ANALISIS GAYA HIDUP NAOMI DALAM NOVEL CHIJIN NO AI KARYA TANIZAKI JUN’ICHIROU MELALUI PENDEKATAN CULTURAL STUDIES
Get PDFKarya sastra merupakan gambaran dari kehidupan masyarakat. Sebagaimana gambaran masyarakat Jepang pada zaman Taisho yang mendapat pengaruh besar dari kebudayaan Barat sebagai akibat adanya restorasi Meiji. Besarnya pengaruh budaya Barat saat itu berakibat pada penerapan gaya hidup ala Barat yang menjadi populer bagi masyrakat Jepang khususnya pada zaman Taisho. Oleh karena itu, dalam penelitian kali ini penulis meneliti bagaimana dampak masuknya budaya Barat pada zaman Meiji yang tercermin pada penerapan gaya hidup tokoh utama dalam novel Chijin no Ai karya Tanizaki Jun’ichirou. Pada penelitian kali ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan cultural studies yang berfokus pada pengaruh budaya Barat terhadap kehidupan masyarakat Jepang khususnya pada zaman Taisho. Dalam meneliti novel ini, penulis juga menggunakan teori postkolonial sebagai teori pendukung dalam menganalisis. Hasil penelitian kali ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam novel Chijin no Ai terdapat beberapa kutipan dialog tokoh utama yang menerapkan gaya hidup kebarat-baratan, dengan memakai baju Barat, mengkonsumsi makanan Barat serta bergaul dengan orang-orang Barat. Hal tersebut merupakan pengaruh budaya Barat yang menjadi populer pada zaman Taisho. Tindak Tutur Ilokusi dalam Drama Namae o Nakushita Megami episode 1
Get PDFDalam berkomunikasi manusia saling menyampaikan suatu informasi yang bisa berupa ide ataupun perasaan penutur kepada lawan tutur dan dalamsetiap komunikasi akan menimbulkan tindak tutur. Tindak tutur ilokusimerupakan tindak tutur yang paling banyak muncul dalam komunikasi. Tindaktutur ilokusi adalah tindak tutur yang biasanya diidentifikasi dengan kalimatperformatif yang eksplisit. Tindak tutur ilokusi dapat ditemukan hampir di setiapkomunikasi baik dalam kehidupan sehari-hari ataupun dalam novel, film, dramadan iklan. Begitu juga drama Jepang yang berjudul Namae o Nakushita Megamiyang menjadi objek penelitian ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori pengklasifikasian tindak tutur ilokusimilik Yule sebagai acuan dan merupakan penelitian jenis deskriptif. Hasil daripenelitian ini adalah, ditemukannya empat jenis tindak tutur ilokusi, yaiturepresentatif, ekspresif, komisif dan direktif. Di mana fungsi yang ditemukanadalah menegaskan, kebenaran atau fakta, penjelasan dan menyimpulkan  dalamrepresentatif. Fungsi menunjukkan perasaan senang, bingung, sedih dan tidaksuka dalam ekspresif. Fungsi menolak, berjanji dan mengancam dalam komisif.Serta fungsi menyuruh atau memerintah, menawarkan, mengajak,memperingatkan, mengijinkan dan meminta tolong dalam tindak tutur ilokusidirektif. Masih banyak penelitian pragmatik lainnya yang bisa dilakukanmenggunakan sumber data ini, seperti tindak tutur ilokusi direktif orang tua padaanaknya atau pengajar pada anak didiknya. Kata Kunci: tindak tutur, tindak tutur ilokusi
GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE USE OF PARTS OF SPEECH: AN ANALYSIS OF POPULAR AND FEMINA MAGAZINES
Get PDFThis research focuses on analyzing the differences of male andfemale magazines in the use of parts of speech which arepronouns and specifiers. Popular and Femina magazines areselected as the data sources since the contents of Popular arebelieved to represent male’s characteristics and of Femina arebelieved to represent female’s characteristics. Furthermore, theresearcher takes six steps in analyzing the data: identifying,organizing and coding the data, displaying the data intonumbers, analyzing the data found, discussing the finding, anddrawing conclusion. The results show that there are eight topicsout of thirteen topics in which pronouns are used with greaterfrequency in Femina rather than in Popular. Femina usespronouns in higher percentage rather than Popular. Thepercentage is 44.6% for Femina and 37.3% for Popular.Therefore, it can be inferred that pronouns are used with greaterfrequency in female magazine (Femina) rather than malemagazine (Popular).Keywords: Gender, Gender Differences, Pronouns, Specifiers,Magazin
THE STUDY OF JARGON USED IN CAPOEIRA SENZALA UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA GROUP
Get PDFThis study is designed to figure out what the jargons used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya group are and what the meanings of jargon used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya group are. It is conducted not only to understand but also to describe the application of the jargons used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya group. The data sources are the members and the instructors of this group. has found out 40 jargons used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya group. Jargon is classified into two terms, namely lexical term consisting of 12 terms and technical terms which consist of 28 terms used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya group. Moreover, the meanings and the usages are significant in communication. It can be concluded that jargons used by Capoeira Senzala Universitas Brawijaya have their own specific meaning which can be understood by people in that group community or group. MENTAL LEXICON ON THE JAVANESE WORDS AMONG FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA
