The translation of Satan’s Slave 2 Communion: An analysis of pronoun usage in movie translation from Indonesian to English
In this research, we analyzed the frequency, usage, and changes of pronouns in the translation of Satan’s Slave 2: Communion. This research was conducted by examining changes in subject or object pronouns from Indonesian to English in the movie subtitle. We transferred the clean version of the subtitle into a spreadsheet, into which we incorporated necessary context information such as presented in 3 categories; pronoun to pronoun, pronoun to omission, and pronoun to reference. The results show that the use and change of pronouns in the translation process of Satan’s Slave 2 are attached by at least two aspects: grammatical and socio-cultural aspects. The difference in the principle of linguistic rules between Indonesian and English becomes an important factor behind the transposition and modulation of pronouns in the translation process. The sociocultural differences between Indonesian and English also need to be carefully examined before translating, because there are significant differences in the use of pronouns between Indonesian and English, especially related to sociocultural aspects that affect the use of language towards interlocutors
Blindfold game in vocabulary mastery enhancement to Indonesian EFL young learners
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Blindfold game in enhancing vocabulary mastery among students. A quasi-experimental design was utilized, involving both control and experimental groups. Sixth-grade students from a Demak elementary school participated in the study, which employed a non-random sampling method. The research sample included an experimental group consisting of 22 students from class VIA and a control group of 21 students from class VIB. Data on students' vocabulary knowledge were collected through a vocabulary exam comprising 15 multiple-choice questions and 10 matching items, administered via pre-tests and post-tests. The researcher analyzed the data using a t-test and SPSS 23. The pre- and post-test scores for the experimental group were 60.91 and 78.18, respectively, while the control group achieved scores of 56.76 and 60.95. The statistical analysis indicated a significance level (2-tailed) of less than 0.05, resulting in the rejection of H0 and the acceptance of H1. In conclusion, the Blindfold game has been demonstrated to be an effective instructional tool for improving vocabulary knowledge among Indonesian EFL young learners. The game not only enhanced students' vocabulary mastery but also increased their motivation to learn English. Accordingly, it is recommended that teachers utilize diverse teaching methods to foster students' learning motivation, encouraging them to become engaged and enthusiastic participants in class
Twisted fairy tale: Narrative functions and dramatic personae in William Faulkner`s A Rose for Emily
William Faulkner`s A Rose for Emily is narrated in a complex narrative structure, thus, making it difficult to follow the story`s chronology despite its relatively short form. This article provides a different approach using Propp`s narratology to show that the story can be read as a modern fairy tale but with some twisted elements. The analysis focuses on the sequence of events based on Propp`s 31 narrative functions. The analysis also highlights the characters performing the functions following Propp`s seven types of dramatis personae. The findings reveal that the events in A Rose for Emily conform to some of the narrative functions of a fairy tale. The initial situation introduces Emily as the heroine of the story, followed by her father's death, which represents the absentation function. In the middle of the narrative, the villainy function serves as the complication of the story. The story`s end is also similar to a fairy tale by the wedding function. However, these fairy tale elements are presented in twisted ways. Emily was introduced only when she died, and she poisoned Homer to be able to live with him ever after. Meanwhile, Emily and Homer also provide twists as the story's heroine and villain

In today's borderless world, people move quickly, forming diaspora communities with complex cultural lives. The culture shock that causes mental health disruption is common in these diaspora communities. Therefore, the study of this diaspora is crucial to be conducted. The novel entitled How to be an American Housewife represents the difficulties of becoming a diaspora subject in a new country with a new culture. This study focuses on the diaspora experience undergone by Shoko Morgan. The study aims to show the construction of diaspora identity, the condition of the Japanese diaspora community in America, and the author's critical position. The literary work under scrutiny shows the experience of Japanese immigrants at that time, such as feeling alienated, isolated, and discriminated against. Through this novel, Margaret Dilloway has represented her mother's challenging life experiences as a diaspora subject in the USA
Applying small group discussion to improve the ability to convey opinions orally on recount text material
The ability to use a language to convey ideas, feelings and thoughts orally is called speaking. This shows that speaking skills are crucial to learn, including for students at school. In this way, teachers are expected to be more innovative in finding learning methods or models that can improve students’ speaking skills. The small group discussion learning model is considered to be the right treatment because it can increase students’ confidence in speaking, increase interaction between students, and students become more active in contributing to learning. The aim of carrying out this research is to find out how the application of the Small Group Discussion learning model to students affects their speaking skills, especially in conveying opinions orally in English. This research used a quantitative approach with experimental research method. This research was carried out at MA Plus Darul Hufadz Jatinangor. Investigating persuasive strategies used in Zakir Naik’s Islamic lecture at Oxford Union
Islamic lectures are potent media for people to influence others, specific groups, and society. Based on this case, this research aims to identify and analyze the types of persuasive strategies used by Zakir Naik in his Islamic Lecture under the theme “Islam and the 21st Century,” which took place at the Oxford Union. This descriptive and qualitative research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach proposed by Teun A. Van Dijk. Furthermore, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Theory of Persuasion was employed to support the analysis of how persuasive strategies were applied in the Islamic lecture. The data of this research were the sentences of the speech text transcription, which contained persuasive strategies spoken by Zakir Naik in his “Islam and the 21st Century” Oxford Union Islamic Lecture uploaded on his YouTube Channel. The results show three categories of “socio-cognitive” CDA by Teun A. Van Dijk, namely, text, cognition, and social context, which are used to analyze the speech text and its relation to social and power. Concerning this, the persuasive strategies analysis shows that Zakir Naik uses three types of rhetorical proofs from a total of 121 data, which include ethical proof (ethos), logical proof (logos), and emotional proof (pathos). Ethos is the most common rhetorical proof in his Islamic lecture, making up 63.5% of the speech. It is followed by pathos (33.58% of the speech) and logos (27.22% of the speech)
Think-Aloud Protocols in process studies revisited: Suggestions for veridicality
Thinking-Aloud or Think-Aloud Protocols have been used to study thinking processes in varied fields such as psychology, business, sports, industry, and education. Recently, studies have tried to see its application in teaching in both offline and online modes. Despite its success, as demonstrated by these studies, controversies concerning the believability of thinking aloud and the process of reactivity have been raised. However, no explicit solution has been provided. In response to the issues, this paper critically reviewed examples of think-aloud protocols using Bowles’s guide to TAP (2008). The results show that (1) problems of the reactivity process stem from the nature of the tasks given, and (2) to minimize the problems of reactivity, the TAP data collection procedure should move from the least to the most intervention of the researcher
