CONSTRUCTION OF MEANING IN RADEN SAPU JAGAD RITUAL IN KAWI MOUNTAIN
Keywords: Raden Sapu Jagad Ritual, Mukso, Premonition Raden Sapu Jagad is the nobleman who is very religious and has highest levelof supranatural ability. Raden Sapu Jagad had experienced Mukso or the ability to live in 2 worlds. Because of that, until now there are a lot of people believe that Raden Sapu Jagad still alive around Kawi Mountain. The people believe if they can conduct inner interaction with him, they can get some premonitions to increase their jobs degree. However, only unmarried women/ single female can perform this ritual directly. The writer wants to uncover this phenomenon deeper about the construction of meaning Raden Sapu Jagad ritual process.This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear andsystematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study inobservation and open interview with ritual expert and the performer of this ritual is applied in this study to analyze the meaning of ritual procession and about women’s role in this ritual.This study reveals that all the meaning of ritual procession have correlationswith women’s role in this ritual. Women considered as a holy creatures and lofty one who is proper to get some premonitions from Raden Sapu Jagad. This phenomenon becomes stronger because of folk-belief theory. That is about belief concept that influences to validate the data of this research which is talking about supernatural in ritual.The writer suggests English Department students learn more about socialculture concepts that exist in our environments. The writer also suggests the next researcher conduct their analysis about cultural phenomenon and try to link up with literary works
COMMISSIVE AND DIRECTIVE ACTS PERFORMED BY DAVID CAMERON IN HIS DAVOS SPEECH
Keywords: Pragmatics, Commissive and Directive Acts, Davos Speech, David   Cameron. Pragmatics can be defined as a study talking about the relationship between language and context. It covers commissive and directive acts as the kinds of speech act. Commissive acts are acts that commit the speaker to some future course of action. While directive acts are acts that attempt by the speaker to get the addressee to do something. The writer takes a speech that David Cameron has delivered in the World of Economic Forum (WEF) as the object of data. This study is aimed to know the types of commissive acts and also the types of directive acts performed by David Cameron in his Davos speech.This study uses qualitative approach to find out the answers of the problems. In collecting the data the writer had two steps, they are downloading the video and also the script, after that selecting the utterances which are the case of commissive and directive acts. The writer had four steps in analyzing the data, firstly, listing the selected utterances and putting it into table, secondly, identifying the type of selected utterances, then analyzing and discussing the data based on the theory proposed by Searle (1983), and the last is concluding the result of the data analysis.This study reveals that commissive acts are applied by the speaker in 25 utterances containing promising (17 utterances), warning (5 utterances), offering (1 utterance), and threatening (1 utterance). The directive acts are applied in 32 utterances containing suggesting (11 utterances), questioning (3 utterances), commanding (8 utterances), and requesting (10 utterances). Based on the finding it is known that David Cameron applied promising which is a kind of commissive acts in 17 utterances. Such a kind of commissive acts is mostly used by David Cameron in his Davos speech in order to promise the audiences about what he will do in the future. He also applied suggesting in 11 utterances which is a kind of directive acts. Such a kind of directive acts is mostly used by David Cameron in his Davos speech in order to advise the audiences because there are so many problems that G8 faced at that time so that the speaker tried to give solutions for them.The next researcher who will conduct the similar study in case of commissive and directive acts are suggested to find other objects to be analyzed like newspaper, advertisement, TV program, etc. They are also expected to conduct studies which involve other kinds of speech act such as representative, expressive, performative, and assertive acts, since those four types have not been studied by the writer
ERROR ANALYSIS ON ENGLISH VOWEL SOUND PRODUCTION MADE BY THE SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF STUDY PROGRAM OF ENGLISH UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA

