It describes phonological change in gairaigo and identifies the morphological process that is the form and kind of gairaigo found in the use of gairaigo in automobile advertisements in Asahi Shinbun newspaper of January 2001-2002 edition. There are three conclusions that can be drawed in this research. First, the process of phonological change in gairaigo consists of three aspects: phoneme addition, phoneme deletion, and substitution. Second, the morphological process of gairaigo consists of form and kind. The forms of gairaigo are base form and derived form. Derived from in garaigo consists of compound word and abbreviation. Included in abbreviation are clipping, abbreviation, and acronym. Gairaigo forms found in data are nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Most gairaigo is noun. The verb can be formed by adding verb suru ‘doing’ preceded by English form. The adjective is followed by suffix {-na}, which is used in adjective loanwords. There is no gairaigo formation of affixation and thus the English loanword is adopted. Third, the overall process, both the phonological and the morphological, is a form of integration of foreign word into Japanese. Keywords: loanwords, compound word, clipping, abbreviation, acrony

    Get PDF
The objective of this research is to see the morals taught in the novel Little Women by American white writer Louisa May Alcott. Through these morals, it also aims to study the roots of these morals as part of social values as well as the society of mid-19th century mirrored in the novel.Since the emphasis is on the cultural study, the research is done in the perspective of American Studies. In this case, historical, sociological and cultural approaches are, inevitably, used besides literary approach. All the data used in this research are written text, library research methodology is applied. Books, journals, and many written materials, including internet-based materials, are treated as secondary data, while the novel itself is considered as the primary one. There are three steps in this library research, namely, collecting data, selecting data, and analyzing data. The other method used in this research is analytical-descriptive method, by which all the data obtained are analyzed and presented descriptively. The research shows that American socio-cultural situation in the mid-19th century is basic environment and driving force for the characters’ love, emotion as well as behavior. Its writer Louisa May Alcott arranges the novel structure and preaches proper morals also in accordance with that. A detailed analysis of the American culture here includes its social reform thinking — transcendentalism, literary traditions, women’s social status in the time, and the religious origins behind these values. These cultural heritages reflected in Little Women point out the room for further research on this topic

NEW IMAGE OF VAMPIRE IN MODERN LITERARY WORKS

    Get PDF
Literary works cannot be separated from culture. As Abrams(1998) stated that literary works represent the universe. The relation between literary works and universe is never pure. Nothing is ever pure, being at one with itself, and paradigms are no exception. Between the literary studies paradigm as defined and the cultural studies paradigm advocated there are a range of empirical positions. The object of literary study presumes an equation between the aesthetic and the experiential in which the complexity of life is synthesized with the unity of art. Novel as one of the types of literary work serves the variation and interesting development of topics. A novel may be the portrayal of human reality. Its subject matter may be taken from patterns of life, or set in an imaginative time or place. (Nurgiyantoro, 2002:24). A character builds or appears as the implementation of real world and good author is someone who can bring the character outside the literary works. Vampire myths, legends and folklore have existed throughout the ages all over the world. They have appeared in some shape or form in almost every culture and society. Vampire myths are as old as human civilization. The myths change from culture to culture and from geographical area. The myths have evolved along with the times. Literary works make the character famous and mingle with the culture. The aims of this research are to find out the image of vampire in modern culture. Furthermore the research is to find out the changing image of vampire in literary works. The data of this research are Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula as the representation of vampire character in the early ages and Stephanie Meyer’s novel Twilight as the representation of vampire character in modern culture. Thecharacters in both novels are analyzed by using structural approach which focus on characterization and setting, and mythopoeic approach. The result of this research showed that there is a difference in vampire depiction in both novels. The difference depiction of vampires in the both novel is a result of cultural difference which related to society, psychology, historical background of the novel and build new image of vampire in modern literary works. Keywords: character, changing image, modern literary works, setting, vampir
