Poetry as a means of social criticism and medium for learning literature in high school
The message of criticism can be conveyed in various ways, one of which is through the medium of poetry. As a literary work, poetry conveys a message in a series of beautiful languages, short but full of meaning, and able to touch the feelings of its readers. This research examines a poem entitled Selfish by Misnawati. In this poem, there is a social critique of the phenomenon of selfishness that occurs in modern society without leaving aesthetic value with the use of metaphors that can touch the reader's feelings. This study aims to explore the use of metaphors in poetry that convey social criticism and its implications for learning literary works. The method used in this study is a literature study with a semiotic design to identify the metaphorical meaning contained in the poem. Analysis data is in the form of words, phrases, or expressions that contain metaphors. The results of this study show that the use of metaphors in this poem was created to strengthen the message or meaning of social criticism so that it can foster social awareness, feelings of empathy, critical thinking, develop creativity, and foster the reader's sense of aesthetics. The implications of these findings can be used in literary learning in the framework of (1) fostering students' social awareness, (2) improving students' literary ability, (3) arousing student empathy, (4) developing student creativity, and (5) fostering students' critical awareness
Communication challenges in the hospitality business: Analysis of students' strategies in learning English at STIEPARI Semarang
This research aims to explore the communication challenges faced by students in the hospitality business and analyze English language learning strategies that can be used to address these challenges. The primary focus of this research is on students majoring in Hotel Accommodation at the School of Economics and Business (STIEPARI) Semarang. The main research questions involve understanding how communication challenges in the hospitality business affect students' English language communication abilities, what learning strategies can be employed by these students, and how effective these strategies are in improving their English speaking skills. The research methods include interviews, observations, and document analysis to obtain comprehensive data. The findings of this research are expected to provide in-depth insights into communication issues in the context of the hospitality business, offer recommendations for suitable English language learning strategies, and measure the effectiveness of their implementation. The findings from this research can contribute to a better understanding of how to enhance English communication skills among Hospitality major students, thus preparing them to tackle communication challenges that may arise in the hospitality industry in the future. This research is expected to serve as a basis for the development of more effective learning programs in this field
Joko Widodo’s speeches at the 42nd ASEAN Summit: A critical discourse analysis
The 42nd ASEAN Summit was held in Indonesia, making Indonesia the chairman of the Summit. Joko Widodo, as the president, represented the country to welcome the ASEAN members and open the summit and the meetings by giving remarks and statements. This study attempted to examine how interpersonal metafunction is used in the opening remarks and press statements as well as to reveal the power strategy and ideology depicted in the opening remarks and press statements. Eight opening remarks and two press statements were analyzed utilizing Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis was employed to reveal the power relations and the ideology. The study found declarative, interrogative, and imperative were the mood types in which it utilized probability, obligation, and inclination modality. It showed that Joko Widodo acted as the initiator to promote collaboration to achieve ASEAN’s goals
Lexical and cultural meaning Mitoni tradition of Javanese society in Plumbungan Village, Banyudono, Boyolali: An ethnolinguistic studies
Mitoni is one of the seven monthly traditions of pregnant women carried out by the Javanese community; each series of events and ubarampe has its meaning for the community. This study aims to describe the lexical and cultural meanings of the series of events and ubarampe in the mitoni tradition in Boyolali Regency. This research is ethnolinguistic in nature because it explains the relationship between language and culture in Plumbungan Village, Banyudono District, Boyolali Regency. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data collection methods used participatory observation followed by recording techniques and note-taking techniques. Methods of data analysis using the equivalent method. The results of this study indicate that the lexicon in the mitoni tradition is (1) sesajen, (2) siraman, (3) mecah tigan, (4) brojolan, (5) solan salin, and (6) kondangan. While the ubarampe found were (1) kembang, (2) banyu pitung sumur, (3) jimbeng, (4) gedhang raja, (5) kinang, (6) takir pontang, (7) duit koin, (8) jarik lumpatan, (9) cengkir, (10) jenang procot, (11) tumpeng, (12) gudhangan, (13) rujak, (14) tigan jawa, and (15) jenang cenil. Each of these lexicons has a symbol of life for the Banyudono people
Regeneration patterns of multicultural values in the Muneng Pilgrimage Tradition in Temanggung, Indonesia
This research answers regeneration patterns and multicultural values in the Muneng pilgrimage tradition. Introducing traditions to the younger generation is very important. Society cannot avoid generations because these habits are inherent and have their own meaning for a society. The results of this research show that the regeneration carried out in the Muneng pilgrimage tradition culture needs to include regeneration of cultural presenters, cultural implementers and cultural viewers. The methods used are the value of respect, the value of tolerance, the value of respect, the value of cooperation. This research aims to describe the multicultural values of the Muneng pilgrimage tradition. The method used is the historical method. This historical method has steps that include processional heuristics and offerings, criticism in the form of authentic tests rather than external and internal, interpretation of historical analysis, and historiography. The results nclude 1) Regeneration is carried out with the involvement of all ages, 2) The Muneng pilgrimage becomes a motif of belief and becomes a means of preserving culture in Muneng, 3) The values in culture result in harmonization in life
