In order to communicate well with the readers, novel authors try to direct  the readers to understand the general life stories of the novel. They sometimes  insert some quotation or citation to complete  or support their works. In line with that, Grice (2002) notices when people communicate in daily conversations, they often make their literal expression implied. Thus, the researcher found that a case of creating implicature by flouting maxims in spoken quotation words is used by the main characters in 5CM novel. This research was conducted to answer two research problems ; (1) What are the types of flouted maxim found in spoken quotation  used by the main characters of 5CM novel?; (2) What are the implied meanings of flouted maxims found  in spoken quotation used by the main characters of 5CM  novel?. Those research problems had purposes to find out the types of flouting maxims and to describe the implied meanings of flouted maxims found  in spoken quotation used by the main characters of  5CM  novel.A descriptive qualitative method is used because the data are in the form of words which are explained descriptively and briefly by using Grice’s theory of implicature. The data are the main characters’ spoken quotation words that consist of twenty quotations. It was taken from Doni Dhirgantara’s 5CM novel. After the data were identified and analyzed, the reseracher finds that there are flouted maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. In this novel, the quotation which flout maxim of quality is absurd. Meanwhile, the contribution of maxim of quantity is overinformative. Flouting maxim of relevance happens when the speaker makes unrelated quotation with the topic being discussed. The flouting maxim of manner occurs when the speaker says too long winded that is ambigous. Then, the researcher also finds that the implied meanings behind flouted maxim are convincing something, expressing feeling and conditions, clarifying something and hiding feeling. Finally, it is suggested that this research will be one of additional references in the filed of Pragmatics. In addition, the next future researchers can study implicature more complete by using different subject and theory. Keywords: conversational implicature , flouting maxims, quotation words

Women in the media are often shown in a negative through the potrayal displayed in public spaces. In the mass media, the analysis of the potrayal of women in the mainstream media and the creation of alternatives to the feminist view of women in the media became an important project in feminist theory. Potrayal of women in the media are called feminists as a major source for the production of patriarchal social relations in general. In this study, beer advertisements at the beginning and the end of 1930 was chosen to see the changes in Japan's potrayal of women in the mass media. Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory is used to dissect the advertising of the socio-historical, which is an essential element for the writer to find a change of potrayal in the ad. Through the five stages of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory, namely dialogue with the reader, the author reveals his interpretation of the advertisement is based on feminism and women's point of view in the media. The results revealed that of the four studied advertisements, two ads from early 1930s and two advertisements from the late 1930s showed a change in the potrayal of women. Such changes appear not only on how women appear physically, ie with minimal clothing and erotic, but also of the role of women themselves. The role of women in these advertisements in the late 1930s is much better than the role of women featured in advertisements in the early 1930s.In addition, for further research suggested that Japanese learners more critical of the advertisements in the Japanese media, the advertisements that appear in the mass media show women potrayals to a certain extent. Keywords: Japanese beer advertisements, hermeneutic, feminism, women in the medi

This research tries to reveal the types of translation shifts found in the subtitles of The Hunger Games and what might influence the translator of the subtitles of The Hunger Games to do shifting. This research is a qualitative research and the method used is content or document analysis. The writer uses both the English subtitle and the Indonesian subtitle in order to know what kinds of translation shifts found there. The category shift with the most occurrence is the unit or rank shift, and the category shift with the least occurrence is the class shift. Mostly, the translator does the shift since every language has its own grammar, rules and systems. The structures differ, especially for languages that come from different family of language such as English and Indonesian. Those differences can create a gap and it should be bridged by the translator by doing shift in order to avoid the unnaturalness in translation. Keywords : translation, shift, subtitles

In their campaign, the presidential candidates all over the world always use certain slogans which show their vision and mission if they are running for Presidential Candidates and also to persuade the voters of the country to give their vote in the presidential Election Day. The researcher wanted to analyze the structure on the campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America from 1992 until 2012 since it affected the people in the country in deciding which candidates to choose. The researcher conducted this research to find out the transformational grammars on campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America. Therefore, the researcher used qualitative approach in this research in which the primary instrument is the researcher herself to collect the data and analyze the data. The data of this research were 10 campaign slogans from the elected president from 1992 to 2012. The data were taken from www.presidentsusa.net.The researcher found that the transformational grammars that were dominantly used on campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America were imperative transformation which used Imp + you + will + VP => VP as the rule of the tree diagram and emphatic transformation which used Emph + X + tense + *í°´*í±¢*í±¥ 1*í±*í±’Â + Y => X + tense + *í°´*í±¢*í±¥1*í±*í±’Â + Y as the rule of the tree diagram, both of the rules were written by Bornstein, 1977.She also has suggestion for the next researcher to use the theory of functional grammar since campaign slogans had a hidden meaning and the structures which were used in the campaign slogans had the different function in convincing the hearers and the readers. Keywords: tree diagram, transformational grammar, campaign slogans

