Power, Performance, and the Embodied Ideal: Exploring Gender Dynamics in the Theatre Industry
No full textThe intricate interplay between power dynamics, gendered ideals, and bodily practices is often witnessed within different industries including theatre. Through qualitative interviews and observations of plays and rehearsals, the research paper investigates the power structure that exists within the industry along with the embodiment of gendered expectations focusing on the construction and perception of the body as a “work in progress”. It underscores the complexity of power dynamics, hierarchy, and gender within the industry, highlighting persistent challenges such as gender disparities and male-dominated networks. It argues that power in theatre is dispersed across various entities and operates through networks of relationships and practices. Despite progress towards gender parity, systemic barriers hinder women’s advancement in leadership roles and very often impact body representation on stage. The paper advocates for fostering equitable and inclusive theatre environments by addressing underlying power dynamics, promoting diversity in leadership, and challenging traditional norms
Collaborative Spaces: Nodes Within an Accelerated World
No full textThis study investigates the locational patterns and socioeconomic implications of collaborative spaces (CSs) within the Veneto region of Italy from an accelerationist perspective. Through a comprehensive analysis of the CSs distribution, infrastructural correlations, and socioeconomic contexts, this study explores the evolving role of CSs in contemporary urban landscapes. The findings reveal a nuanced picture of CSs localisation, indicating a dispersal pattern across medium- and small-sized cities, rather than concentrating solely on major urban centres. Proximity to productive and reproductive infrastructures has emerged as a consistent theme, underscoring the economic orientation of CSs within local economic systems. Furthermore, this study delves into the ambivalence of CSs, illustrating their dual role as catalysts of knowledge-based capitalism and sites of socioeconomic tensions. Despite their initial intention to foster professional communities, CSs often become enmeshed in the broader processes of economic exploitation and hegemony. By framing CSs within the context of local innovation systems, this study highlights their potential for intensifying knowledge circulation and collaboration among local actors. This study opens avenues for future research into the evolving role of CSs within innovation systems and their broader socioeconomic implications
Democratic Dissonance: Observing and Accounting by Volunteer Election Officials in Hungary
No full textWe reflect on the ability of democratic institutions to provide accountability, and on the relevance of that accountability. We discuss the democratic observation technology of the election official role in the 2022 Hungarian elections, where a social movement of volunteers served to fill these posts on behalf of the beleaguered opposition. A public scandal ensued after the social media sharing of volunteers' accounts. We reflect on the relationship between first-order and second-order observation, and we show the ethnographic aspect of these accounts and the shifting accountability relations in this dynamic. We conclude with provocations about the problem of managing dissonance through existing democratic institutions
Bonds without Bondage: Escaping Entrapment in Managerial Networks
No full textThis paper explores the emergence of constraints in managerial networks and the strategies by which individuals regain autonomy. Drawing on Harrison C. White’s theories, we construct and analyze a series of examples that are composite narratives informed by the second author’s work at a global investment bank. Our examples show how professional relationships, initially pursued for career advantage, can crystallize into rigid, constraining roles. We also illustrate three strategies that restore autonomy: annealing, a strategy of controlled disruption; network reaching, which establishes counter-normative ties across social boundaries; and prolepsis, a form of anticipatory rhetoric that affects action through vivid, seemingly inevitable pictures of the future. We thus portray autonomy as recoverable through strategies that reshape network ties and conversational frames. We also explore how status shapes the feasibility of these strategies, with low status requiring network reaching and trust-building dialogue, and high status supporting prolepsis. Our discussion adds to the literature on networks and leadership, emphasizing how roles, strategy, and status interact to constrain and enable managerial agency

No full textThis paper aims to offer reflections on the many variables involved in writing production and the complex operations underlying the processual nature of composing in primary school. In particular, it describes some strategic supports provided to pupils in the early years of primary education, drawn from the MLTV (Making Learning and Thinking Visible) and WRW (Writing and Reading Workshop) approaches. When applied to the prewriting phase, these strategies enabled young apprentice writers to manage the generation and planning of ideas, helping them to overcome the fear of the blank page.Questo contributo vuole fornire spunti di riflessione sulle molteplici variabili che intervengono nella produzione scritta e sulle complesse operazioni sottese alla processualità del comporre nella scuola primaria. No full textPoetry, as an «intellectual activity that enjoys its own particular forms», can resort to a collective imagination to depict a specific situation or an objective problem. The reductio ad artem that Giulio Cesare Croce chooses to follow in the comedy of the Banchetto de’ mal cibati (1591) follows the stylistic canons of a poetry-pharmakon that, in preserving the peculiarities of the «theatrical» material of the «Buccolica» theorized by Tomaso Garzoni, welcomes into the connective tissue of a «annoying» diegetic «subject» (the one linked to the «serious infirmities» that occurred in the years 1590 and 1591) two examples of «consolatory cornucopias»: the «anti-cuisine» of the cook Magrino; and the bizarre parody of the Pastor Fido by Battista Guarini, included by Croce in act III, scene 1 of the comedy.La poesia, in quanto «attività intellettuale che fruisce di sue particolari forme», può ricorrere a un immaginario collettivo per raffigurare una determinata situazione o un problema oggettivo. La reductio ad artem che Giulio Cesare Croce sceglie di percorrere nella commedia del Banchetto de’ mal cibati (1591) segue i canoni stilistici di una poesia-pharmakon, che, nel conservare le peculiarità della materia «teatrica» propria della «Buccolica» teorizzata da Tomaso Garzoni, accoglie nel tessuto connettivo di un «soggetto» diegetico «fastidioso» (quello legato alle «gravi infirmità» sopraggiunte negli anni 1590 e 1591) due esempi di «cornucopie consolatorie»: l’«anti-cucina» del cuoco Magrino; e la bizzarra parodia del Pastor Fido di Battista Guarini, inclusa da Croce nell’atto III, scena 1 della commedia
A law of meaning
No full textThis article rejects the canonical ideal of a one-to-one correspondence between meaning and marker and proposes a set-theoretical and optimality-based law for the relationship between meaning and its markers which allows for distinguishing true markers (such as not, no, never for negation) from otherwise associated items (such as negative polarity items as but, any):
a meaning is expressed by the set of non-randomly recurrent markers that together are the best collocation of that meaning.
We implement the law in an algorithm using Dunning’s log-likelihood and illustrate it by extracting markers for ‘know’, negation, first person subject and complementizers from translations of the New Testament in a variety sample of 83 languages with manual evaluation of all extracted markers. Markers are extracted from unannotated texts (with lexemes being just a special case of marker-set coalition phenomena) considering just one meaning at a time (without any need for accounting for specific coexpression types)
