Impact of Coal Mining in Diversification of Rural Livelihoods: A Case Study in the Barjora Colliery Area of Bankura District, West Bengal
Coal mining plays a key role in developing the economic backbone of many developing countries, such as India, although on a local scale. Coal mining industries enormously influence the surrounding environments and livelihoods. An open cast coal mine severely enhances the dust particles in the local atmosphere over time and in turn, affects the fertility of the surrounding lands.
Additionally, the socio-economic conditions of the local community go through a massive perturbation due to land acquisition, migration of people and insecurity of jobs. In this present work, an effort has been made to understand the effect of open cast coal mining on the diverse livelihoods of the rural community in Barjora colliery area of West Bengal. The livelihood pattern of the local community has significantly changed from pre-mining to post-mining, such as in agriculture sector, the work participation rate has reduced from 62% to 3%, and at present, about 55% people are now engaged in the mining sector. The immediate effect helped to increase the financial capacity of rural people. However, the upward socio-economic condition is not sustainable for the long-term. The discontinuity in coal extraction is also the major cause for the job insecurity and vulnerability in socio-economic life

It remains well established that international students face a number of challenges when they arrive at a foreign institute to pursue higher education. This research aims to examine the socio-psychological adaptation of international students to learning and professional activities of Elabuga Institute (branch) of Kazan Federal University, Russia. Using a number of socio-psychological adaptation methods of assessment (such as the sense of social security satisfaction, social frustration and psychological adaptation to new life conditions), the research aims to make remedial arrangements to boost the psychosocial adaptation of international students to educational and professional activities.
The findings from the assessment methods were deployed to create an intervention programme, which in turn created the effective adaptation environment for overcoming the psychological inconveniences of language and culture barriers, integrating students into personal and business relations with the native speakers, corporate training of Russian language in conversation clubs, and invitation for participation in mass cultural institute events.
Socio-Cultural Adaptation of Repatriates of East Kazakhstan and Migration Attitudes of the Kazakhs of Mongolia
The article is devoted to the issues of socio-cultural adaptation of repatriates on the territory of East Kazakhstan and the analysis of the migration attitudes of the Kazakhs of Mongolia. Since Kazakhstan gained independence on 16 December 1991, the state has been implementing a state program on the return of ethnic Kazakhs to the country; this practice has spread in many states. The repatriation of ethnic Kazakhs to their historic homeland allows solving many socio-economic, demographic problems. At the same time, relocation to a historic homeland causes a new set of problems related to the adaptation of repatriates, their employment, interaction with the local population, search and self-awareness. Integration processes and strategic social programs of Kazakhstan have become the motivation for the formation of the migration interests of ethnic Kazakhs living abroad
Traditions of S.T. Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ in ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ by O. Wilde
This article aims to analyse the poetic traditions of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by S.T. Coleridge, which migrated into The Ballad of Reading Gaol by O. Wilde. A comparative analysis of original poems and their Russian translations reveals a thematic and structural link that connects these two poems. The article highlights the common features and the differences in literary devices used by Coleridge and Wilde to transmit the complex concepts of suffering and forgiveness through their characters and to declare values and philosophical ideas. The literary devices in point define how these concepts are covered, and serve a common theme in the work of Coleridge and Wilde. The article also provides arguments to confirm the social situation described in the works.
The lyrico-epic genre allows using both poetry analysis tools and prose research methods, which ensures high-quality research.
