Analysing the Techno-Economic Viability of Different Solar Heating Systems in South African Beverage Plants

    No full text
With ongoing real-term reductions in the cost of renewable energy technologies, opportunities to reduce carbon emissions within industry have improved. While the South African industrial sector has been investing in photovoltaics to meet electricity requirements, little has been done to replace fossil fuels used for the generation of process heat, representing two-thirds of the energy consumed. While previous studies have demonstrated the benefits and limitations of solar thermal (ST) energy solutions for industrial applications, recent developments in high-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) offer opportunities for novel configurations, including the use of renewable energy like photovoltaics (PV). This study compares the techno-economic benefits of solar thermal energy systems with PV-supported HTHP systems within the South African beverage sector. After a general consideration, simulation calculations are presented for selected applications. The cost of heat is determined for PV-heat pump systems operating on a stand-alone basis and with heat storage. The study finds that the levelised cost of heat of US$0.050-0.073/kWhth is at least twice that of coal-fired steam boilers. The study, therefore, calls for further work on optimising systems minimising steam requirements, and thereby improving the economics of heat pumps and for a coordinated effort to support the development and financing of high-temperature heat pumps for industrial applications

Exploratory Testing for Safety-Critical Large-Scale Embedded Systems Such as Spacecrafts

    No full text
Exploratory testing (ET) has been introduced in the academic world as an agile testing methodology. It has so far been considered in the context of several types of software systems, but there is a lack of scientific foundation, when ET is applied to safety-critical large-scale embedded systems. We show that safety-critical large-scale embedded systems possess properties that are quite different to pure software systems - with regard to among others the user interface, involved hardware, environmental influences and the role of software safety standards. ET relies on the notion of tours. Some of the existing tours are described and their relevance for safety-critical large-scale embedded systems is discussed. The main contribution of this paper is the theoretical preparation of empirical work on ET tours applied to safety-critical large-scale embedded systems. Throughout this paper spacecrafts serve as the example of choice

Classifying Stand Compositions in Clover Grass Based on High-Resolution Multispectral UAV Images

    No full text
In organic farming, clover is an important basis for green manure in crop rotation systems due to its nitrogen-fixing effect. However, clover is often sown in mixtures with grass to achieve a yield-increasing effect. In order to determine the quantity and distribution of clover and its influence on the subsequent crops, clover plants must be identified at the individual plant level and spatially differentiated from grass plants. In practice, this is usually done by visual estimation or extensive field sampling. High-resolution unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a more efficient alternative. In the present study, clover and grass plants were classified based on spectral information from high-resolution UAV multispectral images and texture features using a random forest classifier. Three different timestamps were observed in order to depict the phenological development of clover and grass distributions. To reduce data redundancy and processing time, relevant texture features were selected based on a wrapper analysis and combined with the original bands. Including these texture features, a significant improvement in classification accuracy of up to 8% was achieved compared to a classification based on the original bands only. Depending on the phenological stage observed, this resulted in overall accuracies between 86% and 91%. Subsequently, high-resolution UAV imagery data allow for precise management recommendations for precision agriculture with site-specific fertilization measures
