Integration of the Food Supply Chain as a Driver of Sustainability : A Conceptual Framework
This paper presents a conceptual framework aimed at exploring the connections between integration within the food supply chain and the three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social. The analysis combines theoretical insights with empirical research, specifically focusing on the economic aspect of sustainability, measured through efficiency. The study emphasizes the critical role of integrating participants across the food supply chain to achieve sustainability goals. It discusses methodologies for assessing integration levels within the chain, providing a theoretical and analytical basis for modeling integration and efficiency within the supply chain. To empirically validate these relationships, an extended stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) method was applied to selected sectors within the food processing industry. The results demonstrate that enhancing integration with suppliers and buyers can significantly improve efficiency within the food chain. In conclusion, through deductive reasoning, this study asserts that integration plays a pivotal role in advancing economic sustainability objectives within the food sector. This framework contributes to a deeper understanding of how integration influences sustainability outcomes, offering valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to enhance sustainability in food systems
Augmented reality simulation-based training for midwifery students and its impact on perceived knowledge, confidence and skills for managing critical incidents
Problem
Emergency obstetric management is essential in midwifery training to prevent fetal and maternal morbidity. Repeating this management in practice is often not possible. Sustainable confidence in these procedures is usually achieved in the first few years of practice.
Background
Simulation training complements hands-on learning and improves practical skills, benefiting both students and patients. Research on obstetric emergency simulation training have demonstrated this, but the use of digital simulation approaches, such as augmented reality (AR), is under-researched.
Aim
To investigate whether AR simulation training influences midwifery students' subjective perceptions of knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations.
Methods
A descriptive exploratory study was conducted using a pre-post design. AR scenarios were developed on the topics of 'preparing emergency tocolysis', 'preparing a pregnant woman for caesarean section' and ‘resuscitation of newborns'. The AR simulation was conducted in the fourth to fifth semester of the midwifery programme. A questionnaire was developed for students (N = 133) to self-assess their competence in the categories of knowledge, confidence and practical skills.
Results
Students rated their competence significantly better in the post-survey than in the pre-survey (p=<0.05). Simulation has an impact on self-assessment of professional knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations. It enhances students' procedural knowledge and practical skills in complex contexts, complements subject knowledge and builds confidence.
Conclusion
The results provide initial evidence that AR simulation is an effective learning strategy for emergency management preparedness. Future studies should validate the effect with control cohorts and measure competence through practical examinations
Does combining oro‐facial manual therapy with bruxism neuroscience education affect pain and function in cases of awake bruxism? : A pilot study
Background
Although awake bruxism is associated with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) as well as head and neck pain, the effects of physical therapy and bruxism education to address these factors have not been investigated.
Objective
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oro-facial manual therapy and bruxism neuroscience education (BNE) on awake bruxism over a 3-week period with an open-ended follow-up questionnaire after 3 months.
Methods
Subjects (n = 28) were randomly allocated to one of two groups, an intervention group and a control group. Data regarding disability, function and pain were collected pre- and post-assessment, with all measures administered in a single-blind fashion. Participants in both groups received six treatment sessions during this period. In addition to manual therapy, participants were provided with information on the neurophysiological mechanisms of bruxism and contributing factors. Individual behavioural guidelines and daily exercises were determined in consultation with the therapist. An introduction to a bruxism specific app (Brux.App) was also provided, which all participants used as an adjunct to their treatment.
Results
The intervention group demonstrated notable improvement as indicated by their scores in the Neck Disability Index (NDI) (p = .008), Pain Disability Index (PDI) (p = .007) and Jaw Disability List (JDL) (p = .03). Furthermore, clinical assessments of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) revealed a significant progress in terms of mouth opening (p = .03) and lateral jaw movement (laterotrusion) (p = .03). The mechanical pain threshold (PTT) of both the masseter (p = .02) and temporalis muscle (p = .05) also showed significant improvement. At 3-month follow-up, the questionnaire revealed that the majority of the intervention group (13/15, 87%) reported a benefit from the treatment.
Conclusion
The reduction in pain and disability together with improvement in function and increased coping suggest a potential modification of awake bruxism through specialised musculoskeletal intervention and BNE tailored to the individual patient

Das ISK ist ein breit angelegtes, multidimensionales Selbstbeurteilungsinstrument, mit dem in umfassender Weise grundlegende soziale Kompetenzen abgebildet werden. Es werden »situationsübergreifende« (allgemeine) soziale Kompetenzen erfasst, welche in einer Vielzahl sozialer Situationen wirken und Bestandteil der Persönlichkeit eines Menschen sind. Das Verfahren liegt in einer Langform mit 108 Items (ISK) und einer Kurzform mit 33 Items (ISK-K) vor. Das ISK ist aus 17 Primärskalen aufgebaut, die sich zu vier Sekundärskalen gruppieren lassen: Soziale Orientierung (Prosozialität, Perspektivenübernahme, Wertepluralismus, Kompromissbereitschaft, Zuhören), Offensivität (Durchsetzungsfähigkeit, Konfliktbereitschaft, Extraversion, Entscheidungsfreudigkeit), Selbststeuerung (Selbstkontrolle, Emotionale Stabilität, Handlungsflexibilität, Internalität) sowie Reflexibilität (Selbstdarstellung, Direkte Selbstaufmerksamkeit, Indirekte Selbstaufmerksamkeit, Personenwahrnehmung). Die Kurzform ISK-K erfasst ausschließlich die vier Sekundärskalen, welche übergeordnete Kompetenzen widerspiegeln
Towards Objective Comparison of Security Algorithms for Resource-Constrained IoT Devices
Networked sensors are strategically deployed to gather real-world data, thereby facilitating the implementation of cutting-edge technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). These devices, tailored to specific use-cases, often operate under strict resource constraints and must function optimally for extended periods. Concurrently, the sensitive data they collect must be safeguarded against unauthorized access, necessitating robust security measures. A range of security mechanisms is available to IoT system designers, with cryptographic algorithms, such as symmetric and asymmetric encryption, and hash functions being the cornerstone. They can select from multiple algorithm implementations and adjust configuration parameters to suit the device’s capabilities. However, determining the ideal configuration is a complex task, requiring a balance between security effectiveness and efficient resource utilization. While the security aspect is continually assessed by experts, the impact of these choices on resource consumption, particularly across diverse platforms, often receives less attention. This paper introduces an objective evaluation method that assesses not only the effect of different security algorithms, but also various implementations and configuration adjustments on the resource consumption across different platforms. To facilitate this, a composite performance indicator is computed, enabling the systematic ranking of candidate configurations. The approach bridges the gap in understanding the interplay between security measures and resource management in the realm of IoT devices
Verbot und Ausschluss von der staatlichen Finanzierung auch für Teilorganisationen von Parteien Paradoxien und Anpassungsbedarf im BVerfGG
Die Diskussion um ein Parteiverbot ist begleitet von politischen Bedenken vor allem hinsichtlich eines Scheiterns, das bei einem Antrag gegen die Gesamtpartei zumindest nicht ausgeschlossen werden kann. Der Beitrag zeigt auf, dass bereits wenige Anpassungen im BVerfGG es ermöglichen sollten, dass ein Verbotsantrag auch hinsichtlich der Teilorganisation einer Partei und dieser auch von einer Landesregierung gestellt werden kann. Dasselbe gilt für den Ausschluss von der staatlichen Finanzierung von Teilorganisationen