The article frames values of the modern culture and creates conditions for discovering a conceptual similarity in the symbolism of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and The Ballad of Reading Gaol

The process of reforming of the system of compulsory secondary education in Ukraine challenges teachers and determine new requirements for them. The study and analysis of teachers’ professional education and training in other countries are one of the main ways to settle strategic directions of pedagogical education modernisation and thus to improve the quality of education in Ukraine. The national education systems of Ukraine and the USA are functionally common despite some differences in cultural and social aspects. This makes it possible to use the experience of the USA in reforming the system of professional preparation of teachers in Ukraine and improving their educational and professional qualifications. The study aims to make a comparative analysis of professional education and training of teachers in the USA from professionalism and competence and propose a way to adjust the most successful American experience to Ukrainian conditions. The study applies a comparative-historical method to compare socio-pedagogical phenomena and views. The structural method makes it possible to consider the pedagogical process based on system components of theory and practice of professional education of teachers. The prognostic method is used to ascertain the successful experience of the USA and outline the prospects of its implementation in Ukraine. Our research concludes that the system of professional preparation of teachers should be improved in order to increase the educational potential of the country. The study reveals a significant contrast between academic competence and professional qualification of teachers. It is determined that the objectives for professional preparation of secondary school teachers are the following: improving teaching competence, the combination of teaching practice and pedagogical theory and integration of pedagogical subjects and subjects of specialisation
Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace in Assam: The Present Scenario
The United Nations General Assembly has delegated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (VAW). This issue of the journal Space and Culture, India is dedicated to raise further awareness against VAW, inequalities and discrimination. Now I turn to discuss the abstract of this editorial.
Greater access to public spaces, entry into the professional space and engagement in different sectors of labour forces are the diverse forms of opportunities urbanisation and modernisation is supposed to provide to each individual including women. However, one could argue that both urbanisation and modernisation have begeted gender discrimination. And the degree of discrimination is faced mostly by women putting them in a vulnerable position by generating women-centric workplace violence—mainly sexual harassment of women at workplace (SHWWP). This paper highlights the findings of two research studies: Workplace Safety and Dignity for Women in Assam and Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment at Professional Places in Assam: Post 23rd April 2013 carried out by the author during the period 2017-2019.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 2017, the state of Assam contributes 6.4 percentage points of state-share to all-India share of crime against women; its overall crime rate against women when calculated as a crime per one-hundred thousand of the population stands at 143.6. Evidently, the state of Assam also has high occurrences of SHWWP, which stands at 44% but only 2.7% complaint cases were lodged. The findings also uncovered that there exist weak and inadequate complaint mechanisms in the state even after the existence of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013
Semiotic Analysis of the Symbolic World of the Culture Complex
This research probes the symbolic meaning of the Korkyt Ata Complex aimed at understanding the cultural and spiritual life of the ancient Turkic people. Perhaps, this is the first instance when the semiotic analysis technique has been applied to studying the Korkyt Ata Complex in a broader context of Kazakh culture. Thus, the research is an attempt to reveal its symbolic cultural significance to the Kazakh society using a semiotic methodology as the basis to study the cultural monuments. The role of the Korkyt Ata memorial in the formation of ancient Turkic civilisation was considered from a socio-cultural and philosophical perspective. The symbolic elements of the culturally bound worldview that were depicted in the Korkyt Ata memorial were analysed via the methodological bases of symbolic representations. The symbolic side of the memorial was defined in spiritual, cultural and worldview spheres. The Complex, its external sides specifically, underwent a semiotic analysis to accomplish the above-mentioned objectives
Nyai Madura: Representation of Female Religious Leaders in Contemporary Indonesia
This paper examines the roles and position of female religious leaders in Madura Island, known as Nyai. Nyais are female religious leaders and are highly respected by the rural communities for not only being someone who is master in Islamic teachings, and her dakwah (outreach), but also being influential amongst the communities. Yet, the role and position of nyai in a patriarchal society of Madura are crucial in the sense that their dakwah and teachings have gradually become doctrine for female communities in the male-dominated environment. Particular nyais have demonstrated their determination in identity contestation and playing their agency role for their communities. Their popularity and growing followers have become a serious concern and criticism of some male religious leaders (known as kyai) in the Island. An ethnography study applied to observe the daily life of two female nyais in two regional districts of Madura, they are Nyai Sitti of Sampang and Nyai Dausy of Sumenep, and found that in the context of nyai’s hierarchy in Madura, these two nyais have built what have created authority and represented their leadership positions on their social class. They are the central figures, where their popularity are shaped by their charisma, genealogy, and people’s power. Indeed, they have reached the position of ‘nyai rajheh’ (great leader), which is a leading influential figure, especially for women in contemporary Madura Island
