    An experiment about “Effects of Arbuscular Mychorhizae Fungi and Adoption of SRI Method on the Growth and Production of Upland Rice on Ultisol†was conducted in glasshouse and soil laboratory of Agriculture Faculty, University of Andalas, Padang. The objective was to obtain the best species and optimum rate of Arbuscular Mycorrhizaze Fungi (AMF) for increasing growth and productivity of upland rice in Ultisol. This was designed in a Factorial Experiment which was allocated in Completely Randomized Design, with two factors and four replications. The first factor was species of AMF (Glomus manihotis, Glomus fasiculatum, and Gigaspora rosea), and the second factor was the application rate of the AMF (0, 5, and 10 g/pot). Variety of upland rice being used was Danau Gaung. The results of the experiment indicated that AMF from species Glomus fasiculatum with 5 g/pot or planting hole showed the best growth and highest production of upland rice in Ultisol.Key words: Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Fungi (AMF), upland rice, Ultiso

    PEMANFAATAN ABU JENJANG KELAPA SAWIT SEBAGAI SUMBER K PADA TANAH GAMBUT DAN PENGARUHNYA TERHADAP PRODUKSI JAGUNG

    This research was conducted in Green House at Agriculture Faculty of Andalas University from September 2000 to Maret 2001.  The objective of the research was to study of  the ash of oil palm stem as K source and to determine optimum level to corn production on peat soils.  The experiment was designed on Complete Randomized Design with 9 treatments and 3 replications.  The treatments consisted of without oil palm ash, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800 kg/ha and 100, 200 kg KCl/ha.  The result showed that application of the ash of oil palm can increase  pH and K  soil content.  The highest pH and K soil content was obtained with 1000 kg ash/ha namely 5,56 and 5,28 me/100 g.     A research entitled the effect of various sources of organic matter on improvement of N,P,K Nutrient of Ultisol was conducted in Limau Manis Padang. The research was aimed to investigate the contribution of different source of organic matter to improve N,P,K content in soil. Field research was arranged in Randomized Block Design (RBD)  consisting 5 treatments and 3 replications (blocks). Treatments are : A = no organic matter added, B = Tithonia, C = Paddy Straw, D = Imperata cylindrica, and E = Leucaena glauca. The dosage for each treatment was 20 ton/ha. The result showed that tithonia gave the best contribution in improving N,P,K content of Ultisol Limau Manis.Keywords :organic matter, N, P, K of Ultisols

    PENDUGAAN EROSI TANAH PADA LAHAN BEKAS TAMBANG BATU BINTANG SUB DAS BATANG KALULUTAN DAN SUNGAI IPUH KABUPATEN PADANG PARIAMAN

    An erosion prediction using Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was conducted from August 2006 to February 2007.  The research was aimed to predict amount of soil erosion and erosion risk rate of ex-obsidian mining of Kalulutan and Ipuh River, Padang Pariaman District.  The result showed that the highest soil erosion was predicted under ex-obsidian mining (45% slope) namely 2.593 t/ha/y and the lowest was found under mixed farm (3-8% slope), 4,95 t/ha/y. Erosion risk rate of ex-obsidian mining was very heavy whilst for mixed farm varied from light to very heavy.   Keyword: erosion prediction, ex-obsidian mining, Sub-catchments are

    This experiment is about the evaluation of characteristic alteration of soil nutrients after ten years at tropical rain forest Bukit Gajabuih Gunung Gadut Padang. This experiment was conducted from November 2006 - April 2007.  This experiment is arranged based on anova design with three treatments which was based on three great groups of land ( oxic-dystroudept (eutriccc, aquic), oxic-dystroudept (xanthic), oxic-typic-dystroudept (xanthic)).  The purpose of this experiment was to study the alteration of soil fertility characteristics  (K, Ca, Mg, Na, P and C/N) in ten years period (1995-2005) in tropical rain forest at Bukit Gajabuih Padang, to observe vegetation variety alteration, and the relationship with the land fertility characteristics.  From the experiment was found that nutrient status of the soils altered after ten years (*1995-2005).  Available P content increased about 77%, exchangeable Na and K  increased 86,04% and 53.65%, respectively.  On the other hand, exchangeable Mg and Ca decreased 3,05% and 65,88%, respectively.  Land C/N ratio decreased about 21,39%.     A field research about the effect of some sources of organic matter on aggregate stability of Ultisol was conducted in Limau Manis Padang. The research was aimed to investigate the contribution of different sources of organic matter to soil aggregate stability.  Field research was arranged in Completely Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of 4 treatments (types of organic matter) and 3 replications (blocks). The treatments were : A =  Tithonia diversifolia, B = Straw of Oryza sativa, C = Imperata cylindrica, and D = Leucaena glauca. The dosage for each treatment was 20 ton/ha based on dry weight. The result showed that Tithonia diversifolia gave the best contribution in improving soil aggregate stability of Ultisol Limau Manis for the first three (3) months.Keywords : organic matter, aggregate stability, marginal soil

