En Route : Student Mobility, Housing Choices and Online Teaching : Investigating current Dynamics in (digitized) Higher Education
Education-related travel accounts for 7% of all journeys in Germany (Nobis and Kuhnimhof, 2019). At Higher Education Institutions (HEI), student and staff mobility significantly contributes to overall CO2 emissions, with studies reporting shares of up to 91% (Helmers, Chang and Dauwels, 2021). Thus, both urban planners and HEIs are actively seeking effective policies for sustainable educational mobility to harness environmental, social, and health benefits (Delmelle and Delmelle, 2012).
In this context, online education emerges as a promising solution to avoid traffic. Similar to remote work models like home office, online education facilitates location-independent learning processes, potentially providing university students with more flexible study programs and greater freedom in choosing their place of residence, while reducing travel-related CO2 emissions and individual costs. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the feasibility of moving significant parts of HEI operations online, challenging the necessity for physical presence and commuting. Consequently, there have been calls to increase the share of online education as an effective strategy for sustainable mobility at HEIs (e.g., Versteijlen, van Wee and Wals, 2021).
However, some researchers come to a different conclusion. They imply that while online education may lead to an overall decrease in total commutes, there could be a simultaneous increase in the average commuting distance. Additionally, a shift towards less sustainable modes of transportation may occur as students relocate from urban centers to more peripheral areas with limited mobility options (e.g., O’Brien and Aliabadi, 2020).
Our submission contributes to this discussion by presenting new evidence from the EN ROUTE research project at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (HSOS), which investigates strategies to enhance the sustainability of university-related travel. Building on data from an online survey conducted among students attending the HSOS (n = 1057), we examine university-related mobility patterns of students in a mid-sized German city in relation to their residential locations and explore potential effects of online education. Particularly, we focus on three key aspects:
• How does university-related travel at HSOS look today?
• How is it related to questions of students‘ housing and transport infrastructure?
• How might mobility and housing patterns change in the wake of online education and how will this affect settlement structures?
The results highlight strong connections between aspects of mobility, housing and studying. Promoting sustainable mobility in digitized higher education is highly complex due to observable tensions between various environmental and social factors. In addition, the heterogeneity of students leads to a range of possible responses and reactions regarding mobility and housing patterns. While online education undoubtedly has great transformative potential, we advocate for a realistic assessment of its ecological value, including a detailed examination of potential rebound effects
Concept and Realisation of ISFET-Based Measurement Modules for Infield Soil Nutrient Analysis and Hydroponic Systems
Ion-selective field-effect transistors (ISFETs) offer potential as micro-sensors for in situ monitoring of complex target variables in real-time closed loop actions. This article presents the concept and realisation of application-specific ISFET-based measurement systems for two different agricultural domains: infield soil measurements and hydroponic systems. Commercially available ISFETs were integrated as multi-sensor modules as well as single-sensor units for the measurement of plant-available nutrients, such as H PO , NO , K or NH , and pH-values. Moreover, application-relevant pH values as well as temperatures for calibration purposes were measured. ISFETs were selected according to the relevant measurement dynamics for the applications. For the development and testing procedures, a laboratory setup was built up. Supported by reference materials, the outputs of the ISFETs were evaluated with respect to stability under the influence of disturbance variables, reproducibility and settling time. The results were used to develop new readout electronics. Next to stability, conditioning and calibration processes were relevant. The micro-sensors were integrated in new application-specific mechatronic handling systems and process flows. The realisation and tests are presented as well as first measurements in outdoor fields and indoor hydroponic environments
Is Gamification a Suitable Means to Improve Applicant Reactions and Convey Information During an Online Test?
This study examined whether gamification of a computer-based cognitive ability test can positively influence applicant reactions. The gamification used a job-related storyline, avatars, and information games that were designed not only to increase enjoyment but also to convey information about the job. 212 participants completed either the gamified or the non-gamified test and answered questions concerning applicant reactions. The results showed that gamification can be used to playfully provide information about the organization and job during an assessment and, thus, can enhance perceived clarity about what to expect in a job. Additionally, the gamified assessment was rated higher on opportunity to perform compared to its traditional version, while no differences were found between the two tests for fairness, job relatedness, and enjoyment

Kolumne Wirtschaftspsychologie
The article illuminates the construction principles of a didactics of the vocational field of agricultural economics as well as its lines of reasoning. After the presentation of the structure and the development of the vocational field and the specialization, didacticmethodical approaches in and for teaching at vocational schools are discussed, as well as the didactic training of future teachers along the valid regulations. One focus of the article is the consideration of approaches to higher education didactics that are particularly suitable for the professional field. In this context, it is emphasized that the “double practical relevance” has an outstanding position and that the aspect of “action orientation” also plays an important role in the academic education of teachers. The article concludes with a summary of central aspects and a look at vocational didactic research in the field of agricultural economics
In Germany, 80% of people in need of long-term care are cared for at home. 56% of them are cared for exclusively by informal caregivers who provide care to them in the context of a social relationship. The number of home-care arrangements has been rising continuously for years, while existing outpatient services are at their capacity limits. To contribute to a better understanding of care in the home setting, 16 narrative interviews on images and reality of home care with persons in need of care and those providing care as well as two interviews with experts were conducted and analyzed using grounded theory. The resulting acceptance theory offers a basic explanation of informal care and points to the urgent and indispensable need to further develop outpatient care structures if care arrangements are to continue to exist in large numbers
