Employing keywords and lexical bundles within figure captions in earth science research articles
The presentation of data is considered an essential part of academic writing, especially in research articles, and it could not stand alone without a short text to describe the visual data, namely figure legends. This research aims to identify the keywords and lexical bundles frequently used in figure legends. In addition, this research also examines the functions conveyed by these linguistic features. Based on the identification of the corpus, there are 334 keywords found with the 20 highest frequencies belonging to the terminologies frequently used in earth science (fault, seismic, quartz, and formation) and words related to the visual representation of the figure legends (line/lines, map, area, figure and legend). Furthermore, noun-related bundles are found to be the greatest number for lexical bundles, with 165, followed by verb-related bundles with 79, clause-related bundles with 54, and preposition-related bundles with 17. These lexical bundles perform research-oriented, text-oriented, and participant-oriented functions. These findings suggest that lexical bundles play a role in explaining the research condition, connecting visual data and research results discussed in research articles, and displaying information about visual data or specific parts of research articles to readers

Giving command to other people should consider many things: choice of word, context of situation and social context. Those can help us, both as speaker or writer, avoid the rudeness and threaten other's face. This paper is intended to take term "politeness" into account within some examples of sentences formed in notices. The samples are taken from two different places in Singapore: in a guest house and in mosque. Those notices are analyzed using "face" concept by showing the strategy used by the writer in both places. The result shows the writers from the two places use different strategy in commanding the reader. At guests house, the writer uses indirectness and give positive face to the reader. In this point, the writer tries to be close to the reader, decrease the distance between them. In the other side, the notices found in a mosque use imperative sentence. This form of sentence contains directive, asking the reader to do something directly. Based on the form and content of sentences in those notices, the readers will be potentially threatened. For that reason, the writer does FTA in most of notices

Betty Friedan, an American feminist writer, reveals the controversial phenomenon of the concept of feminine mystique which restrains women from seeking their true selves due to oppression from various parties. In its practice, this phenomenon occurs in the Hollywood film industry, which is supposed to be an industry uncontaminated by gender discrimination. This study aims to investigate the issue of women's marginalization in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by implementing Betty Friedan’s theory of feminine mystique. Valid data were collected through qualitative research methods by quoting narrations and dialogues from the characters in the novel. Furthermore, the data is processed and analyzed based on the theory used. This study presents the forms of Evelyn's marginalization in three areas: domestic, Hollywood film industry, and public and media. In the end, Evelyn Hugo's rejection of gender oppression in those three areas makes her able to escape from women’s marginalization and become a successful female icon in the Hollywood film industry
