    Metaheuristic behaviour analysis: relating search behaviour to algorithmic components

    Metaheuristic optimisation algorithms are often benchmarked and compared based purely on their performance. Other information that results from executing these algorithms has been discarded for a long time but within the last years, this detailed data on the search behaviour of metaheuristics gains more and more attention, emphasising its usefulness for a variety of research aspects. It increases the understanding of the search process of metaheuristics and informs on the effects of algorithmic components. This knowledge can then be utilised to develop improved strategies, to provide details for automated algorithm design approaches and to explain the search process to users, which can ultimately increase their trust in metaheuristics. As research on metaheuristic search behaviour is in parts still in its infancy, it is not yet established what is required to get comprehensive insights into the algorithms. There is no consistent strategy to describe and implement metaheuristics to make extensive conceptual and empirical comparisons possible. For an empirical behaviour analysis, appropriate corresponding measures of the behaviour are required and although there is a wide variety of such measures, their usefulness is not evaluated in a wider context. Additionally, an empirical analysis of several behaviour characteristics and relating those to specific metaheuristic components produces large amounts of data, which causes many common analysis methods to reach their limits. This work advances the analysis of metaheuristic behaviour by exploring strategies to alleviate those problems. For this, a unified, component-based view on metaheuristics and criteria that can discern these algorithms are investigated to enable a conceptual examination. The unified, component-based view is then utilised as the basis for the development of the software framework MAHF that enables extensive experiments with metaheuristics to analyse their search behaviour in relation to the algorithmic components, but also to determine useful behaviour characteristics. As this process generates large amounts of data, approaches based on unsupervised learning techniques, namely clustering and dimensionality reduction, are analysed that can aggregate the information without loosing important details. The developed foundation for metaheuristic behaviour analysis in relation to the algorithmic components is then applied on a range of algorithmic configurations to examine their behaviour as well as to verify the usefulness of the approaches. It is shown that interesting and unexpected behaviour can be connected to the specific algorithmic components but also that basing behaviour analyses on a combination of different measures provides a more complete understanding. Furthermore, the information from this experiment is used in an additional study where it is used to inform improvement strategies for a common metaheuristic algorithm. Overall, this work highlights the importance of researching metaheuristic behaviour but also strategies that can be applied in this context. There is, however, still much to be done and some important aspects of future research are highlighted

Although political TV interviews can reveal a lot about the changing relationship between journalism and politics in media-centered democracies, respective knowledge in Austria is limited – especially during non-election times. Against this background, this project aims to generate insights about interviews' political agendas, actors’ specific conversation strategies and the staging of politics in a long-term comparison by an analysis of the format ORF "Sommergespräche" ("Summer Talks"), broadcast since 1981 by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Following a static-dynamic approach with origins in linguistics, a quantitative content analysis was applied to all single statements from all 125 episodes broadcast between 1981 and 2016. To consider the changing role of media according to the "mediatization" thesis, the analysis also considered aspects of media logic, which have been identified as factors that shape agenda-setting strategies in related contexts. Based on this extensive material, the project aims to answer questions as the following: How successful are moderators and, in contrast, political guests in controlling the interview's agenda? Which conversation strategies by journalists and politicians are the most effective within the discussion? Which influence do aspects of media logic have on the success of agenda control? Which role does gender play in the interplay between journalistic and political actors

    Quantifying the spatial extent and attenuation of lake thermal regulation at diurnal scales under extreme heat

    Lakes worldwide are experiencing intensifying extreme heat, with escalating ecological impacts. Despite lakes' role as thermal buffers to modulate air temperature is well-documented, the spatial propagation dynamics of lake effects remain poorly understood due to complex interactions of lake-atmosphere. This study proposes a synergistic WRF modeling and directional buffer analysis framework to investigate the spatial propagation dynamics and underlying physical mechanisms of lake-induced thermal regulation during extreme heat, focusing on Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake. The results demonstrate a pronounced diurnal asymmetry in lake-induced thermal effects, with distinct spatial propagation characteristics between daytime and nighttime periods. Daytime cooling exhibits an intensity of −1.16 °C, with its influence confined within a 40 km radius, showing a relatively rapid attenuation rate of 0.28 °C per 10 km. In contrast, nighttime warming (+0.97 °C) propagates 1.75 times farther than its daytime counterpart, extending up to 70 km downwind while maintaining a slower attenuation rate of 0.13 °C per 10 km. Directional analysis reveals north-oriented propagation of lake thermal effects, influenced by prevailing southerly winds and lake-land breeze. Vertical profile analysis reveals distinct altitudinal penetration of lake-induced thermal effects, with daytime influences confined below 900 hPa while nighttime impacts extend up to 700 hPa. Daytime cooling extent is limited by turbulent mixing, whereas nighttime warming is enhanced by stable air conditioning and advective transport. The study underscores the role of lake-atmosphere interactions in mitigating regional climate extremes, providing critical insights for nature-based heat adaptation strategies in lake-rich regions.
