Nahdlatul Ulama's Ideological Hegemony in Nadirsyah Hosen's Oration: A Critical Discourse Analysis
As a multicultural country, Indonesia has big challenges to maintain the harmony and unity. Nowadays, intolerance and acute extremism are rampant that spread to a group of people. These problems could disrupt national stability and inter-religious harmonies. To prevent divisions and wars between religious believers, the Ministry of Religion is aggressively promoting religious moderation in every line of society. The religious moderation was often conveyed by religious leaders, government, and leaders of sciences. The focus of this research is the ideological hegemony of Islam Nusantara in the speech which is delivered by Dr. KH. Nadirsyah Hosen, LL.M, MA., Ph.D (Gus Nadir). The data are fragments of the oration discourse that represent the hegemony of Islam Nusantara, while the data source used is a scientific oration discourse delivered by Nadirsyah Hosen at the 2nd Annual Conference for Moslem. Meanwhile, the data analysis method used Norman Fairclouh's Critical Discourse Analysis model, the first stage was description. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that Gus Nadir represented the Islam Nusantara (Islamic archipelago's ideologies) in scientific orations with the theme of religious moderation through classification, rewording, overwording, and metaphors
Political Humor in Abdur Arsyad's Stand-up Comedy
The study aimed to identify types of political humor in Abdur Arsyad’s stand-up comedy by applying the Script-Based Semantic Theory of Humor (SSTH) and describing the language games to support humor. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data consisted of Abdur Arsyad’s stand-up comedy video published on Youtube. The data method collection used listening and note-taking techniques. The result showed that political humor in Abdur Arsyad’s stand-up comedy can be classified into (1) humor to criticize political figures and political groups, and (2) humor that describes bad conditions in society: political repression, education, corruption, and social inequality. The Students’ Perception of the Teaching Methods and Media on Mandarin Conversation Online Learning at University
Mandarin is the second most widely used foreign language in the world. Teaching Mandarin needs appropriate teaching methods and media to achieve learning objectives. Researchers researched the learning of Mandarin conversation in one of the private universities of Bandung to analyze the influence of teaching methods applied and teaching media used during online learning. The research involved a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was done by filling out questionnaires and interviews to determine the alignment of teaching methods and teaching media used and the influence of teaching methods and media on online learning of Mandarin conversation in that university. The results showed that learning Mandarin conversation online using three learning methods (audio-lingual, communicative approach, and task-based methods) and online teaching media Zoom Meeting, YouTube, Morning, and WhatsApp was perceived as effective. It could improve university students’ Mandarin conversation skills
Didi Kempot’s Campursari Songs: the Existence and the Effects of Communication Media
Indonesia is famous for its cultural heritage. Campursari is a musical genre of Indonesian local arts. Didi Kempot was a successful musician and singer who composed popular campursari songs. His songs were popular in Indonesia and abroad, such as in the Netherlands, Suriname, etc. The communication media greatly impacts the popularity of his works even though the maestro, Didi Kempot, has passed away. This research aims to examine the existence of regional arts and the effects of communication media on Didi Kempot’s Campursari music. Descriptive-qualitative method was applied in this research. The data were collected by observation on YouTube, Instagram accounts, 'Sobat Ambyar' fans, direct interviews with the Javanese cultural practitioners, and literature studies. The results of the study indicate that Didi Kempot’s campursari still exists today, although it undergoes decreased interaction in the community. Media Communication has also succeeded in influencing people's communication behavior to interact. This is because the development of media and technology makes it easier for the public and accelerates the dissemination of information
Pragmatic Equivalence of Expressive Speech Act in Television Series Bridgerton
This article aims to identify pragmatic equivalence in the translation of expressive speech acts. Descriptive and comparative methods were used in this study to analyze the data. Data collection is done by analyzing documents with the technique of observing and note-taking. The data is in the form of utterances containing expressive speech acts on the subtitles of the Bridgerton TV series in English and Indonesian. The data is obtained through accessing the Netflix platform with a personal account. Found 123 data of expressive speech acts on the Bridgerton TV series subtitle with the functions of criticizing, praising, sarcastic, complaining, apologizing, condolences and thanks. The result of the research shows that there are two types of pragmatic equivalence that the Bridgerton TV series subtitle translator has successfully achieved in translating expressive speech acts. The equivalences are the equivalence of expressive illocutionary force and the equivalence of the distance of relevance. Thus, the translator has been able to convey messages from the source text to the target text commensurately
Tindak Tutur Ekspresif dalam Talkshow “Sarah Sechan” dan “The Ellen Degeneres Show”: Kajian Pragmatik Lintas Budaya
Language really helps human to express and share their life especially on media; language is becoming the tool to attract the listeners’ or audiences’ attention. This study focused on the use of expressive speech acts used by the talk show hosts of “Sarah Sechan” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” (two different hosts from Indonesia and from America). The research aimed to identify the similarity and the difference of expressive speech acts used by both hosts with the same topic through cross-cultural pragmatics point of view. The research used a qualitative descriptive method. The result showed that the host of Sarah Sechan talk show is considered friendlier due to the fact that the host used expressive speect acts and praised the guest more often than the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show
