Best Invariant and Minimax Estimation of Quantiles in Finite Populations
No full textWe study estimation of finite population quantiles, with emphasis on estimators that are invariant under monotone transformations of the data, and suitable invariant loss functions. We discuss non-randomized and randomized estimators, best invariant and minimax estimators and sampling strategies relative to different classes. The combination of natural invariance of the kind discussed here, and finite population sampling appears to be novel, and leads to interesting statistical and combinatorial aspects.We study estimation of finite population quantiles, with emphasis on estimators that are invariant under monotone transformations of the data, and suitable invariant loss functions. Digital Natives in a Knowledge Economy: will a new kind of Leadership Emerge?
No full textThe aim of this paper is to understand whether digital natives will need a different approach to leadership development. The authors discuss that in knowledge economies extrinsic and explicit knowledge (knowing that) learning approaches are more important than traditional learning methods based on the idea that knowledge has a value per se and it is transferred tacitally (knowing how). In conclusion, authors do acknowledge the importance of extrinsic and explicit knowledge in digital natives learning; but, if they wish to become leaders, digital natives still have not only to turn their explicit knowledge into an implicit one (internalization) in order to intuitively use what they are learning but also natives need to learn more about social skills. Biometric Authentication and Authorization Infrastructures in Trusted Intra-Organizational Relationships
No full textToday, the lives of both people and organizations are strongly focused on the creation, development and maintenance of relationships. These are influenced by several factors, amongst which trust plays an important role. Same as in traditional relationships, trust is considered crucial in their digital equivalent; here we can speak of the concept of trust in technology. An example for trust in technology is given by biometric authentication and authorization infrastructures. A possible approach is the use of typing behavior biometrics as authentication method. This provides a higher security, considering several biometric specific problems like replay attacks or template aging. The intra-organizational environment allows an interesting solution to these problems, namely the synchronization of biometric data within a federation of applications running in the same company. Are Revealed Intentions Possible?
No full textThis paper asks whether it is possible to design an Intentions Revealing Experiment – that is, an
experiment in which the early moves of the decision maker in a dynamic decision problem reveal
the intentions of that decision maker regarding later moves in the decision problem. If such a type
of experiment is possible, then it will enable economists to test whether individuals have plans and
implement them – a basic assumption of all economic theories of dynamic decision making.
Unfortunately the main finding of the paper is in the form of two Impossibility Theorems which
show that, unless one is prepared to make certain assumptions, such an Intentions Revealing
Experiment is impossible. However, the paper does have a positive side – it describes the type of
assumptions that one needs to make in order to make an Intentions Revealing Experiment possible.This paper asks whether it is possible to design an Intentions Revealing Experiment – that is, an
