    IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH ACTIVATING STUDENTS’ SCHEMATA (A Classroom Action Research at Dian Nuswantoro University Semarang in the Academic Year of 2011-2012)

    This research investigated the improvement of reading comprehension through activating students’ schemata. It was carried out on the first semester at Dian Nuswantoro University Semarang in the academic year 2011/2012. During the process of observation phase, some problems found in reading classroom activities, those are: most of students felt unmotivated in reading class, got bored, were confused to understand the content of the text, had less willingness, had limited number of vocabulary, had bad score in English subject from their UAN, and also had bad score from their English Subject when they were tested before entering the university. The first goal of this research is to discover the problems when ActivatingSchemata strategy implemented, the second goal is to describe the situation on the strategy applied, the third goal is to measure how far the improvement of students’ reading comprehension during Activating Schemata strategy implemented. Classroom Action Research used in the research as a research methodology that classified into planning activity, acting, observing and reflecting. There were three cycles used in the research. The research findings showed that reading comprehension improved through Activating Schemata. It can be seen from the students’ behavioral changes, such as: 1) they got easier to activate their schemata, 2) they got easier to do reading exercises, and 3) they realized that reading subject is intersting. The improvement also showed in their average score (60.33) pre test score, (66.25) test one, (71.42) test two, (77.33) post test score. This implied that students’ reading comprehension improved through Activating students’ Schemata.Keywords : activating schemata, classroom action research, reading comprehension

    AN ANALYSIS OF "ORIFLAME" WOMAN PERFUME ADVERTISEMENTS

    Slogan and image usually represent a product in an advertisement. Theslogan consists of phrases or sentences, while the image consists of people or elsewith the background. This research was conducted to find out the tools to conveythe message in Oriflame perfume advertisements and to discover the hiddenmessages by using those tools in the advertisements. Searle’s illocutionary actstheory (1977) and Peirce's semiotics theory (1931) were used as frameworks foranalysis. A descriptive qualitative was used to analyze the data. The result showsthat from verbal tool analysis, there are 17 illocutionary acts found in the taglinesand body copies of the advertisements. The first illocutionary act found in the datais assertive. It is because the advertiser wants their product to be known and topersuade the readers by using information, description, claim, and statement. Thesecond is directive because the advertiser gives command to the readersespecially woman to use the perfume. From non verbal tool analysis, theresearchers found signs in each background image which then were turned intoobject and interpretant through a cognition process. From verbal and non verbaltools, the researchers discovered the hidden messages of the Oriflame perfumeadvertisements. The conclusion is that the advertiser created different images ofeach advertisement. The images support the tagline and the body copy ofadvertisement. The advertiser wants the consumers to be able to choose their ownperfume based on their characteristics or what they want to be like

    This study is aimed at analyzing the code mixing in Japanese songs using sociolinguistic approach. It describes the form of code mixing, the cause of code mixing in Japanese songs, and the influence of code mixing to the development of Weinreich language. The data analysed in this study are the sentences containing code mixing sung and composed by Ai Carina in Don’t Stop album. Those data were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative technique based on Suwito’s theory of code mixing, Bhatia and Ritchie’s code mixing influencing factors, and Weinreich and Mackey’s influence of code mixing. The resuts showed that the form of code mixing found in the songs are mostly outer code mixing in the form of clause. The factors influencing the code mixing are the desire to adapt the texts and the melody, as the emphasis of the story, as the tone appropriateness, to show the formal situation, to give the intrinsic message to the listeners, and to give emphasis to certain field. The influences of code mixing are dominantly in the form of interference in sentence level, they are word, phrase, and clause.Keywords : code mixing, interference, integration, influencing factors, sociolinguistics

    : Literature is often considered as a reflection of society’s real life. It also depicts some life’s aspect such as social, culture, thought, and belief. In Lu Xun’s “New Year’s Sacrificeâ€, those aspects are represented in words, sentences, and paragraphs. To get a deeper comprehension of it, people need to understand signs and symbols which author used. This paper aims to explain how literature can describe Chinese traditional culture and thought, especially about women, with semiotic approach by identifying any sign used in it. The result of this research shows that Chinese women are inferior in society. They are not worthy unless able to bear a son, so the continuation of the husband’s family can be preserved. Besides, women in China have to live with so many rules and obligations that society has created for them

    Personal adjustment which is derived from cultural system and social interactions always becomes an actual issue. Likewise, the description of women’s personal adjustment which is reflected through the character of Anju and Sudha in Sister of My Heart and The Vine of Desire written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The result of the analysis indicates that the description of women’s personal adjustment reflected through the character of Anju and Sudha in Sister of My Heart and The Vine of Desire is influenced by cultural setting in the plot of the novel. Cultural interaction carried out by Anju and Sudha has produced typical different patterns of personal adjustment. In India, Anju and Sudha tend to adjust themselves allopathically, while in America, they tend to adjust themselves autopathically. The typical different patterns of personal adjustment produced by Anju dan Sudha can be seen clearly through the analysis of several factors, such as steps of (1) personal development, (2) conflicts experienced by the characters, and (3) women position in a certain culture

    Japanese people put forward a kind of politeness or indirectness, specifically referred to as enryo, in their life. Enryo is a Japanese culture that is always maintained. For Japanese, enryo controls unacceptable behaviors. Enryo can be seen in movies, dramas, or other literary works. One of the movies that show enryo is Marumo no Okite. Enryo in this movie was analyzed by using Wierzbicka’s theory. The result demonstrates that enryo deals with a semantic component as indicated by the proposition of “I cannot say/do this: “I want this, I don’t want thisâ€.     GAMBITS : CONVERSATIONAL STRATEGY SIGNALS USED BY NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH IN NATURAL CONVERSATION

    A verbal spoken communication (conversation) is considered successful when the speaker and listener can understand each other. Unlike children who easily master their native language, adult foreign language learners, although they have learned and practiced the foreign language for years, are in general not able to use thelanguage even for basic communication purposes. To get the success of a conversation people can use gambits (words and phrases that serve regulate the smooth flow of a conversational talk). Although gambits do not have meaning in the traditional sense of the words, they are a very important part of conversational behavior.In this study the data were obtained from a conversation between an Indonesian girl and a Dutch man who was staying in Indonesia for a visit. TheIndonesian girl had an assignment to interview a foreigner who was staying in Indonesia. The interviewer’s English is in intermediate level. The finding shows that the four main functions of gambits are demonstrated in the conversation, consisting mainly state consciousness signal which is demonstrated twelve times, semanticframing (eight times), communication control signals (six times), and the last signaling of social context (twice).Key words: conversational strategy signals, state consciousness signal, semantic framing, communication control signals, signaling of social contex