Lexical semantic study of the Bubakan Manten Tradition in Mojodelik Village, Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia
This research aims to analyze the lexicon contained in the bubakan manten traditional procession in Mojodelik village on AM Production's YouTube account and analyze the lexical and cultural meaning contained in the bubakan manten traditional procession in Mojodelik village on AM Production's YouTube account. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a lexical semantic approach. The data in this research is in the form of a lexicon contained in the bubakan manten tradition, which contains lexical and cultural meanings. The primary data source in this research is the video of the bubakan manten tradition in Mojodelik Village, which is available on the AM Production Purwosari YouTube account, entitled Live Streaming Season 2 Langen Tayub Mustiko Laras Mojodelik Gayam, as well as interviews with the resource person who served as the leader in the implementation of bubakan manten, namely Mr. Jimin and Mr. Pandholi. Data collection techniques in this research used note-taking and interview techniques. Data analysis techniques used include sorting data for analysis, classifying lexicon forms, explaining the lexical and cultural meaning of the lexicon, and conclusion. The results of the research are a lexicon of places, equipment, food, and plants. The lexical meaning of the bubakan tradition is to open the way for marriage, while the cultural meaning contained in the bubakan tradition is to ask for safety and to be kept away from bad things
Students difficulties in learning the Javanese language: A case study at SMA Negeri 1 Kasiman, Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia
Students at SMA Negeri 1 Kasiman face significant challenges in mastering the Javanese language. This research aims to pinpoint the specific difficulties encountered in Javanese language studies. The research employed a qualitative case study approach, focusing on students from SMA Negeri 1 Kasiman. Data were gathered through interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The analysis was conducted using an interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. Findings indicated that students struggle with aksara Jawa (23%), unggah-ungguh basa (21%), tembang macapat (13%), geguritan (10%), cerkak (10%), pranatacara (14%), and drama (9%). This highlights that the most challenging area is aksara Jawa, while drama poses the least difficulty. Contributing factors to these difficulties include insufficient time allocated for the subject and unengaging, uncreative, and non-innovative teaching methods and materials
Siti Walidah and her contribution to Islamic women's movement: Gadamer’s fusion of horizon
This research focuses on Siti Walidah and her preaching in Java in the film script of Nyai Ahmad Dahlan. By focusing on Siti Walidah, this research has several objectives., which are the fusion of horizons towards Siti Walidah to unveil interesting insights into merging cultural boundaries, investigating the transformation of traditional practices and beliefs by fusing horizons between different cultures, and exploring the experiences of Siti Walidah, who exemplifies the intermingling of Indonesian and Western cultures. This research is a qualitative study that uses a hermeneutic approach. In methodological principles, Gadamer's hermeneutics aligns with qualitative research, which aims to find a deep understanding that requires qualitative interpretation. The data source in this research is a literary work of a film script entitled Nyai Ahmad Dahlan (2017) by looking for variables or data from Siti Walidah's manuscript as the object of research on theological humanism in Javanese society in the pre-independence era through several stages: determining research questions, selecting research objects, reviewing data, data categorization, data validation, data analysis, and interpretation. The research findings on the fusion of horizons towards Siti Walidah unveil interesting insights into merging cultural boundaries. The research reveals that the fusion of horizons contributes to a multifaceted identity, allowing Siti Walidah to navigate and embrace diverse cultural perspectives. Moreover, it highlights the positive impact of cultural fusion on personal growth and the development of a unique identity that transcends boundaries. Overall, this research sheds light on the potential benefits and challenges of merging cultures
Swear Words Types Utilization in Traumazine Album Song Lyrics by Megan Thee Stallion
The study of word meaning is formulated in semantics. Language as a medium of communication constructs meaning and structure. Communication can be done through many mediums and one of them is song lyrics. Song has its own uniqueness in choosing words, suit to the genre. In the modern era, the young generation tempts to consume a lot more media and is impacted by them then utilize it as a normal in daily communication. Therefore, this research made to analyze the utilization of swear words in rap song lyrics by classifying the types using the theory of Chirico 2014. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method. The data is collected from the eighteen song lyrics in the Traumazine album by Megan Thee Stallion. Data is analyzed with the theory of swear words by Chirico 2014, furthermore defines the meaning using the Cambridge dictionary as a primary and the Urban dictionary as the secondary dictionary. As a result, all four types of swear words which are cursing, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity exist in the album. There is a new phenomenon as well, where the researcher found that the repetition of swear words is commonly used in rap songs. Moreover, bitch used to represent a female and nigga to represent a male repeatedly found among the 18 songs
Seeking Eudaimonia-Emma in Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert: Feminism Existential Study
This research is a Beauvoirian existential feminist study applied to the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. More specifically, the study on Emma focused on her goal of achieving eudaimonia or happiness. By applying the qualitative narrative method, this study focuses specifically on the characters' existence and life experiences to achieve eudaimonic conditions as they are without being weighed down in the form of normative judgments. This study contains novelty and significance because the focus on existential choices to pursue the eudaimonic conditions has not been widely applied to literary works, which will vary the situational experience and setting. As a result, the elusive eudaimonic state remains unattainable by such existential choices that do not include responsibility
