    A FORMALISM APPROACH ON DAPHNE DU MAURIER'S REBECCA

    Literature is a human living description expressed by the authors through their literary texts. Understanding literature is about how to understand the texts that contain their creative process. Formalism is one of the approaches aimed at finding out what and why the motor of the story works in the literary texts. Daphne du Maurier's was analyzed using the formalism approach. The main character obsession is the one that runs the story, which arouses various conflicts among characters. How the main character solves the problems in the conflict is the final answer of the story analysis using the formalism approach

    The paper entitled The Exorcism described in James Wan's Film, The Conjuring has an objective to describe a problem dealing with demonic possessed and exorcism. The object used here is a horror film, since the whole tension of the story is about misery and haunted. Exorcism is a spiritual practice used to help people who experiences demonic possessed. Lorraine and Ed as the main characters here are described as demonologists or paranormal investigators who help the Perron's family from the demonic possessed. The terror happened in the old haunted house in Rhode Island brings Carolyn, Peron's wife into a mental illness and it cannot be handled by a doctor's hand except a spiritual practice like exorcism. After it has been approved by the Priest of the church, finally the exorcism was done by the demonologist or paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed. They are described as the main character of the story. During the exorcism they experience both internal and external conflict and it develops becomes the potential conflict. The tension of the story is finally resolved when the main characters did the spiritual practice/the exorcism well.     This paper entitled “Keterperjaraan Pikiran sebagai Comfort Zone dan Ketakutan Perubahan sebagai Mental Block yang Tercermin dalam Novel ‘The Cave’ Karya Jose Saramago†emerges primary signifier representing other signs, and dimension relationship of syntagm and paradigm realized in the novel “The Caveâ€. Theapproaches used to solve the problem are intrinsic and semiotic approaches. The methods of data collecting are library research and documentation. The presentation of data processing result is descriptive research report. The result this paper is solution from signification analysis consisting of the significance of the sign “Goaâ€as icon, index, and symbol and the scheme of syntagm and paradigm dimension relationship and their significance. Seen from the relationship, writer finds the message in story that is two matters which sometime cannot go together; those are tradition and modernization, because during civilized historical journey of human being, the modernization often breaks the tradition. The challenge is how to make them coexisting and accepting each other.     This simple research article is about a philosophy of language on the Indonesian subjective third-person singular pronouns DIA and IA and their probable equivalents in the English language. The philosophy involves discussions on the nature of meaning of DIA and IA, the use of DIA and IA, the cognition of DIA and IA, and the relationship between DIA and IA and reality in Indonesian context. English probable equivalents are analyzed and elaborated to contribute a conclusion on new forms and functions of the subjective pronouns DIA and IA in Indonesian context.     ENHANCING THE STUDENTS' CREATIVE WRITING ABILITY THROUGH GENRE AND INTERTEXTUALITY-BASED APPROACH

    It is not an easy task for language students to write creatively. The students usually have insufficient knowledge of what they have to write. In respond to this gap this paper shows how genre and inter-textuality- based approach was implemented to develop the students’ creative writing ability through a series of writing assignment. The research participants included 20 students taking ‘Advanced Genre-Based writing†course in 2010/2011 academic year. The data were obtained from the students’ writings and classroom observations. The finding showed that teaching writing using genre and intertextuality approach could enhance the students’ creative writing. This evidence could be identified through students’ improvements in their  writings’ assignments. Another finding revealed that the approach could enhance the students’ motivation to express themselves through pieces of  writings. Based on the findings, the presenters argue that the introduction of genre and inter-textuality to creative writing programs is an important issue that writing teachers should take into account. Keywords: creative writing, genre, intertextuality, students’writings, students’ motivatio

    This article discusses the meaning of the metaphor contained in the Japanese song’s lyrics. With the use of metaphor analysis "Knowles and Moon" (2006), this research examines twelve metaphors from the data source entitled Kokoro no Tomo. The aim of this study is to describe the use and meaning of the metaphor used by song’s writer. Song’s lyric is like a poem which always contains aestetice matters. It represents the expression of the writers concerning his perspective about something. To understand a song’s lyric of metaphor, we have to examine the relationship between the literal meaning and the meaning of metaphor or contextual meaning. It can be concluded that metaphor is used by writer to describe his’ real meaning’ that can not be described with ‘ordinary’ words

    Literature is one of the ways to understand the world and brings people to world of ideas and imaginations. The world that is believed could never happen in this world before. Sastrowardoyo says that novel does not give worth formula for intellect, but it suggests many possibilities on moral, social and psychology. Fiction stories encourage the ability to think, to dream, to bring our minds to all kinds of situation, and to create imaginative experiences. Besides, Tarigan says that in fiction stories there is a possibility of reality because one of many tasks of a writer is to create imaginative characters and to make them live in his stories. Life does not always run smoothly. Sometimes we face a condition that forces us to choose. Occasionally the choices we have do not suit our desire. We must sacrifice something to make our dream comes true. Sacrifice is needed to pursue our desires as in Samruam Singh’s Daughter for Sale. In Samruam Singh’s Daughter for Sale, the main character is Lung Maa. Lung Maa faces a very difficult situation. He needs money to pay the hospital where his wife is hospitalized. His garden does not produce much. His garden’s little production is only enough to pay his debt that already is mountainous. Thus Lung Maa chooses to sacrifice his daughter. Gender is one of the basic factors that influences and forms social construct and several conversations about gender. Gender is not related to the characteristics possessed by someone, but it exists and is possesed by every person. Different gender will  influence the form of utterance.     Ki ga sumanai is one of ethics Bushido code that is believed by the Japanese as the key of successful progress in Japan in various fields. One spirit of Bushido Ki ga sumanai has made the Japanese people become workaholic and always want to work and continue working. The totality of the soul directed for their work. Work is considered as a devotion to the country, thus work is the first priority in their live. The purpose of this paper is to find out more about the ontological and axiological aspects of Ki ga sumanai. This paper used descriptive and qualitative methods. Ki ga sumanai is like two sides of the coin. One side brings enormous benefits to the progress of Japan, but the other side it makes workers struggle to karoushi , but this is considered normally for them and think it is part of devotion. Patriarchal world makes men dominate in public field, while women are seen asdomestic beings. Gender inequality is an ordinal hierarchy between men and women in material resources, power, and status. In discussing this matter, libertarian radical feminism can be used because it discusses gender as the main cause of oppression toward women. One of the TV series discussing the theme is Sex and the City, the First Season. The show follows the lives of a group of four women who are single, successful, and independent. This series changes the view of seeing women’s gender roles as the oppressed side, particularly in sexuality. The power and money that they get make them can treat men as a sexual object
