    The escalating carbon dioxide emissions leading to global climate change are acknowledged as a paramount environmental challenge in the twenty-first century. The significance of land use systems in stabilising carbon dioxide levels and enhancing carbon sink potential has gained noteworthy attention from both the scientific and political communities. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emphasises that agroforestry systems present vital prospects for synergising climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts, offering substantial technical mitigation potential. Windbreaks are well-known agroforestry systems in Hungary and form an important part of agricultural landscapes. The improved agroforestry subsidy system in our country makes it relevant to model the carbon sequestration potential of windbreaks. In the framework of the ForestLab project we plan to develop a carbon sequestration model specific for Hungarian agroforestry systems. In this study, as a preparatory step of the model development, weassessed the yield class distribution of Hungarian windbreaks by tree species group and identified variables that had significant effect on yield classbased on the data of the National Forestry Database. Our results show that among the examined effects the most important predictor of the yield class of windbreaks was the tree species group, followed by the thickness of the productive soil layer and the hydrology of the site

    Novel Technique for Reducing Geometrical Inaccuracies of Clamped Workpiece During Machining: A Hybrid Method

    The aim of this paper is to provide a novel technique in production technology, which ensures the adequate tightening torque of workpiece by a vise connector to minimize the effect of elastic deformation, therefore geometrical inaccuracies roughness, during machining process. This effect emerges if the clamping force is excessively high, resulting in a deformed workpiece with a slightly convex surface. Once this surface is machined and the clamping force is released, the material returns to its initial shape and the newly machined flat surface will be concaved, resulting geometrical inaccuracy. The method is based on a simple workpiece, where the elastic deformation is numerically modelled and experimentally measured as a function of different clamping heights and tightening forces. During the experiments, the workpiece is tightened by bolts, step by step, and in each step, the deformation of the surface is measured with a coordinate measuring machine equipped with a Touch Probe Measurement system. This measurement process is followed by finite element modelling, where the same system, with identical boundary conditions (load, constraints, material properties), are computationally created to compare the numerically and experimentally obtained results. As a result of evaluating various cases, a user-friendly database was established that provides recommendations for specific geometry, position, and capture height. Our model can also propose a minimum clamping height if geometry, position, and maximum force(s) are specified during machining. © The Author(s), 2024

    Examination of the Effect of Four Pesticides Used in Practice on Beauveria Strains Under Laboratory Conditions

    Biological pest control is increasingly crucial and emphasized in research, leading to the frequent use of entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana and B. brongniartii. Integrated pest management often requires multiple control agents to address various species simultaneously, raising the question of the interaction between the utilized fungi and the other active agents applied simultaneously. The present study examined the interactions between active ingredients and entomopathogenic fungi in laboratory conditions. The results indicate that insecticides and herbicides containing diazinon or glyphosate have neutral or positive effects on the examined Beauveria species. However, fungicides with the active ingredients penconazole or sulfur demonstrated adverse effects when used alongside the tested entomopathogenic fungi. The combined use of fungicides and fungi deserves examination because, in many cases, fungal diseases appear simultaneously with pests, e.g., powdery mildew
