    The issue of groundwater depletion which affecting the Great Hungarian Plain, especially its Sand Ridge region, brings about severe ecological and economic consequences. Research on the possible causes behind this phenomenon has been ongoing for decades, yet determining their relative importance remains a subject of scientific debate to this day. Several authors highlight the significance of afforestation in reducing groundwater levels. This can occur through two mechanisms: water uptake by vegetation and reduction in recharge from precipitation (interception, soil moisture uptake). We examined these mechanisms based on soil moisture and groundwater data measured at depths of 90, 150, and 200 cm with high temporal resolution at a black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and a black pine (Pinus nigra) stands in our sample area which was established in the Sand Ridge at Kecskemét-Méntelek. Based on the data, it can be concluded that there is no direct or indirect water uptake from the groundwater, presumably due to a significant horizontal distance between the root zone and the groundwater. In the case of soil moisture, the drying effect of forest stands is clearly evident in the shallower layers during the growing season. However, based on soil moisture data from deeper layers, it can be stated that theoretical groundwater recharge from precipitation is only possible beneath the black locust stand. The apparent contradiction can presumably be explained by the influence of macropores formed by the root system. This is supported by the significant difference observed between the black locust and black pine stands. Our conclusion is that forest stands can have significantly different local effects on groundwater levels. Therefore, rather than making general conclusions, understanding the processes behind these effects requires monitoring data examining several elements of the specific hydrological system. © Szerző(k) 2024

    Light response curve analysis of juvenile Püspökladányi and Üllői black locust

    Assimilation (A), intercellular CO2 level (Ci) and stomatal conductance (total conductance of CO2 = gtc) light response curves (A/PPFD, Ci/PPFD, gtc/PPFD curves) of 2-year-old promising black locust clone 'Püspökladányi' and the registered one, 'Üllői', were analyzed, aiming to study A, Ci and gtc in function of Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) levels. The natural logarithmic (A/PPFD and Ci/PPFD) and quadratic (gtc/PPFD) regression functions fitted well to the measured data points for both parameters. The R2 value for the A/PPFD is 0.9745 for 'Püspökladányi' and 0.9444 for the 'Üllői' variety. The R2 values were 0.9499 ('Püspökladányi') and 0.8629 ('Üllői') for the gtc/PPFD curves and 0.8950 ('Püspökladányi') and 0.9112 ('Üllői') for the Ci/PPFD curves. The A/PPFD curves of the tested clones increased steadily with increasing illumination level, but it flattened at the 600 µmol m-2 s-1 PPFD level, which is due to the effect of photorespiration on the assimilation rate. For 'Üllői', the A/PPFD curve decreased at the 1500 µmol m-2 s-1 PPFD level. In contrast to the results for A/PPFD, the Ci/PPFD curve decreased with increasing PPFD level. In case of gtc/PPFD curve, gtc values peak at 900 µmol m-2 s-1 PPFD level for 'Püspökladányi' and 600 µmol m-2 s-1 PPFD level for 'Üllői'. We found significant differences between the A values, as well as the gtc ones. In Europe, negative changes, e.g. increasingly frequent drought, heat, uneven distribution of precipitation, etc., in climate are predicted for the future. Under such conditions, relatively drought-tolerant tree species such as black locust will play an important role in new afforestation and uninterrupted wood supply.     Developing Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) based on underutilized Hungarian wood species

    The demand for wood-based construction materials is increasing, and the current supply of softwood from Austria and Germany is likely to run out in the coming years. At the current rate of production, the supply of traditionally used softwood raw materials is unsustainable. In addition, the warming climate is making it more difficult to grow Softwood species such as pines, which are one of the most important raw materials for the wood industry. As a result, there is a need to find alternative tree species that can adapt to the changing climate, and whose technical properties are suitable for use in construction. One potential source of alternative wood is hardwood species from the Carpathian Basin. This study, which is the part of the ERDOLAB (Forest Lab) research project, aims to develop Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) from underutilized Hungarian hardwood species for use in the construction industry. Several LSL panels were manufactured using poplar strands and MDI adhesive, with dimensions 340x340x35 mm, and 600 to 650 kg/m3 in density. Tests included bending and internal bond strength, as well as water absorption and thickness swelling. Test results show that the experimental LSL meets most of the requirements of the standard for structural building materials, with the exception of tensile strength perpendicular to the plane, which is slightly lower than the required standard. However, all other properties of LSL meet or exceed the requirements of the standard. Therefore, LSL can be considered a suitable material for structural applications with the exception of applications where high tensile strength perpendicular to the plane is required

    A gyorsan változó gazdasági környezet és dinamikus fogyasztói igények egyre nagyobb kihívásokat támasztanak a kimondottan érzékeny szektornak számító szállodaipar és rekreációs fürdőturizmus irányában. En-nek eredményeképpen egyre jelentősebb szerepet kapnak az olyan működési és üzemeltetési struktúrák, melyek jellegüknek köszönhetően versenyelőnyt élveznek a versenytársaikkal szemben, illetve ellenállóbbak a gazdasági környezet változásainak. A kutatás során olyan, Magyarországon található fürdő-szálloda komplexumok működési területeit vizsgáltuk, melyek egymással közvetlen fizikai és üzletmeneti kapcsolatban állnak. A kutatás alapkérdése, hogy az ilyen koncepcióban működő épületegyüttesek működési modellje mennyire teszi lehetővé az üzemeltetési szinergiák kihasználását és milyen előnyökkel és hátrányokkal szolgál a felek részére. A vizsgálat központi témaköre a marketing tevékenység, az itt felmerülő gya-korlatok, fejlesztési koncepciók és együttműködési lehetőségek lokális és re-gionális szinten. A primer kutatás szállodaigazgatókkal és fürdővezetőkkel végzett mélyinterjúkon alapszik, amit egy kérdőíves kutatás egészít ki.     Mechanical Properties of Furniture Joints Using Loose Tenons and Connectors

    The investigation conducted in this study focused on assessing the withdrawal resistance of T-joints and the bending moment capacity in the tension and compression of corner joints. For samples, preparation glued-in loose tenons (Domino dowels) and dismountable connectors were used as connecting elements. The joints were made of European beech wood and a D3-grade PVAc adhesive was utilized for bonding. The effect of the joint type, the shoulders’ bonding, and the load application direction were investigated. The test results revealed that the withdrawal resistance of Domino dowel joints exhibited twice the strength compared to Domino connectors. Moreover, the presence of a bonded area on the shoulders did not significantly impact the strength of the joints. In the case of corner joints, the bending moment capacity in compression was notably influenced by the bond line on the shoulders, although such an effect was not significant in tension. Domino dowel joints provided a robust and reliable permanent connection between wooden elements, surpassing Domino connectors; however, in both cases, the strength values exceeded those of conventional dowels and cam lock connector joints
