Gender-Neutral Language in Non-Professional Translation: A Case Study from American Young Adult Literature

    No full text
Literary representations of nonbinary identities for young readers have become a key topic in cultural debates across Western countries. While far-right movements have sought to reinforce gender normativity, some sectors of the publishing industry now promote young adult (YA) books with non-binary protagonists. In Italy, translating such works from English has proven particularly complex, as Italian is a grammatical gender language. This study recognizes the translation of YA queer literature as a crucial means of fostering diversity in education. The paper presents the results of a workshop in which Italian undergraduate translation students translated excerpts from All Boys Aren’t Blue, George M. Johnson’s 2020 queer memoir-manifesto. After outlining the debate on gender-fair language (GFL) and key developments in queer translation studies, the paper discusses the students’ approaches to the translation of GFL, showing that linguistic challenges can be addressed through a combination of traditional and innovative translation strategies

Creating a 3D village model with multi-source data model integration: application for the protection of ethnic architectural heritage

    No full text
Ethnic architectural heritage is mainly concentrated in ancient villages. The 3D models of ancient villages are of great significance in the protection of the ethnic architectural heritage in ancient villages. The aim of this study is to integrate multi-source data models to form a 3D model of ancient villages, which can provide detailed records of the ethnic architectural heritage and the surrounding environment and ensure that the memory space of the model is as small as possible. This will provide data support for the construction planning and physical protection of ethnic architectural heritage in ancient villages. Taking Hexi Village in He-jie Town of Guang-xi as a case study, different types of architectural models of ancient villages were modeled using technologies such as oblique photogrammetry, point cloud data, and BIM modeling. Through the fusion of multiple data models, a 3D model of the ancient village was successfully constructed, providing an important digital foundation for the protection and restoration of ethnic architectural heritage, opening up new ideas for the digital protection of traditional villages, and laying the foundation for subsequent research on digital twins of ethnic architectural heritage in ancient villages.&nbsp

    La valutazione nell'homeschooling: Temi emergenti

    No full text
The spread of homeschooling practices in many countries responds to the need of many families to find an alternative to traditional school offerings that respect the well-being, potential and learning times of the child. Assessment, a fundamental element of educational planning in conventional schools, is not considered equally in homeschooling settings, despite its formative value and the possibility that it can act as an element capable of restoring centrality to the child. With references to international literature, the contribution reports an exploratory research conducted in the Italian context that sought to delve into the topic of the methods of examining homeschooling students and the perceptions of school personnel involved in their assessment process. The triangulation of data from different studies on the same topic and from various perspectives (families, teachers and headteachers) helped grasp the phenomenon’s complexity and the possibility of defining a school that works for all its students.

Between 2018 and 2022, Brazil experienced deep political and social polarization, rooted in a dualistic logic dividing “friends” and “enemies.” Emerging in 2014, this reached its peak under Bolsonaro, whose rhetoric revived authoritarian ideals of a homogeneous nation. In one speech, he claimed laws serve the majority, while minorities must “adapt or simply disappear.” Echoing the military dictatorship, this discourse legitimises the exclusion of the “other,” even in physical terms.

    No full text
This paper details the strategy for the development of training initiatives in the framework of the PNRR project developed by the CNR Humanities and cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud (H2IOSC) and aims to open up the process of applying the guidelines for the design and use of teaching modules integrating the use of Research Infrastructures to the Italian reference community. In particular, the contribution focuses on the shared standards for the description of teaching materials as FAIR digital objects to maximise their reuse in a train-the-trainer perspective and on the description of the requirements for the implementation of the training infrastructure. After describing the teaching strategy (Section 2) and the application of the Skills4EOSC FAIR-by-Design methodology to pre-existing learning materials (Section 3), the paper describes the process of designing two platforms with functionalities consistent with the requirements of learning objects, taking as an example the CLARIN course Introduction to Language Data: Standards and Repositories translated and adapted in H2IOSC (Section 4).Il presente lavoro dettaglia la strategia per lo sviluppo di iniziative di formazione nell’ambito del progetto PNRR sviluppato dal CNR Humanities and cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud (H2IOSC) e mira ad aprire alla comunità italiana di riferimento il processo di applicazione delle linee guida di design e di fruizione di moduli didattici che integrino l’uso delle Infrastrutture di Ricerca.

Long-term effects of agropharmaceutic (pesticide category) use on soil microbial communities and water resources

    No full text
Pesticide application in agriculture has significantly increased to enhance crop productivity. However, its long-term use raises concerns regarding soil microbial communities and water resource contamination. This study examines the prolonged impacts of agropharmaceutic (pesticide category) residues on microbial diversity, soil health, and groundwater pollution. The findings reveal that persistent agropharmaceutic exposure alters microbial community structure, reducing beneficial microorganisms while promoting resistant strains. Additionally, agropharmaceutic leaching into water systems contributes to ecological disturbances and human health risks. This research underscores the urgent need for sustainable pest management practices to mitigate environmental damage while maintaining agricultural efficiency

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in wild edible mushrooms of an Indo Burma biodiversity hotspot: Suitability assessment for safe consumption and food safety/security implications

    No full text
Fungi can bio-accumulate heavy metals (HMs) from the contaminated soil which makes them a valuable tool and potential bio-agent for environmental remediation and agro-ecosystem restoration. However, it is essential to analyse the potential risks associated with the consumption of the HMs contaminated wild edible mushrooms to maintain the food safety/-security. To this end, HMs content was assessed in three wild edible mushrooms species collected from different regions of Aizawl Mizoram, North East India, which is underlying in an Indo Burma biodiversity hotspot. The analysis of HMs was carried out using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) to determine the contents of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in mushrooms’ biomass on dry weight basis. The overall heavy metal content in the studied mushrooms was also found to follow the order: Cd (0.003–0.018 mg/kg) < Pb (0.034–0.182 mg/kg) < Ni (0.033–0.058 mg/kg) < Mn (3.3445–6.109 mg/kg) < Cu (7.085–12.285 mg/kg) < Zn (19.089–31.878 mg/kg) < Fe (30.589–49.203 mg/kg). Results revealed that all the HMs in these mushrooms were within safe limits for human consumption, thereby imposing negligible human health risks. However, long-term consumption of mushrooms with elevated Ni levels should be approached with caution. Nevertheless, sustained long-term HMs monitoring and estimation of human health risk assessment indices are warranted in biodiversity hotspots to mitigate the human health risks.  Last, the extrapolation of present study is necessary in urbanized and industrial landscapes with intense HMs contamination.
