The technique to collect the data used a heuristic reasoning technique. The findings of the study found that there are two forms of trauma, namely physical and psychological trauma. Physical trauma is in the form of injuries, vomiting, and trembling, while psychological trauma is in the form of fear, nervousness, anger, and sadness. There are four main characters’ responses in this novel: emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical. The emotional response in this novel is in the form of panic, refusal, and avoidance, and the cognitive response in this novel is in the form of difficulties in concentrating. The behavioral response in this novel is in the form of avoiding people and talking about the experiences. The physical response is related to the physical act committed by someone who suffers from the trauma. The physical response in this novel is in the form of losing the body’s strength. By examining these layers of trauma and response, the study underscores the complex interplay between body and mind in the aftermath of profound suffering. This analysis offers a deeper understanding of how trauma shapes human behavior and emotions, providing insight into the broader psychological impacts of extreme adversity

This study observes the implementation of differentiated instructions (DI) with literary works to enhance students' engagement and reading comprehension in eighth-grade EFL classroom settings. The investigation employed an exploratory sequential mixed-method design with quantitative data collection through pre-tests and post-tests to assess students' reading comprehension, and a questionnaire was used to measure engagement. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the teacher to gain insights into DI with literary works implementation. The findings showed significant enhancement in students' engagement and reading comprehension after implementing DI with literary works. The questionnaire results indicated high levels of engagement, with mean scores of 3.32 for behavioral engagement, 3.34 for emotional engagement, and 3.10 for cognitive engagement, suggesting that students were actively involved in the learning process at multiple levels. Furthermore, the pre-test and post-test results showed a notable increase in reading comprehension, with the mean pre-test score at 66.17 and the mean post-test score at 77.46, reflecting an 11.29-point improvement. Moreover, the teacher's reflection highlighted its effectiveness in fostering a student-centered classroom, though the approach required considerable preparation and effort. This study implies that teachers need additional support and training to effectively design and implement DI in their classrooms. Furthermore, this research contributes to the integration of literary works as a medium for differentiated learning, so it provides a novel approach to enhance students' engagement and reading comprehension

    No full text
This study explores future-oriented curricular priorities for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) by employing a three-round Delphi method involving 25 experts from academia and industry. In Round 1, participants identified 63 emerging themes across five domains: digital literacy integration, interdisciplinary ESP content, soft-skill infusion, task-based learning models, and adaptive assessment strategies. Round 2 consolidated and ranked 12 core components, with AI literacy, adaptive task-based modules, cross-cultural pragmatics, and soft-skills integration emerging as top priorities. By Round 3, consensus (≥75%) was achieved on a four-pillar ESP framework: technological integration, learner-centered pedagogy, discipline-specific authenticity, and outcome-based assessment. Cross-sectoral analysis revealed a significant gap between industry-driven priorities (e.g., real-time communication) and academic emphasis (e.g., critical reading and writing), highlighting the need for curricular harmonization. The findings underscore a shift toward integrative, technology-enhanced, and professionally aligned ESP models. Implications include the urgent need to reform teacher training to address competencies such as AI, sustainability, and data-driven instructio

As one of English basic skills, writing is considered the most difficult skill for students, such as arranging correct sentences, writing the topic sentence, organizing ideas, and lack of vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate learning model and media that support understanding and development of writing skills can help students to increase their writing ability. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Project-Based Learning through the Canva application to improve students’ writing achievement in describing historical and tourism places as one of the basic competencies that students should master at the senior high school level. This study aimed to find out whether Project-Based Learning and the Canva application influence students’ writing and to analyze the development of students’ writing after implementing PjBL by making written text using the Canva application.  The writers used a quantitative method which is a quasi-experimental research design by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The data were obtained through the writing test in collecting students’ scores. To analyze the data, the writer used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05. The samples were two classes in the tenth grade of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka which consisted of 66 students. Based on the research analysis, students’ average score on the pre-test was 55.3 and students’ average score on the post-test was 75.37. The result also showed that ttable was 1.669 and tvalue was 2.924, which means that ttable was higher thantvalue at significant level 5%. It indicated thatH0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the result of t-test calculation, it can be stated that the use of PjBL through Canva application is effective to facilitate students in improving students’ learning achievement, especially in writing descriptive text about historical and tourism places

    Get PDF
A journal article review is an academic writing that summarizes and assesses others’ research-based articles. For doctoral students, reviewing a journal article is usually to train them for building their argument and broadening their knowledge of an issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of article reviews written in English by one class consisting of twelve Indonesian EFL doctoral students in their first semester at a university in Semarang, Indonesia. Twelve reviews written by the students were collected. The evaluation of their writings is based on Systemic Functional Grammar, particularly the interpersonal metafunction analysis, that is, the analysis of generic structure and appraisal. Therefore, this study employs textual analyses. The analysis of generic structure refers to the template from the Writing Centre of Thompson Rivers University, and the analysis of appraisal follows Martin and White’s appraisal system (2005). The discussion of this article explains the generic structure and lexico-grammatical realizations of evaluative stances used by the students. The findings indicate that not all doctoral students can organize their review following the generic structure and optimize the use of appraisal items. This exploratory investigation provides some pedagogical implications for the teaching of academic writings in EFL contexts

Identifying Javanese cultural norms and addressing politeness maxims in mitigating verbal sexual violence

    Get PDF
In 2023, Yogyakarta Province has documented 308 instances of sexual violence, including cases of verbal abuse. This fact is surprising given Yogyakarta's unique position as a cultural showcase in Indonesia, which is particularly evident in its depictions of politeness and identity. In contrast, Yogyakarta's Javanese propriety culture, known as unggah-ungguh, functions as a vital protective mechanism for its community by integrating local cultural components. This distinctive cultural politeness parallels Leech's Six Maxims of Politeness: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. This research examines the correlation between these maxims and Javanese parenting practices as delineated in publications by the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta, aimed at educators and parents in Yogyakarta, emphasizing the significance of courteous communication and virtuous conduct grounded in Javanese tradition. Strengthening the initiative from school to university levels, together with adequate support from family and community, may lead to a reduction in verbal sexual assault
