Metabolic complications and their mechanisms in patients with craniopharyngioma
No full textAfter diagnosis of craniopharyngioma, patients frequently develop a rapid weight gain leading to morbid hypothalamic obesity due to disease- and/or treatment-associated hypothalamic lesions. Hypothalamic obesity should be diagnosed and treated in the context of hypothalamic syndrome. Hypothalamic syndrome includes neuroendocrine deficiencies, disruption of circadian rhythm, disturbed hunger-satiety and thirst feelings, temperature dysregulation, and neurocognitive, sleep and psychosocial behavioral problems. Long-term prognosis is frequently impaired by increased risk for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular problems, severe impairments of health-related quality of life, and premature mortality. Treatment of hypothalamic syndrome is challenging. Recently, an algorithm for personalized, risk-specific treatment of hypothalamic syndrome has been published. Dextro-amphetamines and other central stimulating agents as well as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists may cause weight loss. Bariatric surgery is effective. However, non-reversible procedures are controversial due to ethical and legal considerations in minors. Hypothalamus-sparing treatment strategies and research on novel therapeutic agents for hypothalamic syndrome are warranted

No full textAudiobooks are more popular than ever before. The article examines how this so-called “audiobook boom”, as well as the communities, reading practices, and economic systems surrounding audiobooks affect how we ascribe value to books and reading. The article departs from a notion of literary values based in the sociology of literature. While its contribution is primarily conceptual, the discussion is based on results from two interview studies with, respectively, Danish and Swedish authors, publishers, and streaming service representatives. As the “audiobook boom” in Denmark and Sweden is connected to the distribution model of subscription-based streaming, the article presents an analysis of how this model transforms the ways in which we ascribe economic value to books. The article argues that these changes regarding economic values and valuation also impact the “content”, resulting in a turn towards genre fiction and what some informants see as a commercialization of literary culture. Turning towards the readers’ perspective, the audiobook significantly transforms how we use literature in everyday contexts – and who uses it. The audiobook is thus associated with social and practical values, while the value of the reading, and the knowledge we get through reading-by-listening is questioned. Thus, while the audiobook is socially valued because of its accessibility and its potential for lowering the threshold of literary culture, it is not accepted into the established value systems of that same literary culture. The article concludes that this leads to a polarization of the literary field with audiobooks (and the associated genres) on the one side, and print culture (and associated “quality” fiction) on the other. Based on the results, the article finally discusses what “makes a good audiobook” – and how the format impacts how we value literature in a digital book economy
GOVERNMENT AS GUARANTOR OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM? : Public governance of the arts in sweden
No full textThe chapter describes and discusses the Nordic welfare state approach to governance of the arts using data from Sweden. It enquires into how the Swedish system for public governance of the arts works, in particular with focus on answering the question of whether public governance of the arts does secure artistic freedom, and if so how. In other words, is Swedish public governance of the arts a benefit or a threat to artistic freedom? In order to answer this question, the concepts of governance and policy are defined and described. Furthermore, three dominant public governance modes in use in advanced democracies will be described and used as a theoretical framework for an analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the specific governance arrangements used in Sweden in the field of the arts. The chapter shows that there is reason for concern as regards artistic freedom in Sweden, partly because of the lack of formal arm’s length distance between political and administrative decisionmakers at subnational level, and partly due to ambiguities in government agency information collection related to application procedures

No full textThe atomic lattice plays a critical role in the emergence of high- superconductivity in cuprates. While the dynamics associated with electron-lattice coupling typically unfold on picosecond-to-femtosecond timescales, we present an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy investigation on an optimally doped La-based cuprate that reveals a strong response of kilosecond-scale lattice relaxation dynamics to the superconducting state. Notably, an anomaly emerges around : upon cooling into the superconducting state, the average atomic relaxation lifetime decreases, i.e., dynamics accelerate. This indicates a significant change in the local disorder-induced strain field dynamics at the superconducting transition, highlighting a remarkable coupling between superconductivity and the lattice on quasistatic timescales

Scalable Vertical In-Ga-As Nanowire MOSFET With 67 mV/dec at 126μm Gate Width
No full textHeterogeneous integration of III-V narrow bandgap transistors on silicon technology is desirable for high frequency circuit implementations. Such high-speed transistors must, however, scale to large gate widths to be suitable for general circuit design. Averaging among many variable channels is a key challenge for nanowire devices. A simplified, but high-speed compatible, nanowire device process was developed here. It utilizes metal plugs to reduce complexity in the gate patterning step. It also implements a spin coated BCB low-k dielectric as top interlayer. A vertical In-Ga-As MOSFET with 1600 nanowire channels and 110nm gate length achieved a minimum subthreshold swing of 67 mV/dec at 126μm gate width. The maximum transconductance was 0.88mS/μm at 0.5 V drainsource voltage, with 0.22mA/μm normalized drain current. These long-channel results are on par with state-of-the art, but achieved for a device scaled to unprecedented device width. In tandem with the BCB interlayer, these results promise a back-end-of-line compatible high-speed vertical nanowire technology for integration on silicon
Toward Unified Practices in Trajectory Prediction Research on Bird's-Eye-View Datasets
No full textThe availability of high-quality datasets is crucial for developing behavior prediction algorithms in autonomous vehicles. This paper highlights the need to standardize the use of certain datasets for motion forecasting research to simplify comparative analysis and proposes a set of tools and practices to achieve this. Drawing on extensive experience and a comprehensive review of current literature, we summarize our proposals for preprocessing, visualization, and evaluation in the form of an open-sourced toolbox designed for researchers working on trajectory prediction problems. The clear specification of necessary preprocessing steps and evaluation metrics is intended to alleviate development efforts and facilitate the comparison of results across different studies.
