Furthermore, three respondents: Mr. S, Mrs. ECU, and Mrs. IL found it hard to fully implement HOTS in their online learning and teaching due to several factors such as students' low level of English knowledge, the nature of the topic delivered, and digital literacy. The findings also revealed that there are four strategies applied by the EFL teachers in conducting HOTS during their English online learning, they are through the activities of 1) reading a text; 2) watching videos; 3) creating the learning products, and 4) stimulating questions
Fishery Ecolexicon in Kambera
This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to study and describe the ecolexicon that represents the fisheries sector in Waingapu using ecolinguistics theory. This theory emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between language and the environment. The data collection methods used are in-depth interviews and observation. Data are analyzed using the padan method, specifically teknik pilah unsur penentu (the determinant element sorting technique). Informants are people who live and work in the fisheries sector, such as fishermen, fishmongers, and fishery practitioners. Data analysis shows that there are lexicons in Kambera related to the fishery sector which consists of nouns and verbs from the point of view of lexical categories. Nouns dominate the list and contain most of the names of fishery products such as fishes, crabs, clams, and others. Besides, it also consists of terms of fishing equipment. For verbs, they are related to fishing activities. 
The Meaning of Visual Elements of Hotel Advertisements on New Normal Era
The situation of Covid-19 Pandemic which happened in the world have brought a very big impact to the life of the people. This also brought a big impact of tourism in Bali in which the life of people in Bali depends on the tourism a lot. Therefore, some big hotels try to find to various strategies to fasten the recovery of tourism in Bali. Some of them are promoting their hotels which guarantee that the guests are safe when they are staying in the hotels. Besides, they also create innovative package advertisements to attract the guests. This makes me interested in making the research on The Meaning of Visual Elements of Hotel Advertisements on New Normal Era. This research is focused on two problems, namely (1) what visual elements are used on the hotel advertisements and (2) what are their meanings. The data were taken from some of the hotels around Sanur and analysed by using semiotic theory. The results of the analysis revealed that the visual elements used are pictures of food, drinks, and some other objects related with the application of health protocol such as, mask, wash basin, soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant, temperature gun, face shield, and the like. All them convey affected meaning in this case to influence the readers to buy the products or to come and stay in the hotels promoted
The Function of Old Manuscript Reading and Its Preservation in the Sasak Community of West Sakra District
This research aims to determine the functions and methods of preserving old manuscripts in the Sasak community in the west Sakra district. This research is motivated by the existence of manuscripts that have a function in the culture of the Sasak community in the West Sakra sub-district and proves whether the use of certain manuscripts is limited to community suggestions or whether there are other purposes. Data collection was carried out by observation and interviews with an emic approach and analyzed using functional theory. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the Jatiswara script serves as a ‘circumcision’ diving ritual for boys because diving is an Islamic process as described in the Jatiswara text, namely the mulene game slam ‘a person’s Islam is not perfect if it has not been circumcised. The Indarjaya script serves as a remedy for people who are ‘unable to speak’. It is depicted in the story of the daughter who could not speak, namely the princess nengke kayun ngandike ‘the princess wants to talk’. While the Selandir script serves as a ritual remedy for kepaq people ‘cannot walk’. It was described in Selandir’s text that reads still lemper bise lumaris ‘still unable to walk. Meanwhile, the manuscript preservation process is carried out in two ways, namely internal and external. Internally, preservation is carried out by direct inheritance and copying of manuscripts. Meanwhile, external preservation is carried out by establishing customary institutions, puppetry, digitization, translation, and transformation of manuscripts
Agentive Movement Verbs in the Study of the Angkola Batak Language
The Angkola Batak language is a regional language that has 2 types of verbs, namely agentive motion verbs and patient motion verbs. In this study we will discuss agentive motion verbs.The purpose of this study is to determine the categorization of agentive verbs in the Batak Angkola language so that there are no mistakes in the meaning of words. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques using interviews.The results of this study indicate that agentive movement verbs (VGA) are categorized based on eleven components
The Analysis of Figurative Language on The Novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini: A Hermeneutic Approach
The Novel of Tarian Bumi is one of the novels that tells about a woman who is of a different caste than men, both related to social status, culture, injustice and violence. In this novel, Oka Rusmini uses figurative language in telling the phenomenon of caste differences between men and women.The purpose of this research is to describe the using of the kinds of figurative in the novel of Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini. The research method is reading hermeneutic, that is the reading which can find out the meaning of the text readed. The result of this research showed that Oka Rusmini used two figurative language categories, namely namely figure speech and elements of rhetoric. The figure of speech used by Oka Rusmini in the novel Tarian Bumi is a figure of speech of simile, metaphor, hyperbole, while the rhetorical elements contained in the novel are repetition, anaphora and parallelism. Oka Rusmini many times used figurative language in the novel of Tarian Bumi image is to unable can give the effect to the readers and the readers are curious to know the messages that delivered because figurative language has the big impression on getting the good effect to Novel of Tarian Bumi. Besides, figurative language make people easy to understands about the meaning which are contained in the novel
