Essays in macroeconomics of debt deleveraging

    No full text
This dissertation analyzes, in two chapters, how monetary and fiscal authorities can optimally manage debt reduction episodes. In the first chapter I show how public debt deleveraging leads to a recession with different effects on real interest rates according to the fiscal instruments the government is using to reduce the debt. The fiscal authority should not depress much consumption of the agents who hold savings to improve the welfare of the ones who do not have access to financial markets. Moreover speed and timing of public deleveraging depend crucially on the type of instrument the fiscal authority uses to enforce it. Nominal rigidities, in this context, seem to be beneficial for the agents who cannot insure themselves through financial markets. In the second chapter, written together with Prof. Pierpaolo Benigno, we show how deleveraging from high debt can provoke deep recession with significant international side effects. Due the debt reduction process, real and nominal variables can be subject to high uctuations. All these movements are inefficient and interesting trade-offs emerge from the perspective of global welfare. Counterintuitively, we show that the optimal adjustment to global imbalances should not necessarily require large movements in the nominal exchange rate. Moreover we show that, whenever countries have an high degree of openness to trade, Central Banks needs to create a global liquidity trap to face the deleveraging shock. This dissertation analyzes, in two chapters, how monetary and fiscal authorities can optimally manage debt reduction episodes. Islam, national identity and social cohesion: the case of Morocco

    No full text
Why does the secularisation theory, which argues that religion ceases to be significant in societies that have undertaken a process of modernization and democratization, fail to explain why religion remains predominant or even gains salience in some states despite a modernization and industrialization process? This thesis takes Morocco as a case study to provide a theoretical explanation: countries where religion defines national identity and is perceived as a guarantee for social and cultural cohesion, are unlikely to secularize. Why does the secularisation theory, which argues that religion ceases to be significant in societies that have undertaken a process of modernization and democratization, fail to explain why religion remains predominant or even gains salience in some states despite a modernization and industrialization process? From the Single Supervisory Mechanism to the Banking Union. The role of the ECB and the EBA

    No full text
The agreement on the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is an important step to create an integrated banking system in Europe. In this article we look at the powers attributed to the ECB, from a legal perspective, in order to evaluate the SSM in the broader European architecture of banking supervision. We focus on three issues: the coexistence of more authorities with the same functions on a different perimeter of intermediaries in Europe, due to the UK decision to remain outside the SSM; the creation of a supervisory authority with weak regulatory powers (since these remain in the hands of European institutions and national legislators); and ambiguity over the competence to carry out early intervention powers. These issues should be addressed to increase the effectiveness of supervision. To this end, first we need an “umbrella authority” to coordinate supervision among all European countries (those that do and do not adhere to the SSM); this role could be played by the EBA. Second it is crucial to strengthen the powers of the ECB, in the regulatory field as well as for dealing with an impending crisis. The agreement on the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is an important step to create an integrated banking system in Europe. The impact of naturalization on civic integration: an empirical study on TCNs in Italy

    No full text
The main objective of this dissertation is that of exploring the relationship between naturalization and civic integration from an empirical standpoint. Most existing studies have focused on the impact of naturalization on the specifically economic dimension of integration, whereas the non-economic aspects have been much more neglected. Here the question of the impact of naturalization is developed with regards to first-generation, third-country nationals (TCNs) residing in Italy, and focusing the attention on civic integration. The latter is provided a working definition characterized by three dimensions (“vertical”, “horizontal” and “subjective”). The research is based on interviews with fifty individuals carried out between 2012 and 2014. Interviews featured both a structured questionnaire and an open-ended talk. The methodology of analysis of the data was both quantitative and qualitative. The objective of mixing the two methods was to enable me, on the one hand, to define the relationship between the “citizenship variable” and the other main ones, and on the other, to gather a deeper understanding the mechanisms at work behind the process of integration in relation to citizenship acquisition. Overall, this research finds that notwithstanding the pervasive effects on the economic, social and political life that globalization, deterritorialization and increased cross-country mobility have had on nation-states and on individuals living within their borders, national citizenship is still a powerful drive in shaping first-generation immigrants’ chances for civic integration into the host country. The main objective of this dissertation is that of exploring the relationship between naturalization and civic integration from an empirical standpoint.
