Radulphus Brito (1290s) on the Syllogism : A Pragmatic Account
General studies of medieval logic tend to neglect the context in which medieval logic developed and the needs to which such a development responded. Accordingly, they normally neglect the non-formal elements they encounter instead of integrating them as elements that meet the specific needs of the medieval intellectual endeavour and that are, then, part and parcel of medieval interpretations of Aristotelian logic. The result is, at best, a partial picture of medieval logic, with a focus on the formal that in some periods and key authors is unwarranted. In this study, I present the account of the syllogism of a crucial figure of thirteenth-century Aristotelianism, Radulphus Brito. My main aim is to show that Brito puts forth a pragmatic account of the syllogism, which includes pragmatic necessary conditions, such as institutional context, background knowledge and intention of the arguers, functional both at the propositional and the consequential levels. I aim, thus, to provide some nuance to our general picture of medieval logic with Brito’s pragmatic account of the syllogism
Long on expectations, short on supply : Regional lithium imbalances and the effects of trade allocations by China, the EU, and the USA
Electric vehicles (EVs) are vital for a decarbonized society, but the rapid growth of the EV market highlights an impending lithium supply crisis. This study integrates supply-demand analysis with trade network simulations, using eight lithium demand scenarios and two supply scenarios to examine regional lithium dynamics and the impact of international trade. Results show that while domestic lithium production in China, Europe, and the USA—especially in Europe, where production may grow 10-fold between 2025 and 2030—will increase, it will not fully meet demand. The regions differ in their paths to self-sufficiency: China may reduce import reliance with lower battery capacity, the USA could ease shortages under a high-supply scenario, and Europe faces the largest deficit. Maximizing imports could bring Europe closer to balance than the USA, but interregional trade complicates this. Governance is urgently needed to prevent competition for scarce resources from hindering low-carbon technology adoption
Generalized Group Delay Weighted Sparse Time–Frequency Analysis for Transient Signals
Time-frequency (TF) postprocessing methods are often used to form concentrated TF representations (TFRs) for nonstationary signals. Regrettably, most such techniques are sensitive to noise and tend to underestimate weak components when dealing with transient signals, resulting in sidelobes and low-resolution TFRs. In this work, we introduce a generalized group delay (GD) weighted sparse TF (GWSTF) analysis method exploiting sparse reconstruction theory to form sparse high-resolution TFRs. Using both numerical simulations and measured data, we show the preferable performance of the proposed method as compared to recent alternative approaches

Host-pathogen interactions in mycobacterial infection – Mechanisms of immunopathology and inflammation
Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. Despite extensive research, many aspects of M. tuberculosis pathogenesis and host immune responses remain unclear, complicating the development of effective treatments. Animal models are crucial for studying these interactions, and Mycobacterium marinum infection in mice serves a valuable surrogate system due to its genetic and pathogenic similarities to M. tuberculosis. This thesis utilizes the murine M. marinum infection model to investigate host immune responses to mycobacterial infection, with a particular focus on the role of the ESX-1 type VII secretion system. ESX-1 is a key virulence determinant that modulates immune cell recruitment and granuloma formation, ultimately shaping disease progression.The findings presented in this thesis provide new insight into mycobacterial persistence and pathology, particularly the role of ESX-1 in shaping immune responses. Additionally, this works highlights the functions of neutrophils and monocytes in the immune defense. By exploring their dynamic interactions and contributions to inflammation and bacterial control, this research enhances our understanding of host-pathogen interactions in mycobacterial pathogenesis
Cryo-EM structure of the human monocarboxylate transporter 10
The monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) membrane protein family has 14 human members that perform key cellular functions, such as regulating metabolism. MCT8 and MCT10 have unique cargo specificity, transporting thyroid hormone and, in the case of MCT10, aromatic amino acids. Dysfunctional MCT8 causes the severe Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome, yet the (patho)physiology and function of MCT8 and MCT10 are not clearly understood, especially at a structural level. We present the cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of MCT10, displaying the classical major facilitator superfamily fold, caught in an inward-open configuration. Together with cargo docking models, the outward-open MCT10 AlphaFold model and validating functional analysis, cargo specificity and transport principles are proposed. These findings significantly enhance our understanding of the structure and function of MCTs, information that also may be valuable for the development of novel treatments against MCT-related disorders to address global challenges such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer

Group exhibition.'The horizon is always receding' brings together a selection of works that reflect on the scope and the implications that the term contemporary may have. As the philosopher Giorgio Agamben suggests, contemporaneity can be understood as a term that surpasses temporal demarcations and transcends simultaneity and coexistence. In this sense, this exhibition serves as a symptomatic display of the concerns of current artists and their immediate relationships with the geopolitical and social environment.Since its foundation in 1981, the Tamayo Museum has assembled a collection of international art respecting the initial criteria of Rufino and Olga Tamayo. Four decades after the museum’s foundation, and far from imposing a linear or geographic narrative, the collection reflects the complexity, the diversity, and the conceptual tensions of our time. Furthermore, it crosses lines of thought and multiple disciplines and techniques, which extends its scope and value.The title of this exhibition suggests that contemporaneity fosters the inevitable emergence of a surplus. When there is the intention to remain updated with regard to the totality of factors that compose the present, there always emerges a new situation that escapes any possibility of apprehension.
