The main difference between inflection and derivation is that inflection does not make a new lexeme but a grammatical word with respect to syntactic rules; however, derivation makes a new lexeme which is lexically different from its base. In English language, derivation may occur through prefixation, suffixation, conversion, and compounding besides other morphological processes such as back formation, reduplication, clipping, acronym, and blending.   Keywords:derivation, inflection, lexical word, grammatical word, morphological processe

APPLYING TEXTUAL METAFUNCTION IN EFL WRITING: AN APPROACH TO TEACH WRITING

The Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, specifically the textual metafunction, has been tried to be applied in teaching writing to English as a Foreign Language. SFL is chosen as an alternative application in language teaching since linguistics is the study of language that seeks how language works. Traditionally textual metafunction has often been neglected in language teaching, where sentences have been created, manipulated, and assessed in isolation. In EFL writing classroom, we find that learners often write paragraphs that consist of sentences which do not seem to connect together into cohesive devices. Thinking of this, I started to seek an alternative approach to help the students improve their writings, that is how to develop ideas so that the texts the students produce will run “smoothly†and “hang together†logically. It means that the sentences in their writings are well organized and developed coherently. Besides, the ideas will not jump from one idea to other ideas.  This paper attempts to depict how to apply textual metafunction in EFL writing and how thematic patterns, which involves the relationship between clauses based on the information contained in themes and rhemes, can achieve cohesion in EFL learners’ text. It is assumed that the thematic patterns specify its usefulness as a discourse tool for adding students in writing their paragraph into cohesive text. The result shows that thematic patterns is one way of achieving cohesion in text since it involves connecting sentences together in a way which moves the text from the Given to the New. In short, the thematic pattern of texts is needed to analyze their own text to check for thematic flow in order to get a good cohesive text. Keyword: Cohesive text, EFL, SFL, Thematic Pattern

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS' LEVEL OF ANXIETY AND STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING CLASS

Writing is one of the language skills which shows how a second language learner performs his or her verbal competence. Writing performance of an English learner can reflect the learner’s knowledge in English language patterns through the written discourse they present. However, due to several factors, writing in the target language is not always easy for a second language learner. Thus, there are some Indonesian students fail to perform their best in writing though those who can not achieve good mark in writing are not always the left behind students.Second language learner’s verbal performance is determined by three internal factors namely filter, organizer, and monitor (Dulay, Burt, Krashen, 1982:45-60). The first factor is a subconscious process  related to learner’s affective state which includes anxiety. This research starts from a hypothesis that students’ high level of anxiety is followed by lower students’ achievement. Thus, this research is aimed to prove the hypothesis as well as seeing if there is a strong correlation between the students’  level of anxiety and their achievement. The data were gained through document, questionnaire using Westide Test Anxiety Scale and Focus Group Discussion. The results of the study indicate a weak negative correlation between students’ level of anxiety and students’ achievement. From the result of the Focus Group Discussion,  it was found that the sources of students’ anxiety were varied. Â

The complexity of connubiality in the two plays can be interwoven by many factors. The discussion of the connubiality or marriage in the plays may not be easily separated from issues of racial sentiments and prejudice since both plays are not free from such issues. Therefore, this article highlights the complexity within three aspects: the purpose or the motive of the marriage, the matrimonial ceremony, and the racial prejudice overshadowing it. Making use of narrative study and documentary analysis, this article closely studies the existence and inter-relation of those three aspects in order to better comprehend the plays. The results show that the aspects of motive and as well as racial sentiments and prejudice are present in both plays while aspect of matrimonial ceremony is not clearly present. It is because of this amalgam that makes the plays more aesthetic from narrative standpoint

Deixis are words meaning pointing. Accroding to Levinson (1983:54), deixis are classified into five types, they are person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. This research is a descriptive qualitative one using sociopragmatic approach. The aim of this research is to describe the information in the use of shijishi ko-so-a. The method used in this research is participatory one using the theory of Kinsui (1989), Yuuji(1999) and Akio (1990). The source of data of this research is the interactive interview in University of Kyuushuu, Japan. The corpus of the data are in the form of clauses containing  shijishi ko-so-a. The result shows that shijishi so is the mostly used in the interactive interview because the setting is formal and the relationship between the speaker and hearer is equal. As the people that know each other for the first time , they have to respect each other and use polite language because in Japanese society, a new person is a meuenohito’ that is a person that must be respected more than us. The mostly used references are anaphoric ones because the topic is flexible. The hearer is the one who has the highest  information area because the speaker admits and respect the owner of information, that is the hearer. Â

FILSAFAT ANALITIS BAHASA DAN HUBUNGANNYA DENGAN ILMU LINGUISTIK PRAGMATIK

The development of pragmatic linguistics cannot be separated from the development of analytic philosophical tradition which focuses on ordinary language. Analytic philosophy falls into three main branches: logical atomism, logical positivism, and ordinary language philosophy. According to the philosophy of logical atomism, a reality is expressed in language propositions, not ideas. A proposition is everything which can be verified to be true or false. Meanwhile, logical positivism philosophy is characterised by positive evaluation of knowledge and scientific method. Unlike logical atomism and logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy does not base on language logic, but on the ordinary language which human beings use in their daily activities. In thisordinary language philosophy, language is studied from both structural and functional aspects. Language is studied from its fundamental function in daily life. This idea of language philosophy inspired the development of pragmatic linguistics. Some language philosophers, such as Austin, Searl, and Grice, initiated the development of pragmatic linguistics through their ideas on speechacts and cooperative principle. Keywords: logical atomism, logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy, pragmatic linguistic

This research is aimed to find out and describe deictic analysis in ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns in Japanese. This research is a library study, in which the writer took reference and data from the internet, books, and dictionary. The source of the data was manga de manabu Nihongokaiwajutsu (Japanese comics), taken from 1 - 12 edition of Nihongo Jaanaru. The writer employed pragmatic approach under the framework proposed by Takahasi, et al (2000) and Teramura (1999). The data were collected by using inventory technique (note taking). The raw data were classified based on the theory of Takahashi, et al (2000), while the unit of analysis is every sentence containing ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns. The data were then analyzed cataphorically and anaphorically through the aforementioned framework. The result shows that the use of ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns are based on the physical location of referred thing or person, the contextual position of thing or person, and the shared knowledge toward referred thing or person. In addition, the writer also found empatitive deixis, i.e where the speaker’s emotion influences the use of ko-so-a pronouns. This, however, violates the theory of Takahashi, Teramura and Yuuji. Keywords: anaphoric, cataphoric, deixis, demonstrative pronouns, ko-so-