Pembelajaran Berbicara Berbantuan Komik Strip untuk Pembelajar BIPA Korea Selatan
Speaking skill is a very complex skill because it involves other skills. Especially in BIPA learning, relevant strategies are needed as an alternative to learn BIPA. Therefore, this study is intended to describe the results of learning process by using comic strip toward speaking practice. Based on the tracing of previous studies, it was not found any research related to the use of comic strips in learning to speak BIPA. The method used in this research is qualitative. The participants in this study were South Korean BIPA learners in intermediate levels of ability. The results of the data analysis show that learning to speak using comic strip can be an alternative in teaching BIPA. This can be seen in all activities which run effectively. Gender Perspectives in Kasnono Traditional Rituals Speech in Biloto Village, South Central Timor District
The people of South Central Timor District In East Nusa Tenggara are “archaic” people or traditional people who still maintain their life with local cultural patterns from the legacy of their ancestors. In South Central Timor District, to be precised in Biloto Village, there is a traditional ritual which is a ritual that is cultured for the bride. A bride from any clan and from any tribe is married to one of the Timorese men or atoin meto, she is obliged to follow this Kasnono ritual. If the bride doesn't perform the ritual, then all the bad things will overflow the bride and her new family. This study aims to examine the gender perspective contained in Kasnono's traditional speech and ritual stages. The methods used in studying the data is descriptive qualitative method that used interviews and observation. The method of observation is carried out with the aim of obtaining a complete picture of the data regarding real verbal and nonverbal behavior regarding the continuity of the ritual. Meanwhile, based on the results of observations and interviews, although at a glance this ritual is burdensome for women or wives in their married life, the data proved that the women are the core of their household, whose positions are equal to men, that their roles and existence are highly respected and upheld. In the tradition of Biloto village, a granary is a place of honor for all parts of the Timorese community in the village of Biloto. Therefore, by implementing this ritual the wives hold the key to the family's granary, whereas the husband and the other family members are not allowed to enter the barn.. Finally by carrying out the Kasnono traditional ritual, the wife officially becomes the main control to manage everything in the family house and the wife’s position is equal to her husband.
Two Stay Two Stray Strategy on the Students’ Reading Comprehension: The Effectiveness and the Students’ Perspectives
This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy on the students' reading comprehension achievement of the first semester students of English department at Universitas Pamulang, and to know the students’ perspective in applying TSTS. A quantitative approach was conducted in this research by applying Independent T-test calculation. To obtain the data, the writers selected the sample comprised 60 students (30 students in experimental class and 30 students in control class) by having random sampling. The experimental class was taught by using Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy and the control class was taught by using conventional method. To collect the data, the writers used two kinds of instruments: a reading test and a questionnaire. These instruments were administered to answer stated research questions. A reading test was used to find out the effectiveness of TSTS strategy by SPSS calculation, and the questionnaire was distributed to find out the students’ perspectives in applying TSTS in reading activity. The research findings indicated the result of hypothesis based on Mann-Whitney U test the Sig 2-tailed value 0.019 < 0.05 which means that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be inferred that the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy has effectiveness in learning reading comprehension of the students. Furthermore, students assume that Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy is more enjoyable than the previous strategy (7.7%), they guess the main ideas of the text on the basis of pictures, charts or figures (7,4), and they understand my reading comprehension text before straying to another group (7.3%). Therefore, it shows the Two Stay Two Stray strategy shares the beneficial encouragement on the students reading comprehension
Grammatical Error Analysis of English Abstracts Translation in Jurnal Ilmiah Ekonomi Islam (JIEI) Journal
Scientific writing like abstract demands perfect grammar writing in academic language. A common error usually is the use of an automated translator such as Google Translate to translate abstracts from Indonesian to English. The translation produced needs to be polished again to avoid mistakes in the grammar itself. The objective of this research is to find the type of grammatical error in English abstracts published in Jurnal Ilmiah Ekonomi Islam (JIEI) journal in 2020 both English and Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that three types of grammatical errors found in English abstracts in the JIEI journal are misinformation, omission, and addition. In misinformation error, there are 98 data or 44.5 %. In omission error, there are 69 data or 31.36 %. In addition to error, there are 53 data or 24.09 %. In misinformation, several errors were found in the use of part of speech such as article/determiner, the preposition, verb (subject-verb agreement), noun (singular-plural), and pronoun. In omission, several errors were found in the omission of part of speech such as article ‘a, an, the’, preposition ‘on’ and ‘to’. In addition, several errors were found in the addition part of speech such as article/determiner ‘a, an, the”, preposition “of, to, in, on, at”. Preposition sometimes is not used with certain verbs and expressions. The most dominant type of grammatical error is misinformation. There is the misuse of grammar forms into other grammatical forms in the use of part of speech such as in the determiner/article, preposition, verb, noun, and pronoun