Therefore, the pronunciation produced is still often incorrect and this might affect the meaning. It οccured because sοme sοurces οf errοrs affect the learners.Thereby, the researcher conducted the research about Error Analysis on English Vowel Sound Production that is aimed to investigate: (1) the οccurence οf the most frequent errors and (2) and the sοurces οf errοrs made by the sixth semester students οf Study Prοgram οf English, Universitas Brawijaya.This research used qualitative apprοach because the researcher used dοcument analysis and semi-structured interview in οbtaining the data. The samples chοsen were 25 students frοm the sixth semester οf Study Prοgram οf English. The researcher identified the errors and classified sources οf errοrs in analyzing the data.The researcher identified 25 as the most frequent errors and then classified them intο 3 sοurces οf errοrs related to Ramelan’s (1985) theory. The result οf analysÑ–s shοwed that there were 7 dοminant errors out of 12 English vowels errοrs during the test was going on. The researcher provided those in percentage like: [Ç] 30%, [iË] 28%, [uË] 13%, [ÊŒ] 12%, [É”Ë] 11%, [ÉœË] and [É‘Ë] 3%. It can be concluded that the reason why the learners are still difficult to pronounce English vowels is because they still involve their Indonesian phonetic sound system rules during learning English. The researcher suggests the further researchers to conduct new research on spoken language about Error Analysis in pronunciation with different object taken, for example, Error Analysis on consonant
MIMICRY AND AMBIVALENCE AS MANIFESTED IN BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM MOVIE
Keywords: postcolonialism, mimicry, ambivalency  British colonialism in India made the Indian society struggle to reach their independence. After had got independence on August 15, 1947 many Indian people did migration to Britain. The effect of Indians migration to British country has created technical term of India diaspora. Diaspora in Britain made British identity become heterogeneous in homogeneous in the reality and cinema. Diaspora also has created the problems of multiculturalism, hibridity, mimicry and ambivalence. This research is about the searching for manifestation of mimicry and ambivalence which is manifested in Bend It Like Beckham movie as the movie that tells about the problem of diaspora.This study uses a qualitative research employing two concepts, namely mimicry and ambivalence with postcolonialism approach. The analysis is based on the literal facts found in Bend It Like Beckham movie and supported by those concepts.The results show that in Bend It Like Beckham movie there are manifestations of mimicry and ambivalence. Mimicry happens in the cultural aspects of society that is manifested in language, games, fashion, cuisine, and lifestyle. Mimicry also happens in the cultural aspects of art that can be seen in fashion. While The manifestations of ambivalence happen in cultural aspects of society such as in language, cuisine, game and lifestyle.By using the same material object, the writer suggests to the next researcher to use Feminism, because Bend It Like Beckham also talks about the struggle of women to reach her dream as a woman football player
ABSURDITAS DALAM DIALOG ANTARTOKOH NASKAH DRAMA LES BONNES KARYA JEAN GENET MELALUI PELANGGARAN MAKSIM KUANTITAS DAN RELEVANSI
Kata Kunci : pragmatik, pelanggaran maksim kuantitas, pelanggaran maksimrelevansi, konteks, implikatur.Salah satu bentuk penggunaan bahasa sebagai alat komunikasi adalah dialog dalam drama yang menjadi kunci utama untuk menjabarkan tokoh dan penokohan, alur dan latar. Berbeda dengan aliran drama lain, ciri khas drama absurd adalah adanya ketidakjelasan dan ketidaksinambungan dalam dialog antartokohnya. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menganalisis dialog antartokoh dalam drama absurd Les Bonnes karya Jean Genet dengan fokus pada pelanggaran maksim kuantitas dan relevansi dalam prinsip kerja sama Grice. Adapun latar belakang terjadinya pelanggaran maksim dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori konteks McManis yang meliputi konteks fisik, epistemik, linguistik dan sosial dan teori implikatur yang juga digunakan untuk menganalisis pengaruh pelanggaran terhadap keberlangsungan dialog.