SAUDI ARABIAN WOMAN’S MARRIAGE LIFE IN GIRLS OF RIYADH, A NOVEL BY RAJAA ALSANEA: SUBORDINATION AND STRUGGLE
Get PDFThis article argues that implementation of Pre-Islamic tradition and culture emerges subordination toward woman in Saudi Arabia. They face subordination in many aspects of life. This phenomenon can be found in Girls of Riyadh novel. In this novel, Rajaa Alsanea, a Saudi Arabian woman writer tells how women live under male domination. In analyzing the phenomena, the writer used feminist approach by applying feminism theory which is combined with Islamic references to reveal subordination and struggle of woman depicted in the novel. LANGUAGE STYLES USED BY MALE AND FEMALE BLOGGERS IN THE BLOGOSPHERE
Get PDFInteraction will not occur properly if someone does not speak with the right style.  In this study, the ways of bloggers comment the blog perhaps can be investigated from the characteristics of language styles to show casualty, intimacy, consultatively, deliberatively and oratorical. In addition, the characteristic of their language style perhaps show some phenomenon according to their sexual identity. This research is intended to answer: What language styles are used by male and female bloggers to express their thoughts on ontd_political.livejournal.com? The objective of the study is to get the deep description about the problem of the study which is defining male and female bloggers in using their language style on ontd_political.livejournal.com. Moreover, the study will find the dominant style that occur in the blog . The writer finds that male and female bloggers in the blogosphere use three kinds of language styles, which are; consultative, casual and intimate.  According to the result, casual style that dominates among others is more influenced by informal situation in the blog. The researcher concludes that setting and sexes are such factors that influence the language style that been used by bloggers to express their opinion in ontd_political.livejournal.com. In addition to their writing form, the researcher assumes that many bloggers use the typical of spoken language to write their comment.  They write by using the typical of spoken form language which has no formality and preplanning. Moreover, some of them use inappropriate words to be shown in written form. Therefore, the researcher concludes that the comments in the ontd_political.livejournal.com are not definitely as written form according to the language variety perspective. Key Words: Language Style, Male and Female and Blogospher
Code Switching and Code Mixing Found in the Novel Supernova: Ksatria, Puteri dan Bintang Jatuh by Dewi Lestari
Get PDFLanguage is a tool of communication from one person to another. They use English as one of the international language to be able to communicate with people from other nations. As we know, western culture has been spread in Indonesia especially in language terms. As a consequence, most of the Indonesian people use the variety of languages. The variety of language in Indonesia includes code switching and code mixing. The phenomenon of switching and mixing languages can be found in many aspects, for example in films, poems, songs, and novels. From this reason, the writer takes Supernova: Ksatria, Puteri dan Bintang Jatuh by Dewi Lestari novel as the object of this study because there are many code switching and code mixing terms of English and Indonesia used in this novel. This study investigated the types of code switching and code mixing which occur in the dialogues spoken by the main characters and the reasons why the characters switch or mix their dialogues. The writer used theories proposed by Hoffmann (1991). This study used a descriptive qualitative method because it provided description data. In addition, the writer described the type of code switching and code mixing of each utterance in the novel. The results showed from 108 utterances, 75 for Intra-sentential, 26 for Intersentential, four for intra-lexical, and three for establishing continuity with the previous speaker. It is because there are many of English terms that are familiar to them so that they can use in their utterances easily. The results also showed from 108 utterances, 26 utterances include reason talking about particular topic and eight other reasons also appear in the data. In conclusion, the writer found four types and nine reasons about the use of code switching and code mixing. The writer suggests the students of English Department to analyze code mixing and code switching in a movie or script. Besides, the next researcher can study more about other speech analysis such as presupposition and address terms

The study uses qualitative description used to explain the result. The data source is aRich Man Poor Woman of Japanese drama. The result of the study was: There were 28 declarative sentences consisted of politeness strategies to be found inRich Man Poor Woman drama. These strategies consisted of positive strategies : (1) Notice, attend to H :his interests, wants, needs, goods. (2) Exaggerate: interests, symphaty with H. (3) Intensify interest to H. (4) Avoid agreement: Token agreement, pseudo- agreement, white lies, hedging opinions. (5) Presuppose/raise/assert common ground: gossip, small talk. (6) Joke. (7) Assert or presuppose S’s knowledge of and concern for H’s wants. (8) Offer, promise. (9) Be optimistic. (10) Include both S and H in the activity. (11) Give or ask for reasons. (12) Seek agreement:safe topics, repetition.These strategies consisted of negative strategies : (1) Be pessimistic. (2) Impersonalize S and H. (3) State the FTA as a general rule. (4) Nominalize. THE STRUGGLE OF FORD WOMEN WORKERS AGAINST STEREOTYPE AS DEPICTED IN MADE IN DAGENHAM THE MOVIE