Get PDF           At least 45% of the Indonesian population are the people who live in an area where Javanese is the dominant language. In having conversation, it is essential for Javanese to be polite, not only our utterances but also our body language. In East Java, there are 5 language variations among the society due to the strategic boundaries; nearby Central Java, Madura Island, and Bali Island. This research is conducted to 3 language variations in East Java, namely: Surabaya Dialect, Mataraman Dialect, and Padhalungan Dialect. In order to see the mental storage of Javanese, the writer uses Word Association Test (WAT) through Javanese words. There are two problems to be solved, namely: (1) what are the participants’ responses of the stimulus words; (2) what kind of types shown in WAT in the participants’ responses.           The participants who join the test were 35 students consisting of: 15 students come from Surabaya dialect, 14 students come from Mataraman dialect, and 9 students from Padhalungan dialect. All of them are the 4th year students of English Study Program at Universitas Brawijaya. This study proposes qualitative approach since it could show the reality in the social life clearly in different dialects around East Java. The participants were gathered into a class, then given a questionaire consisting 8 stimulus words.           The result of this study reveals that the East Javanese students having different dialect store the Javanese words differently, although the findings did not lead to the big gap among the three groups. The Surabaya and Padhalungan dialects had more syntactical relation in the responses; while Mataraman was paradigmatic relation. In terms of Javanese styles, the findings revealed that the Surabaya and Padhalungan dialect had a similiar pattern in terms of the use of Ngoko Javanese. While the participants from Mataraman dialect tended to use a more polite form.                  In the future, the writer hopes there will be more students in the Faculty of Cultural Studies who conduct Mental Lexicon as the focus of study; since there were still limited number of students who want to deal with this subject. Also, this research of Psycholinguistics can be a guidance for the students for a reference. For further researcher, a suggestion to make research in another topic such as: the comparison between language variation differences to be the next case study.Keywords: mental lexicon, word association test, Javanese words
THE IMPLICATURE IN FLOUTING MAXIM OF RELATION BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN IRON MAN 2 MOVIE

In order to have good communication, the speaker and theThis study uses qualitative approach because the writer analyzes conversations in movie. The result of the study shows that there are 7 reasons why the main character flouts the maxim. This study also shows that there are 20 utterances containing flouting maxim of relation. Furthermore, this study alsoreveals that the using of flouting maxim of relation makes conversation moreinteresting.Hopefully, this study will inspire the next researchers to broaden their pointof view in order to look for the problems of the study. THE CHANGES OF WOMEN’S IMAGE REPRESENTED BY SNOW WHITE CHARACTER IN MIRROR MIRROR MOVIE

There are a lot of genres in movie, for example drama, thriller,action, etc. Some of the exist movie, there is a fairytale or fiction story. Fairy talestories usually tells about prince and princess. Nevertheless, modernfairytale portrayed female domination in the story. The writer conducts a studyabout the changes of gender role as reflected in the movie Mirror Mirror. There is a problem to be solved, which is how Snow White as the main character in the movie changes the women image and gender role. As a comparative, the writer uses Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie. This study uses qualitative approach in relation to analyze the object material.To figure out the research question, the writer uses Gender Studies whichemploys three concepts, they are Traditional Gender Role, Patriarchal, and Gender Equalit This study uncovers Snow White experience in the changing of gender role and the image of woman. The result showsthat there is a changing of women image represent by Snow White in Mirror Mirror movie. Women in Mirror Mirror are no longer images as weak character. They now images as strong and brave character. It is recommended to do a further research in order to acquire new knowledge from this movie. The suggestion for the next researchersis that they can use Marxist theory from the capitalist point of view in analyzing this movie. TEACHING ENGLISH FOR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY AT TK AL-AZHAR MOJOKERTO)