    Banana is one of fruit commodity having been widely cultivated by people and has high potency for agribusiness.  However, there are some constraints for the cultivation, such as soil fertility and disease attack.  Nowadays, tne main disease causing low banana production in West Sumatra is wilt due to Fusarium.  One way being developed to improve banana production in endemic land is by using bioagent.  This research was aimed to identify spores of mycorrizhae in several endemic land.  The result showed that there were various types of MVA found in tested locations (Agam, Solok, and Padang Pariaman regencies).  Glomus was one genus that was always found in each location.  Therefore, the glomus sp was quite potential to explore and and proliferation as a good innoculant to improve growth of banana plant.  The highest amount of MVA sport found in Padang Pariaman regency (especially in Pasar Usang area) was 195/20 g soil (Glomus), then followed by Acaulospora (121 spora/20 g soil) and Gigaspora (65 spora/20 g soil).Key Words: Banana, Fusarium, Wilt, Bioagent, MV

    EVALUASI KESESUAIAN LAHAN DAN POTENSI PRODUKSI TANAMAN MANGGIS (Garcinia mangostana L.) DI KAB.50 KOTA

    This research discusses the land suitability of mangosteen field in Kab.50 Kota Kota Payakumbuh, predict production potential of mangosteen based on the climate suitability, soil and management its field.  Composite soil sample is taken through drilling 0 – 60 cm which is carried out on research site.  Quantitative model from FAO (1976) is used to evaluate the land suitability.  This model combines enviromental data, climate and soil condition (soil physic and chemistry characteristic), so that production potential of field based on climate (Climate Production Potential = CPP) can be maesured quantitatively.  By entering the real data of plant production, this model can predict the real plant production in a field (Land Production Potential = LPP).  Result of this research shows that climate and physical condition of land are very suitability to grow mangosteen, and its level appropriateness is S1 (very suitability).  Then, production potential 3 – 12 ton/ha/year can be increased to > 15 ton/ha/year if the management of land is improved.Key Words :  Land suitability evaluation, Climatic Production Potential, Land  Production Potentia

    A study of P – nutrient status (P – soil) in the maize production central in Kinali, Luhak Nan Duo in Pasaman, Sub Regency Pasaman Barat to find of the recommendation of phosphorous (P) fertilization. A study is conducted from October to December 2005. Method of research by crossed land area and took soil sampling with composite. Each soil sampling represented of land area research 50 – 80 ha with 0 – 20 cm dept for land area 7702,2 ha and 97 soil sample and then analyzed by Bray II methods. From 7702,2 ha of land area were survey founded P high content 5351,5 ha (69,4 %), P – with middle content 1487,5 ha (19,3 %) and P – lower content 863,2 ha (11,2 %). Based on soil P – status, P nutrient requirement to 90,250 and 500 kg SP 36 respectively and yield prospecting 4,5 ton/ha with 14 % water content equal to 8 ton dry grain seed at harvesting with water content 25%.Key Words: P-fertilizer, Fertilization Recommendation, Soil P-statu

    KAJIAN SIFAT FISIKA TANAH PADA PERTUMBUHAN TANAMAN MANGGIS (Garcinia mangostana L.) DI KABUPATEN LIMA PULUH KOTA

    This research was aimed to evaluate physical properties of soils grown by mangosteen crops in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, especially in Kecamatan Payakumbuh and Kecamatan Guguk, in West Sumatra.   Soils were sampled by using sample rings for undisturbed and by using soil driller for disturbed samples on 0-20, 20-40, and 40-60 cm soil depth.  Soil samples were analyzed in Soil Laboratory Agriculture Faculty, Andalas University, Padang.  The results showed that soil texture in two locations was similar, that was silty loam for the 0-40 cm depth, and clay for the 40-60 depth.  However, generally soil organic matter content in Guguk was lower than that in Payakumbuh, that was medium to low, BV from low to high, total porosity from high to medium, and permeability from high to slightly slow.  Key  Words: Soil physical properties, mangostan