Existentialism proposes the idea that human being has to define his own life. Existentialism as a universal element in all thinking is the attempt of man to describe his existence and its conflicts. Human is said to have existential crisis when he is filled with the question of what is his true essence as a human being in the contemporary world. This problem however is able to encourage him to seek for the solution. Since each individual has his own way to solve his problem, this study analyzes the effort of facing existential crisis in Aleph, an autobiographical novel by Paulo Coelho which manifests his theosophical perspective. Related to this case, this study aims to describe the portrayal of Coelho’s existential crisis and to analyze the portrayal of Coelho’s theosophical perspective as part of the process of gaining self- discovery. This study uses qualitative approach particularly literary study to analyze phenomena related with the problem in the novel. This study reveals that Aleph portrays Coelho’s existential crisis and theosophical perspective and also the manifestation of the interrelated ideas between existentialism and theosophy by taking the similar concepts which cover the importance of self- awareness, to act, and the aim to achieve something that can improve one’s quality of being an authentic human. It is suggested that the next researchers to do deeper study and analysis in connection with existentialism and to relate this philosophy to biographical studies in order to broaden the critical analysis about the relationship between existentialism and the author’s biography.  Keywords: Theosophy, Self- Discovery, Existential Crisis, Paulo Coelho, AlephÂ

People as social humans need a language to communicate with others. They need it since language is a device for communication. In society, language isremarkably varied. One of the varieties of language is register. Register is alanguage used in particular field, profession, and situation. The language offootball commentary, pimp, and radio broadcaster are considered as examples ofregister language. The study of register can be conducted from many aspects suchas, the vocabulary, syntactic features, phonology characteristics, register variable, etc. In this study, the researcher conducted the register used in live text footballcommentary on Euro 2012 final football match between Spain and Italy. There arethree problems of the study which were proposed: (1) What the registers are usedin live text commentary, (2) What the meanings of registers are used in live textcommentary, (3) What the linguistic features of register are used in live textcommentary on Euro 2012 final football match between Spain and Italy.  This study used qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear andsystematic description about the phenomena being studied. The data were onlytaken from live text commentaries which were uploaded on BBC sport website.  This study revealed that the registers used in live text commentarycommonly have different meaning when it relates to other field, profession andsituation. Some registers are unfamiliar words which do not exist in other fieldoutside the football. This study also revealed that live text football commentaryusually uses features such as, syntactic reduction and passive voice. From bothfeatures, the commentator uses the syntactic reduction more frequently. Thereduction and passive voice are not due to the insufficient competence of thecommentator. Nevertheless, there are some reasons behind such as, to build extraspeed in delivering the event. The researcher suggests the English Department students conduct thedeeper study about register since this study did not cover all aspects of registeryet. He also hopes that the next researcher will conduct the comparison studyabout register used in live text commentary with that used in live oralcommentary. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Register, Live text commentar

Communication is a process of giving understanding to the hearer aboutwhat is meant by the speaker. As stated by Raymond S. Ross (1983) as cited inMulyana (2004, p.62) that communication is a process in choosing and sendingsymbols by the speaker to be understood by the hearer. One of media which ismostly  used to communicate is messenger. LINE messenger is one of the newinstant messaging applications used by society. In this study, the writer conductsthe semiotics analysis of the stickers’ expressions in LINE messenger. There arethree problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) Which stickers’ expressionsof each character are frequently used by the members of group FIB BersemiKembali in LINE messenger, (2) What are the meanings of the stickers’expressions of each character which are frequently used by the members of groupFIB Bersemi Kembali in LINE messenger, and (3) To what extent those stickers’expressions of each character support the users’ messages. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach since the writer analysesthe visual picture as signifiers and the concept of meanings as signified as thedata. The analysis is included to document analysis because the data are takenfrom the stickers’ expressions in LINE messenger.  The analysis aims to answer the problems of the study. In the analysis, thedata were analyzed based on Peirce’s triadic model of sign which consists ofrepresentamen, interpretant, and object. Moreover to support interpreting thestickers, the writer also uses the theory of colors based on theory of colors by Gonet al (2005), Morton (2000), and Smith (2013). This study reveals that Moon’s expressions which are frequently used bythe member of group FIB Bersemi Kembali are the expression number 4, 12, 15,and 2. James’ expressions which are frequently used are number 24, 18, 44, and17. Brown’s expressions which are frequently used are number 16, 13, 22, and 17.Meanwhile, Cony’s expressions which are frequently used are number 36, 16, 21,and 14. There are some elements to build the interpretation toward the stickers’expressions. They are colors, lines, dots, gestures and accessories of eachexpression. The stickers’ expressions also support the user’s messages since thewriter finds that the stickers’ expressions are multi-interpreted and can be used insome contexts of conversations. The writer suggests  the next researchers to broaden the semiotics scope inanalysing the stickers’ expressions by using other theories. Moreover, the writeralso suggests the next researchers to analyze other stickers’ expressions in LINEmessenger aside from those top four stickers’ expressions of each character whichhave been analyzed by the writer. Keywords: semiotics, Peirce’s triadic model of sign, LINE messenger, sticker, stickers’ expression
