Conflict society: understanding the role of civil society in conflict
This article analyses the relationship between civil society and conflict. It aims to provide an
analytical framework to unpack this complex relationship and assess the impacts which civil
society may have on conflict. In a first section, it analyses the implications of context on civil
society, namely the implications that statehood, democracy, nationalism, development and
international presence have on the nature of civil society. In the second section it examines
more specifically the role of civil society in ethno-political conflicts, or as we rename it
‘conflict society’. The final section turns to the identification of different factors determining
the impact of civil society on conflicts, including political identities, frameworks of action and
political opportunity structures in which civil society actors operate. Accordingly, the different
combinations of these determinants lead to the formation of civil society actors and
ensuing actions that can either fuel conflict, sustain the status quo, or build peace. This article analyses the relationship between civil society and conflict. It aims to provide an

Strategies in Social Network Formation
We run a computerised experiment of network formation where all connections are beneficial and only direct links are costly. Players simultaneously submit link proposals; a connection is made only when both players involved agree. We use both simulated and experimentally generated data to test the determinants of individual behaviour in network formation. We find that approximately 40% of the network formation strategies adopted by the experimental subjects can be accounted for as best responses. We test whether subjects follow alternative patterns of behaviour and in particular if they: propose links to those from whom they have received link proposals in the previous round; propose links to those who have the largest number of direct connections. We find that together with best response behaviour, these strategies explain approximately 75% of the observed choices. We estimate individual propensities to adopt each of these strategies, controlling for group effects. Finally we estimate a mixture model to highlight the proportion of each type of decision maker in the population. We run a computerised experiment of network formation where all connections are beneficial and only direct links are costly. What determines mutual fund size?
The mutual fund industry manages about a quarter of the assets in the U.S. stock market and thus plays an important role in the U.S. economy. The question of how much control is concentrated in the hands of the largest players can be quantitatively discussed in terms of the tail behavior of the mutual fund size distribution. We study the distribution empirically and show that the tail is better described by a log-normal than a power law, indicating less concentration than, for example, personal wealth. We postulate that the reasons for this stem from market eciency and the stochastic nature of fund returns; they
otherwise have very little to do with investor choice. To demonstrate this we study mutual fund entry, exit and growth empirically and develop a stochastic model. Under simplifying assumptions we obtain a time-dependent analytic solution. The distribution evolves from a log-normal into a power law only over long time scales, suggesting that
log-normality comes about because the industry is still young. Numerical solutions under more realistic conditions support this conclusion and give good agreement with the data. Our study shows that, while mutual funds behave in many respects like other rms, there some respects
in which they are quite unusual. Surprisingly, it appears that transaction costs and investor choice play only a minor role in determining fund size. The mutual fund industry manages about a quarter of the assets in the U.S. stock market and thus plays an important role in the U.S. economy.
The Spend-It-All Region and Small Time Results for the Continuous Bomber Problem
A problem of optimally allocating partially effective ammunition x to be used on randomly arriving enemies in order to maximize an aircraft's probability of surviving for time t, known as the Bomber Problem, was first posed by Klinger and Brown (1968). They conjectured a set of apparently obvious monotonicity properties of the optimal allocation function K(x,t). Although some of these conjectures, and versions thereof, have been proved or disproved by other authors since then, the remaining central question, that K(x,t) is nondecreasing in x, remains unsettled. After reviewing the problem and summarizing the state of these conjectures, in the setting where x is continuous we prove the existence of a "spend-it-all" region in which K(x,t) = x and find its boundary, inside of which the long-standing, unproven conjecture of monotonicity of K(.,t) holds. A new approach is then taken of directly estimating K(x,t) for small t, providing a complete small-t asymptotic description of K(x,t) and the optimal probability of survival.A problem of optimally allocating partially effective ammunition x to be used on randomly arriving enemies in order to maximize an aircraft's probability of surviving for time t, known as the Bomber Problem, was first posed by Klinger and Brown (1968).