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang dimulai dari pengumpulan data, analisis data yang dipaparkan secara deskriptif hingga penarikan kesimpulan.Setelah dilakukan pengumpulan data, terhimpun 54 data yang menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pelanggaran maksim kuantitas, maksim relevansi dan kedua maksim tersebut. Latar belakang terjadinya pelanggaran tersebut dapat dianalisis melalui konteks pembicaraan atau adanya tujuan tertentu seperti menjelaskan sesuatu, berpendapat, mempengaruhi ataupun meminta pada lawan tuturnya. Sebagian besar pelanggaran maksim dalam drama Les Bonnes tidak menghambat jalannya dialog antartokoh karena lawan tutur menangkap pesan tersirat dari penutur, mengalihkan topik pembicaraan atau melanggar maksim untuk menanggapi pelanggaran maksim atau karena adanya adegan yang dilakukan penutur atau lawan tutur untuk menanggapi ujaran yang melanggar maksim. Jean Genet berhasil menampilkan kesan absurd dengan tidak sengaja melanggar maksim kuantitas dan relevansi yang berdampak pada terhambatnya dialog atau pengalihan topik pembicaraan dalam naskah drama Les Bonnes. Ketidakjelasan ini menunjukkan bahwa karya tersebut tergolong dalam kategori drama absurd
POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SHERLOCK HOLMES A GAME OF SHADOW MOVIE
Keywords: Face Threatening Act (FTA), Politeness StrategiesThis study is about FTA and politeness strategies performed by Holmes as the main character in Sherlock Holmes, “A Game of Shadow†movie. The objectives are to find out the types of face threatening act and politeness strategies performed by Holmes when he is having conversation with his interlocutors.This study was classified as a qualitative research and categorized into document analysis because it analyzed the script and conversations performed by Holmes on Sherlock Holmes, “A Game of Shadow†movie.From the result of analysis, the main character of movie entitled Sherlock Holmes, ‘A Game of Shadow’ named Sherlock Holmes performed face threatening acts (FTAs) in his utterances based on the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The writer found 111 utterances of Sherlock Holmes containing Face-Threatening Acts. By paying attention to the face being threatened, negative face ranked the first for 86 times and positive face ranked the second for 25 times. In performing FTA, the speaker intended to use strategies to mitigate the damage to the hearers. Holmes intended to maintain good relationship with others and did not want to impinge the hearers. Based on the data, the kinds of FTA strategies performed by Holmes are 44 negative politeness, 40 positive politeness, 18 bald on-record, and 14 off-record. Therefore, Holmes mostly performed negative politeness strategy in his conversation.Further study about politeness can be carried out to find out the factor influencing the choice of each strategy of politeness. Because politeness is very important in interaction, the writer hopes that the readers can learn more about it and explore it in the diverse culture of Indonesian ethnic group
COHESION DEVICES ON THE LYRICS OF BOB MARLEY’S SONGS
Keywords: Cohesion, Cohesion Devices, Lyric, Bob Marley. This study is about cohesion devices found in the lyrics of Bob Marley’s songs. The objectives are to reveal the kinds of grammatical and lexical cohesion used in the lyrics of Bob Marley’s songs.In conducting this study, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method, because the data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The data of this study is taken form the lyrics of five Bob Marley’s songs, they are: Get Up, Stand Up, One Love, Redemption Song, War, Revolution. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses Halliday and Hasan’s theory to find the kinds of grammatical cohesion and Renkema’s theory to find the kinds of lexical cohesion.The result of this study shows the type of grammatical cohesion which mostly appeared are demonstrative and personal reference, while lexical cohesion which is mostly used is repetition Both cohesion devices have different function.The researcher suggests English learners to consider the usage of cohesion devices for practicing writing and speaking in order to increase their writing andspeaking skills. The suggestion for the lecturers to enrich their teaching materials by using this study as reference and the researcher also suggests the next researcher to take the data from written text to ease the research and conduct a more detailed and deeper analysis by comparing and combining this research with another research
LEARNED HELPLESSNESS ENCOUNTERED BY MICHAEL OHER IN THE BLIND SIDE MOVIE

