High Accurate Rephotographic Image Registration by Attention Masks :Enabling Intention-Driven Rephotographic Image Registration With Interactive Areas of Interest Masks

    No full text
Embarking on the journey of rephotography, capturing a contemporary image from the vantage point of a historical counterpart and registering them, is a formidable challenge. Traditional automated registration methods stumble in the face of this task, while manual methods, reliant upon painstakingly identified corresponding points, demand an investment of time, precision, and expertise. Often, only image fragments can be seamlessly registered due to changes in the scene, like new and removed buildings. Determining the areas of interest (AOI) for registration becomes a critical decision, placing users in the process’s role as curators. This work proposes a new method combining state-of-the-art automatic deep learning-based registration methods with user-provided masks. Users draw masks around the AOI they want to register and exclude non-indented AOI from registration. Using AOI masks reduces the required time, painstaking identification of corresponding points, and knowledge needed for manual registration while giving the user control over the registration process by providing an intuitive way to embed which AOI is vital to register. This interactive method achieves excellent registration quality and positive user feedback compared to regular automated image registration methods. It can not replace manual registration completely. However, for many rephotography tasks, it significantly reduces the required effort. The deep learning-based automatic method already achieves a high acceptance rate—i.e., a score of at least 4 out of 5—of 55%, which is a considerable improvement to standard automatic registration method with an acceptance rate of 12%. With the interactive AOI masks method, which combines user-drawn masks with the automatic deep learning-based method, the acceptance rate increases to 60% and is almost as good as manual registration with a rate of 65%

Sustainable catering as part of living lab research in Germany : What are the opportunities and barriers?

Global food production has critical impacts on ecosystems, climate change and planetary boundaries. The Out-of- Home Catering sector (OOH) is the second most important distribution channel for the food industry in Germany. OOH businesses form a link between production (food production) and consumption (consumption by guests) and are therefore an important area for real-world laboratory research. The aim of this study is to evaluate environmental impact of OOH businesses (n=4) show the chances and limitations in the transformation towards a sustainable OOH. For this purpose, weekly menus for lunch as well as the selection for breakfast and dinner will be assessed for their environmental impact by Life Cycle Assessment. Subsequently, in co-creation with the companies, an environmentally friendly target state will be worked on. Adjustments will be made to show how sustainable full catering can be achieved in the OOH. The work focuses on the recipe, menu and management level. Initial results show that breakfast and dinner menus in particular have a high animal product content and potential for improvement. This can be achieved mainly by changing the options available to customers. The first step in the companies' lunch menus is to replace or reduce resource-intensive ingredients

The need to (climate) adapt : perceptions of German sports event planners on the imperative to address climate change

Introduction: While the impact of anthropogenic climate change on sports and the subsequent need for adaptation to evolving climatic conditions are acknowledged, there remains a notable paucity of scientific inquiry within the realm of sports and sports event studies specifically addressing climate change and its ramifications for event planning and management. Existing studies predominantly stem from health, medical, weather and climate science and mostly focus on mega-events and elite athlete contexts. Moreover, they often only focus on one specific impact (e.g., extreme heat) without providing a comprehensive summary or overview of all eminent impacts, resulting risks and potential adaptation strategies. This study aims to explore how (German) sports events are impacted by climate change and identify measures for organizers to address these impacts. Methods: Following a comprehensive literature review, semi-structured interviews with event planners and organizers in Germany were conducted, ranging from small local events to weekly league competitions to national championships and major events. Results: The findings demonstrate that climate change adaptation is not yet a primary focus in the German sports event context. While some planners, especially those of large-scale events, have started implementing adaptation measures, others are only beginning to address the issue. Discussion: The study discusses the challenges that sports event organizers face in adjusting to the adverse effects of climate change and also examines specific adaptation strategies. The paper emphasizes the imperative for organizers to incorporate climate adaptation measures more effectively into routine event planning and management processes, and provides practical guidelines to achieve this integration