The teacher should use appropriate technique and method tomake the students interested in learning English. The aim of teaching and learningEnglish for kindergarten students is to introduce English in early age so that theywill be familiar with English. This study was conducted to investigate the techniques and methods usedby the English teacher in TK Al-Azhar, the materials used to support teaching andlearning English, and the students’ participat ion in learning English. This researchwas conducted using qualitative research design, and the instrument used wereinterview, observation, and document analysis. The findings of this research were (1) the technique and method used bythe teacher could attract kindergarten students to learn English well. The teachingtechnique used by the teacher were singing songs, sensing using picture cards toexplain the material, imitat ing the teacher’s pronunciat ion, drilling the studentspronunciation, giving test to the students; (2) the supporting material to teach thekindergarten students were textbooks and picture series. While, the media forteaching English were songs created by the teacher or obtained from training, thepicture cards taken from the picture series or students’ handbook and real object.(3) The students are enthusiastic and happy in learning English. They were activein class and quickly understood what the teacher taught. In conclusion, the use of picture cards and songs are helpful for the teacherto attract the students and make the class more fun. Besides, applying theappropriate methods and techniques in teaching English can achieve the target inteaching English for kindergarten students. It means that to understand the message and informationfrom English into Indonesian, it needs translation. The writer conducted ananalysis of Indonesian version in children’s storybook entitled Ms Wiz the Series‘Ms Wiz Goes Live’ based on communicative translation method. Since, thisanalysis is dealing with the children, there are two problems to be solved in thisstudy, namely: (1) what are the inappropriate terms found in Indonesian version ofChildren’s Bilingual Story Book Ms Wiz the Series ‘Ms Wiz Goes Live’ ByTerence Blacker; (2) how to analyze the inappropriate terms found in Indonesianversion of Children’s Bilingual Story Book Ms Wiz the Series ‘Ms Wiz GoesLive’ By Terence Blacker using communicative translation method based onchildren context. This study used qualitative approach since it was intended to explain theanalysis of the inappropriate terms found in Indonesian version of ‘Ms Wiz GoesLive’ using communicative translation method based on children context. Thisstudy was also categorized as a document analysis since this study used text as thedata source.  This study revealed that from 587 sentences there have been 144inappropriate sentences found in Indonesian version of Ms Wiz Goes Live;Ms WizJadi Bintang Televisi which sound awkward, confusing, taboo, and it is not appropriate with the context of the children. Especially in translating childrenliterature and generally another topic it needs translator visibility and invisibility.In this case the translator also must be loyal to the original author of the book.Furthermore, omission, addition, and revision are badly needed.   The writer suggested that  English Department students have to learnmore about translation especially abut context and culture. The writer also suggestto person who wants to conduct an analysis for children can analyse deeplyanother topic that related to the translation of children’s literature such as thetranslator of the storybook, the egocentric and the social child, adult authority,transaction and dialogue, the SL ,etc. Keywords: translation, communicative translation, translating for children’s book
CHIEF CARL BRASSHEAR’S STRUGGLE AGAINST RACISM IN MEN OF HONOR MOVIE

The practice of racism has made a great impact in every socialaspect between white American and the African-American citizen. At that time,colored people were oppressed by racial discrimination and injustice treatment.Some were struggling to get their rights, as it is portrayed in Men of Honor movie.It is a true story movie tells about Carl Brasshear’s struggle against racism in theUS Navy. After facing all discrimination and racial injustice, Carl succeeded tobecome the first colored people served in the US Navy.Related to the issue of racism occurs in the movie, Lawrence and Kelleherdefined the term of Structural racism as a system of hierarchy and inequity,primarily characterized by white supremacy to maintain their authority overoppressed people. The structural racism occurs in the institution is called asinstitutional racism. As it is shown in the movie, Carl had many obstacles infulfilling his dream caused by racial discrimination. The racial discrimination inthe US Navy is maintained by white supremacy to control their power and toeliminate the opportunity for colored people.This research found out (1) Racism which mostly occurs in the movie is aninstitutional racism where the setting and the story took place in the US Navy asan institution. (2) Spirit, faith, endurance, hard work, and promise to his fatherwere Carl’s strongest motivations to fight against racism.