Behavior is really important in a person’s life especially in social context. Disturbances in family functioning, such as parental depression, severe marital conflict or divorce, death of a parent, or other disturbances are external factors that preserve abnormal behavior. Those conditions then form a person’s perspective of social behavior that the person preserves to be acceptable. Some of them who cannot fulfill the standards in very often case lead into learned helplessness. The Blind Side is one of the movies that show learned helplessness as an abnormal behavior. This movie was written and directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alcon Entertainment and released by Warner Bros in 2009, based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. The Blind Side was a box-office success  in 2009.The film itself also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.   The writer use social psychological  approach by applying  psychological theory which is combined with social behavior  theory. In analyzing, the writer makes the main  characters in the movie which is Michael Oher as the  focus of research in order to reveal the helplessness in his life.  Result of this thesis shows that,  the helplessness encountered by Michael Oher triggered by continuity depressions by external factors.  The inability to control the situation combined with depressions make him learned helplessness
ANALISIS PERBEDAAN PENGGUNAAN BENTUK TARA, BA, DAN TO DALAM MAJALAH NIPPONIA TAHUN 2001-2006 EDISI NO. 17, 24, 25, 27, 29, 32, 34, 36

Therefore, it should be have a different when we use it. Therefore, the writer conducted a study about differencethe use of particle tara, ba, and to in Nipponia Magazine. Nipponia Magazine is aJapanese Magazine who have many article about Japan. There are a problem to be solved the study, namely what difference the use of tara, ba, and to particle in Nipponia Magazine?This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the sentences in Nipponia Magazine.This study reveals that there are 7 tara particle, 17 ba particle, and 20 to particle. About the sentences, the writer found that there are difference about tara, ba, and to particle when we use it. The difference is tara particle is used to express a supposition which assumed its activities have been done, whereas baparticle is used to expressing modality in which the activity has not been done,and to particle is used to declare a natural relationship or facts. In subordinateclause also have a different that tara and ba subordinate clause express a sentence orders, advice, or call. Whereas to particle didn’t express it in subordinate clause.The writer suggests Japanese Department students learn more about modality, and using another particle to compare it
KRITIK ATAS KLAIM HUMANISME DALAM NOVEL KEMBANG KAMBOJA KARYA ABE TOMOJI
Kata Kunci: Kembang Kamboja, Klaim, Humanisme, Propaganda, Sejarahpendudukan Jepang di Indonesia Kembang Kamboja ditulis Abe Tomoji yang menceritakan pengalamannya selama berada di Jawa. Karya tersebut dianggap sebagai karya dengan tema humanis. Kontradiksi terjadi ketika unsur humanisme dalam Kembang Kamboja ditinjau dari sudut pandang bangsa Indonesia yang dijajah oleh Jepang. Penulis ingin meneliti tentang apakah wacana humanisme dalam novel Kembang Kamboja relevan dengan keadaan masyarakat Indonesia pada masa pendudukan Jepang.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan New Historicism yang mengacu pada kajian wacana dan kekuasaan sehingga penulis bisa menempatkan Kembang Kamboja sebagai bagian dari sejarah pendudukan Jepang di Indonesia dan menemukan korelasinya dengan kekuasaan pada saat itu. Dengan teori ini, penulis bisa mendapatkan data dari berbagai media untuk mendapatkan fakta-fakta sejarah yang akurat.Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa humanisme dalam Kembang Kamboja adalah sebuah klaim karena aspek kajiannya hanya berdasar stigma pada pengarangnya, unsur intrinsik yang membangunnya dan dari satu kajian sastradengan sebutan sastra Avant Garde. Karena berposisi sebagai artefak sejarah pendudukan Jepang, Kembang Kamboja adalah produk propaganda dimana setiap karya dikontrol oleh kekuasaan untuk mendoktrin bahwa pendudukannya di Indonesia dianggap hal yang wajar. Klaim humanisme pada Kembang Kamboja tidak memperlihatkan sebuah analisis penalaran keadaan sosial secara lebih objektif. Sehingga menghasilkan ketimpangan humanisme yang hanya pada tataran definitif, dari iringan alur cerita dan konflik batin pengarang. Jauh dari idelanya humanisme yang dibicarakan sebagai realita kemanusiaan yang komperenhensif. Klaim humanisme mengacu pada relevansinya saat pendudukan Jepang di Indonesia, adalah sebuah klaim pseudo humanis.Penulis menyarankan penelitian selanjutnya, meneliti novel Kembang Kamboja dari segi instrinsik dengan kajian post-strukturalisme, yang lebih menggunakan pendekatan dekonstruksi Jaques Derrida. sehingga perspektif baru dari novel Kembang Kamboja dapat terbuk