Get PDFEquality, rights and women position are what women desire. The position of women at their era made women who are called feminist initiate a movement to gain equal rights with men. The movie entitled Made in Dagenham revealed the struggles of the women who worked at Ford, a car factory in the town of Dagenham, against the stereotypes attached to women to get equal pay with men. This research uses a feminism approach that focuses on Marxist feminism. This study also uses the concept of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. The result of the study reveals women are treated unfairly in a society that has been established to prioritize men. The movie Made in Dagenham showed one example of injustice faced by the women of the working class. They obtain a lower salary than male workers. Rita O'Gardy, the main character in this movie leads the movement that aim to get equal pay for women and break the stereotype that women are unskilled labors. Their rights are rights which inherent in human nature and existence. Nevertheless domination of patriarchy still emerges in social life. Men still consider women as the weak creatures. Many men still underestimate everything done by women. They think that women cannot do the works which are usually done by men and women are forced to obey everything they said. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine how the depiction of social injustice toward women by LAPD in performing their authority in wrong way and how the struggle of a woman in her fight for her rights to get her missing son. And it is also to describe the message of Changeling the movie to the audience. Focus of this research study uses a feminist analysis of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a Radical Feminist figure, which discusses gender inequality presented in Changeling as research material. The writer uses gender inequality developed by Gilman. Gilman thinks that women and men have different sex principles and women are seen more weak than men by their culture. The results indicate a violation of women’s right by the policemen, that is Christine which is forced by police to admit a child who is not her son. And the police also put her in a psychopathic ward for refusing police orders. If Human continuously exploits nature without any concern for other forms of organisms, the results of it will be terrible for all living organisms. Nature can be a source of inspiration for creating many forms of art, such as poems, paintings, movies and animes (Japanese animation). One of the animes that covers the mutual relation between mankind and nature is entitled Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pompoko. This anime portrays the very relation between the two sides (mankind and nature) in a small town called “Tama New Town.†Therefore, in this research the writer will give a response to the formulation of the problem, which is how the relation between mankind and nature are portrayed in the anime. By utilizing the study of environmental literary criticism, this research will explain the reciprocal relation between mankind and nature that happens descriptively through text and pictures. The result of this research shows not only the beneficial side of the relation, but also the disrupting side as well, such as forest exploitation, environmental pollution and wild animal hunting. Aside from the entertainment purposes, anime can be used as a learning medium regarding sociocultural and environmental aspects of life. Therefore, the writer suggests to further analyze anime through different approaches, such as through the study of folklore to discover the role of tanuki in Japanese culture. AN ANALYSIS OF CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE FOUND IN THE AMERICAN TV SERIES SUPERNATURAL: SEASON 6
Get PDFThis study was conducted to find out the types of conversational implicature in the American TV Series Supernatural: Season 6. The writer selected Supernatural: Season 6 as the data source because the characters often produced implicature utterances. This research discovered that two types of conversational implicature based on the theory of Grice were used by the characters while having conversations with each other. They produced the conversational implicature by either obeying or flouting the conversational maxims. From the occurrence of all types of conversational implicature, the characters mostly used the particularized conversational implicature because most of the utterances they produced required context to interpret the implied meanings. Get PDFParents should provide protection and basic  need  for their children. A child who does not get the basic needs and gets torture from the parents will be in unstable    psychological       conditions.                This                   skripsi focuses              on           children’s psychological condition after being tortured by his mother. The purpose of this research is to analyze Dave’s psychological condition as a child abuse victim in Dave Pelzer’s A Child Called It. Psychological approach is used in analyzing this novel because every torture done by Dave’s mother gives negative effects to Dave’s psychological condition. The result of this research shows that Dave suffers from some abuses such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Those abuses affects his psychological  conditions  in  the  forms  of  lacking  trust  on  others,  having difficulties  in  making  friends,  feeling  worthless  and  damaged  and  facing difficulties in managing emotion. In this research, there are two problems: (1) what kinds of deixis are usedin Aku Kesepian, Sayang. Datanglah, Menjelang Kematian by Seno Gumira Ajidarma? and (2)what are the meanings of the deictic expressions? The researcher uses a qualitative method sincethe research concerns with the application of language style to the written text. In this study, theresearcher finds that in three short stories, Kyoto Monogatari, Legenda Wongasu, and LayangLayangthere are five types of deixis: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis,and social deixis.Keywords: Pragmatics, Deixis, Short Stor