Exploring Figurative Language: Expressions and Metaphors in Sports Reporting of Java Pos (Edition, June 1, 2018)
The utilization of figurative language in sports reporting significantly enhances communication’s allure and competitiveness within this realm. Figurative language entails expressions not meant to be taken literally but carrying implied meanings that enrich interpretation for readers or listeners. It crucially illustrates action and drama in sports news, engendering a more immersive reading experience and influencing how events are comprehended. This research probes into the use of figurative language, particularly expressions and metaphors, within sports reporting's context. The study’s focal point was the June 1, 2018 edition of the esteemed Indonesian newspaper, Java Pos, renowned for its vibrant sports reporting, particularly in football. Data consisted of expressions and metaphors in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, sourced from Java Pos' sports reporting (June 1, 2018 edition), especially relating to football. The methodology involved participatory observation reading 7 football-specific sports pieces and scrutinizing each for expressions and metaphors. Additionally, documentation was employed collecting and analyzing articles from the designated edition to assess metaphors and expressions through a figurative language lens. Post data collection, data was condensed and classified by category (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and numerals) then verified and interpreted contextually. Content analysis was applied for data analysis, comprehending the contextual use and its impact on reader comprehension. The findings unveiled the presence of expressions and metaphors, encompassing verb phrases, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, in the news reports. This study uncovers the usage of figurative language, enriching communication, fostering creativity, and contributing to elevated sports reporting quality and deeper audience understanding
The Use of Engghi-Bhunten Speaking Levels by Madurese Students in Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School: A Sociolinguistic Study
The speech level of èngghi-bhunten holds significant importance within the broader context of the ML and culture. It refers to a distinct level of speech that reflects cultural values, social norms, and a rich historical layer. This study examines the form, function, factors, and the context of using the ML èngghi-bhunten at the Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School Situbondo. This research is a type of qualitative research. The method of data collection is in the form of an observation method. The observations carried out included the listening-engagement technique, the free listening-engagement technique, supported by recording and note-taking techniques and supplemented by the interview method. The observation method was employed to observe the use of èngghi-bhunten speech level at Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School. The researcher recorded social interactions, usage contexts, and the underlying factors behind the use of èngghi-bhunten. Besides, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Madurese students (santri) who possessed knowledge about the usage of èngghi-bhunten. Through these interviews, the researcher gained a deeper understanding of the perceptions, meanings, and contexts surrounding the use of èngghi-bhunten. The collected data were then written in the form of orthographic writing. The analytical method used in this research is contextual analysis, namely the analysis method applied to the data by basing, calculating, and linking the context which is a means of clarifying an intention in the form of a situation related to an event. The results showed that (1) the èngghi-bhunten only used in the dhelem family (Kiai and Nyai); (2) santri always use ML èngghi-bhunten to Kiai and Nyai as a reflection of the Salaf pesantren and as a form of polite manners
The Semiotic Study of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni: Understanding The Significance of Symbolic Communication in the Modernization Era of East Kasiyan Village
In the contemporary world, the dynamics of culture and communication are constantly evolving due to the forces of modernization. Traditional rituals and practices often undergo transformations as societies adapt to new realities. The research aims to analyze symbolic communication in the ritual of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni in the village of East Kasiyan, using a semiotic approach. In the context of modernization, the ritual faces challenges in preserving its meaning and relevance amid social and cultural changes. Therefore, this study seeks to understand the symbolic values embedded in the ritual and the role of symbolic communication in strengthening cultural identity and social cohesion in the community. The research adopts a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis method. This research employs a qualitative research design, aiming to deeply explore the semiotic aspects of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni ritual and its significance in the context of modernization. Data is collected through participatory observation during the implementation of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni, as well as in-depth interviews with 20 participants, they were 5 community figures, 5 local leaders, and 10 cultural practitioners related to the communication. Besides, relevant documents and literature are used to support the analysis. The research findings reveal that Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni is a ritual rich in signs and symbols, including language, bodily movements, and ritual objects. These signs form a complex system of symbolic communication, containing profound meanings about tradition, religious beliefs, as well as identity and social relationships in the community
